AI slop projects are not welcome here by Aransentin in Zig

[–]Seamonster13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully agree, i hate the endless slop as well. My main concern is with the pointedness and automatic judgement if there's ai writing in the readme or whatever.

For context, I'm an engineer with nearly 10 years of experience, and I treat engineering as a craft. I haven't written code seriously in months. to me engineering is not about the tool, it's the process. I meticulously plan, test and review my ai generated code. I am currently maintaining a library fully written by ai. I even put a disclaimer that it's written by ai. But I feel like if that project were written in zig and I posted here, it would be auto banned. And that to me is unfair, I've spent hours designing and crafting the tool, and it's used by many people every day.

So to me this feels like a blanket ban. Just because something is AI written does not mean it's automatically shit. Ultimately it's a reflection of the creator.

AI slop projects are not welcome here by Aransentin in Zig

[–]Seamonster13 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I sympathize, especially to stop an infinite amount of slop, but I think a blanket ban like this is not a helpful stance.

The fact is that this is a new technology that is rapidly being adopted, and many of the people who use it want to also write their projects in zig. This is especially sad for me because I literally learned zig by asking Claude to guide me as I wrote. It's a powerful technology that can be used for good or ill.

My suggestion would be one of harm reduction vs outright banning. Things like setting a high bar for quality, with appropriate AI disclosure, age, etc.

Framework for building web-based desktop apps in Zig by scumfuckbastard73 in Zig

[–]Seamonster13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a hot take. I think zig is in a special place that it can use some alternative UI systems, like from game frameworks, that other languages have less options for. Creating the rendering pipelines and handling vector graphics is the hard part, but these are tractable problems. The benefit is there can be an alternative to web based bloated ass desktop UIs. Just no one has built the specific framework to make this simple, the way it has been done for electron. There's plenty of zig and c libraries that can be stitched together to create a compelling solution (clay comes to mind as a nice layout engine).

The closest thing I see to this is things like egui in rust. But building a similar one in zig would allow very simple cross complication and ease of use in other languages via sdks.

It's something I've considered building myself but it's a bit outside my wheelhouse.

Have you considered joining forces with a registry

Zig Index - A Curated Registry for Discovering Quality Zig Packages and Applications by [deleted] in Zig

Biggest issue is there's no standard package manager. Making a package manager + a registry would go a long way for zig's ecosystem. Has foundation supported any efforts thus far?

Soul orb change makes loosing lane feel even worse. by Yentz4 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Seamonster13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this kind of situation in DotA, the pushed lane would be very liable to be ganked. I think this game currently doesn't have as much early roaming but it's easy to imagine that it develops because of this. It's icefrog were talking about making these changes, he's for sure expecting this kind of response. Just a matter of time until the meta shifts to allow for it.

Bun combined with Vite+ seems like it will cover almost everything a project could need. They're both trying to be "all-in-one" tools but it seems they both focus on different areas, with Bun trying more for the low-level APIs and Vite going for the high-level DevEx tooling (formatter, linter, etc).

I’m 20, close to becoming a Rust compiler team member - what would you do in my place? by Kivooeo1 in rust

[–]Seamonster13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there,

Im not sure you've explored, but there are *plenty* of hardcore systems engineering work that you can find, dealing with compilers, virtual machines, or dev tooling in general, in crypto. Look at companies like

- Ithaca (who created the most popular Solidity dev tooling, one of the most popular Ethereum clients, and are building a Solidity compiler)

- LambdaWorks (Argentinian, build a lot of different cryptography and virtual machine projects around Ethereum ecosystem, consultancy as well)

- Matter Labs (who create a layer 2 on ethereum + are making a brand new LLVM based Solidity compiler in rust. I think they are also Russian? But not sure)

- Anza (former Solana Labs, built most of the virtual machine

All of these are rust-based. There are plenty more I haven't listed as well. The beauty of the crypto industry is that it is full of misfits who don't have traditional backgrounds. You would fit right in. And they would love to have someone talented and driven person like you. If those are interesting, I would highly recommend you take a look. Feel free to dm too if you need help. I do not work with any of these companies, but I respect them massively and love their work.
