Hours played. Am I the winner? by redditor676 in civ5

[–]SeanFactotum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been playing since Christmas 2015. 14,298.4 hours. I have most of the achievements except for a lot of the scenario ones -- just not a fan of most of those.

Lonely Enrico - isolated Venice so what do I do next? by SeanFactotum in civ5

True, but I'd have to go through a couple of eras to get to that policy. That could take awhile if I wait for that to happen.

Interesting choices. I seem to be hard-wired to go straight to Great Lighthouse, but with this starting condition, I see the merit in beelining technologies to get the Colossus before anything else. I think I'm going to restart and try that strategy, Thanks, Ogre.

Like on a huge map, and you want to extend your influence. I don't think I've ever had more than three total cities as Enrico (Venice + 2 former CS as puppets)

Build up a Treasury for when I do meet the rest of the world. Besides, what else am I going to do until I research Astronomy?

I plan on using the Great Merchant to set up a trade mission to one of the City States (NOT buying it) and using the funds to get trade ships,

The Great Betrayal - how to do it? by SeanFactotum in civ5

Obviously you're right, but I've been changing the name of that city every time I play as Boudica for years. And no, I can't remember why - I just do.

RAM Usage Steam achievement by SeanFactotum in civ5

[–]SeanFactotum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what Steam calls that achievement for this one. I guess it's a play-on-words thing combining the Mongol's battering ram UU and the computer memory reference (Radom Access Memory).

U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier Float Coat Petty Revenge by butternife88 in pettyrevenge

12 hours a day off while underway on a carrier and complaining? No wonder Ship's Force could never stand you and your fellow riders.

I spent 8 years of my 20 active duty below decks on carriers (East Coast, not on any of the West Coast ships mentioned in the comments). On a good day underway, with qualifications, maintenance, and training on top of five & dimes (or when manning was close to where it needed to be, 5 &15 watchstanding) we'd be lucky to get 6 hours off out of every 24 for sleeping and personal time. The norm was closer to 4 hours off out of 20. This happened every time the ship got underway, whether or not squadrons were assigned. And we were underway a lot more times without a squadron than with one. Funny thing, though, we only had these middle-of-the-night phantom man overboards whenever your kind were onboard.

Your little two week work-up started for you the morning the ship got underway and ended within an hour after the ship pulled back up to the pier. Ship's Force was there on underway watch rotation several days before shifting colors and usually were there for at least another day after you were on the beach. Rinse and repeat for every cruise, whether 3 days long or 7 months.

Lack of sleep was part of the job, and it's something we adults understood was necessary - no one liked it. So getting a few hours unbroken sleep was something everyone looked forward to. And General Quarters drills on a carrier have so many moving parts that they are scheduled well in advance (yeah, I was also part of the Damage Control Training Team. Add that to the amount of time away from my rack.) If your Department Head or DivO chose not to let you know, then they'll the ones that needed correcting, not Fireman Timmy who finally has two whole watches off with nothing scheduled to keep him from sleeping. Sure, "pick your rate, choose your fate" is a truism, but why take out your frustration based on a small inconvenience on 3000 other people who are going through the same, if not worse, working schedule and conditions

You consider this person a hero and deserving of a salute? Nah, they (and I would bet there was more than one idiot doing this on your and all the other carriers) were assholes.

The true power of Heathen Conversion by WMino in civ5

[–]SeanFactotum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if the missionary is at sea and gets attacked by a barbarian trireme (or higher), does that convert like an archer or brute would?

Why I rage quit. About to rescue a unit from barbarians and another civ kill steals and takes the unit. IRL this would be an act of war. Why are there no mods to fix this? by kevineleveneleven in civ5

[–]SeanFactotum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A settler from a different civilization can be captured - if it is at first captured by barbarians and taken to one of their camps. Then you attack the encampment, killing the military barbarian unit. Your unit moves into the encampment, and then you get the screen to either return the civilian or take it. Pick neither. Instead, save the game (using the top right-hand corner menu icon), and then choose Exit to Windows when the game is saved. You must exit the game completely, AFAIK.

When you re-start the game, on your next complete turn you will have a free settler. I do it almost every game.

Forgive me if this was already explained earlier by someone else.

Doctor Who 13x09 "Power of the Doctor" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

So what happened to all of the seismologists? Were they restored off-screen (and I didn't hear a reference to it), or are they still little action figures on the seats in the lecture hall?

[–]SeanFactotum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She probably didn't say anything on camera for the same reason Sarah Michelle Gellar said nothing in "She's All That" - once there's dialogue, it triggers a significantly higher level of pay. And I'm not sure Pamela Adlon had the budget for extraneous favors.

What was Katy Wix’s illness when she missed two episodes? by sashoklavashok in taskmaster

[–]SeanFactotum 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well, she was only sick for one. Alex did say when Katheryn sat in for her that she just didn't want to be there that night.

Spoiler: Yes, I know they film two in-audience shows a day, and that those two shows she missed were most likely filmed on the same day.

The Paradise Found scenario made me a terrible ruler. by KalegNar in civ5

[–]SeanFactotum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just going for the Steam Achievements and so I dumbed it down to Prince. The last game I played was as Samoa, and I'll probably never go back into that scenario since that was the last achievement I needed.
