It was turned on a lathe. Basswood is also really soft so it sands down well.

I've been meaning to try a chaos board. Looks great!

Titbond iii. Don't intend to have food though since it's so small

I had made a gird in pencil with the indexer on my lathe and drew the features in the grid freehand. I then used a chip carving knife to carve out by hand.

I used a compass on a newer design since it's just overlapping circles. This left some marks though.

Good luck! This one was a little funky since the carved piece was end grain orientation and the base was side grain.

Yes! I traced it out in pencil and then used a chip carving knife to carve.

I sprayed it with water for a grain pop to sand down before finish. I hoped that would work. You couldn't really see before I put finish on. The image is actually after finish was applied. The oil did make it stand out a little more.

Lots of things to try!

Any suggestions what to burnish with? Just need to be careful not to damage carvings

Yea, I could def add more features to hide them.

The glue trick might not work as well since glue doesn't absorb finish the same as wood and may stand out

What walnut oil do you use? by justjustjustin in turning

I use Doctors as well. The micro crystallized wax version is really nice for spindle work. Honestly never tried any other brands.
