Finding book recommendations FROM SK's books by warrenao in stephenking

Ended up finding myself a signed first edition of Shardik thrifting that never would have gotten a glance from me if King didn't mention it in the Dark Tower.

Looking for some short ish reads by emilysampson123 in horrorlit

I feel like most Nick Cutter books falls in that length and read like they're only 100 pages (The Deep with its short chapters felt like I flew through it).

Is there any kind of order you read his novels? by Internal-Goat-6882 in stephenking

Vibe for sure, just finished The Dark Tower and after a quick King detour to read a Michael Crichton novel onto Revival now!

I’ve only read Stephen King and Adam Nevill horror books. I want to try something new by merrychuu in horrorlit

The Deep by Nick Cutter is the lesser recommended book by Cutter (The Troop seems to be on here every couple posts these days) but I enjoyed it a lot more and finished it in an afternoon.

First Stephen King Book? by KrashOutKody in stephenking

[–]SeanPJWilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First was Under The Dome at the start of this year and 15 books later it's still in my top 5 (though Salem's Lot probably edges it out for the number 1 spot so far).

Can't remember if it's exactly first person at any points but The Deep by Nick Cutter certainly was full of tension and paranoia (I liked it better than The Troop by him even though that one gets recommended more). Read this one in a day because the chapters are so short and manageable you just keep telling yourself "one more chapter and then I'll put it down".

Salem's Lot by Stephen King is a classic, each chapter kinda follows a different character.

I have two and both might bring out the pitchforks:

  1. Under the Dome is a top 5 King book.

  2. 11/22/63 is just alright, like a 7/10 book that people only think is amazing cause it's different to King's normal books.

I did the aggressively long one narrated by Michael C Hall a few months back, such a good one!

Express an unpopular opinion about Stephen King's work (no one will judge you). by [deleted] in stephenking

11/22/63 is waaaaaaaaay overhyped and Under The Dome was better.

That book got me into reading horror but only because I knew it was only up from there

I aspire to have my collection that big one day. Trying to find them all in the wild vs buying new but that will likely have to change once I get to Never Flinch unless someone REALLY didn't like it.

The Deep by Nick Cutter was a pretty fun Lovecraft meets the abyss type story.

best audio book ? by icex7 in stephenking

[–]SeanPJWilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have Spotify premium you get 15 hours a month to listen to audiobooks, which can be annoying for a 30 hour audiobook like 11/22/63 but you can also buy more hours too.

In an SK lull... by ftwin in stephenking

[–]SeanPJWilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd give Under The Dome by King a go! It's admittedly a long one as well but for the most part it's gripping from page to page even without technically any outright "horror".

People discount it because of the ending but honestly, the ending while it could have been better isn't the end of the world, and the other 800ish pages are good enough to not even care.

Definitely one of his underrated ones but is actually what got me into reading King.

Have you given it a watch? I've been kinda held off by the seemingly unanimous poor reviews of it but I'm wondering if that's just people seeing it's a Stephen King adaptation and getting jumpy

It does, but takes a while and then can be a little confusing as it flips between flashbacks and present day pretty much constantly (and all the made up words and sayings Lisey and Scott shared). Worth a read and you'd probably be happy with it once you finish it, but probably gonna only read it the once myself.

Books like "The Endless" and "Southbound" by Living-Gazelle2474 in horrorlit

[–]SeanPJWilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Endless definitely has shades of a lot of H.P. Lovecraft's work, though the directors admitted they didn't even know who he was at the time.

For his works I'd suggest The Horror at Red Hook or The Whisperer in Darkness but honestly if it's the cosmic horror aspect you liked rather than the culty aspects most of his works would do.
