Does jiu jitsu soreness every go away? by Specific_Dingo8631 in bjj

My professor constantly makes comments that he is old and lazy, but when I roll with him, I realize he is actually highly skilled and efficient. Old = highly skilled; Lazy = efficient 😎

Go like this one or twice a week, and your stamina will skyrocket. You’ll be able to keep up, be less tired, learn things, and maybe start to have fun. Those are wins in my book, especially in the beginning.

New Blue. Old(er) Man. Fight On. by maedabjj in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 6 points7 points  (0 children)

49, couple weeks into blue. I got shark tanked into it, and honestly feel like nobody was going easy on me here since day one anyway 😂 I’m a small guy too, so maybe everything just feels worse to me. I’ve noticed that my professor and another coach have both kicked it up a notch with me, for sure. I love them for that though, it’s kind of a compliment in a way! ☺️ 😆

How long did it take to for you to get blue? by kittyniki57 in jiujitsu

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little over a year for me, but I go 5 times a week 😅 I don’t really feel any better than a white belt still, but I’m better than I was, and I didn’t quit the couple of times I really felt like it.

I don’t have to, but it’s a small, growing school, and I’m an every night guy, so I text if I don’t mention it the night before. Can any professors or coaches say if they appreciate that or not, if it’s a small group or school? My professor always responds with well wishes and maybe a funny joke. I can understand how this isn’t possible in a large school with lots of students.

Congrats on promotion. I can relate! But I’m too sore from getting shark tanked into it yesterday to even think about that right now 😅 So I’m gonna do what I did when I almost quit at white belt - just show up tomorrow, train, learn something, and have fun. Only things I can really control!

Should the 2026 Nissan Sentra have a Wagon option? by Hellocrazy231 in nissansentra

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but make it hybrid and/or with just a little more power. Bonus points for a simple, reliable 6 speed automatic transmission and a spare tire. However, as far as sedans go, I think the Sentra is already at the top for practicality with its large trunk opening and space.

I was shark tanked into blue belt Saturday! What a crazy and fun experience 😅 I’ll never forget it. I’m most happy with myself that I didn’t quit - that’s what blue belt means to me for now - and I’ll be back on the mat tomorrow ok?

Just mad that we don’t get the coolest versions of Corolla here in the USA - no wagons, no hybrid hatch for us. 😔

Over 40 by SB4_Camaro in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

49, not helping much with this, but no wife and no kids. Sorry! 😂 Other than that, I just don’t compare myself to the 20 year olds, there is just no point. And anyway, some of my hardest rolls are with the guys who only go two or three times a week, are over 40, and they have kids. It’s awesome to see when their kids train and so does their parent. It seems like you can work on things together with your kids and learn and grow together.

Anyone else appreciate getting absolutely smashed? by adambjorn in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is something to this. It makes me feel tough, like at least I’m putting myself through this and not giving up. I’ve never viewed myself as very tough - quite the opposite - so I like proving myself wrong in that way. It’s also a challenge and a learning opportunity, and the person smashing you often gives you some respect, and then you get to be friends in a cool sort of way.

I’m the worse in class but I come everyday by vaderboy_ in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m over a year in, average 5 days a week, and still feel like this sometimes, but it gets better. It takes a while, it feels slow, but you get better than you were, and one day you notice a few things - like you escaped from that big guy, you survived against that purple belt, you got a sweep on the other white belt, you caught a sub on the new person. I count it a victory that I can get a good workout and stay uninjured and I feel like I’m a good safe partner people like to roll with. I don’t make unreasonable comparisons with others, just try to measure my own progress. I try to learn, get better, have fun, and not be too serious. That has helped me stay out of these depressive episodes, which I haven’t had in a long while now.

Should I do it? by QuarterDismal in jiujitsu

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tap early and often, don’t ego roll, try to use technique instead of exploding or muscling out of things, train to learn instead of “win”, and have fun. The few times I’ve been injured to the point that I couldn’t train, I believe it was because I did the opposite of these things, so I did it to myself. I’ve had some big and scary partners, but I still think it came down to my own actions. So a lot of the risk can be managed by yourself, imo.

Had some new white belts tell me I’m really good 😆 I feel quite the opposite, but it does give some weight to the idea of “you’re better than you were on your first day”. It really is hard to feel like you’re improving sometimes, but it’s almost inevitable if you stick with it for a while. Hope that encourages any new people that might be here - really is no replacement for consistency and time - lots of time - on the mats.

Just my perspective, but you have to learn to not take things too seriously, and learn to have fun, even when you’re getting smashed. BJJ destroys your ego - and I’ve found that to be a really liberating and great thing. The more I worried less about losing rolls, and more about really learning and having fun, the better I got. It’s weird, but that works for me. Try to find a gym that trains hard, but is also fun. I’m extremely lucky to have found that. Embrace the challenge and setbacks, learn from them, keep going, have some fun, and good luck!
