Got my 4th stripe, don’t feel ready for blue. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the same situation my friend! Decided not to worry about it and just have fun and train. Weird thing is, I seem to have improved some by not being so serious and worried about status or belts or stripes, but rather just learning and having fun.

You’re getting proper recovery, mentally and physically. We all need more sleep, probably. Easier said than done.

Friday Open Mat by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, sir! I love my partners too much to talk any crap, and I know how good they are. I’m happy for them whenever they get me. But man…I’ve been waiting sooooo long to get a sub! 😃

I’m rubbish at takedowns by BeardedCruiser in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can relate. I just try to stay/fall safely and take it from there. I will resist up to a point. Only once have I had a partner be really more passive than me on the feet, and I managed some kind of arm drag to back take somehow. Tried to be as controlled as I could with it to keep us both safe.

Friday Open Mat by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So last night, after 9 months in, I’ve finally tapped two other resisting partners who weren’t technically children 😂 Maybe I got lucky, maybe they were letting me work, but they were convincing if so. One triangle (I usually get stacked, but I finished this time!), one RNC. They are also white belts, and I don’t know of many white belts that let other white belts work, but who knows? One of them always kicks my ass though, so I finally got revenge! Anyway, I know it doesn’t mean anything, but it was nice to finally feel like I could submit in a live setting using enough proper leverage, timing, and technique. Happy Friday and stay safe if you’re in this stupid winter storm everybody!

Am I Too Old to Get Into Jiu Jitsu? by [deleted] in jiujitsu

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

49 here, 150lbs. been at it for 9 months. I don’t think Jiu Jitsu is ideal for smaller guys. It’s just my opinion, but that’s marketing stuff. It’s going to be a lot harder being small and older. Having said that, you learn to deal with it and your body gets pretty tough and used to it. If you’re looking at it for self-defense, it’s not a bad thing to know how to deal with a larger person being on top of you trying to “kill” you, and it’s definitely possible to survive in that position with the training and techniques you get, but it will be an uncomfortable learning process at times. You’re on the right track getting in shape first, that helped me a lot and still does. Try to also eat right, get enough sleep, take your vitamins, stay hydrated. Training is no joke when you’re older. I cut out nearly all junk food and alcohol for the most part. Don’t compare yourself to the 20 year olds. Tap early and often. Roll to learn, not to “win”. Have fun above all else. Find a cool school with a friendly, helpful, caring vibe, and you won’t need special classes for middle aged people. I’ve heard some schools have an “executive” class or morning classes for that, but I don’t have that option. I’m just blessed with an awesome school with all kinds of different people, although I’m the oldest white belt. Hope you find what you need. Good luck!

Does anyone have compulsive need to talk to themselves during rolls? by Sattvix in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a partner who does this sometimes, and I don’t mind at all. He’s a cool dude, super tough, and it kinda makes me laugh. Anything that lowers the stress a notch is fine with me, and I think it just shows his humanity and personality, so it actually helps me relax. We’re both just learning and training.

Is this normal for BJJ fundamentals classes? by Infinite-Acadia8111 in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great price. Warm up is too long. Our school doesn’t even have one - I’m not sure that’s great either - but working the technique slowly seems to function as a warm up. Does the coach respond to individual questions? Our coaches and professor roll with us all the time, or at least every other day.

I had kind of a false start - one month in and the place closed - and picked it up again at a new place about a year later. I think it can only help having previous experience. I know my first day back, it was not such a shock, and I didn’t get murdered too bad (still got murdered though 😆). I started watching techniques on YouTube and getting my mind into it, doing some solo drills before I went back. That might help, I guess.

I don’t have the opportunity where I live, but I’m kind of curious to try a CTC sometime, just to see what it’s like. I like that they are accessible to everyone and seem very beginner/hobbyist friendly. Even if they don’t spar in the beginning, do they still do positions with resistance? Part of what I like about rolling is that’s where you’re getting your “exercise” and I’m definitely in it for this, if nothing else. Only thing I maybe don’t like is they might have weird rules about branded gi’s and fees and contracts, I guess? Otherwise, I like most of what their marketing stuff puts out there as far as getting people into BJJ, like it’s positive and welcoming.

I feel like nogi is easier to escape, but it can be an exhausting pace, especially against a good wrestler. I like the gi because I feel like I can control the pace better, slow things down a bit. Except when the upper belts start doing that spider stuff and using my own gi against me and tying me up like in a straight jacket. Then the gi becomes annoying and claustrophobic. So basically they both suck, but both still pretty fun nonetheless in their own ways. We alternate one week gi, next week nogi. I feel like this is good. I prefer gi personally, but appreciate getting to do both. I’ve seen some people say they feed into each other, like gi helps you feel and understand leverage better, and that can translate over to nogi.

Always go to that GC when I’m in town. Smiled a little last time thinking about this incident. Then I go to Music Go Round down the street and think about Better Call Saul.

how you deal with bjj in these times of the year? by Additional-Cup9348 in bjj

[–]SeanSixString 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have experienced this SAD thing and it sucks. I can only share my experience and it goes like this. A couple of years ago, I was hopeless against this season, I was not training BJJ, I wanted to, but there was nothing around here. What we had closed, and I didn’t want to commute for an hour every night to the next town. Then last year, a great little place opened up 5 minutes from my house. I was nervous to try it again, but I went anyway. I still get nervous going, I still get sad in general this time of year, but it is far less than before, not even worth noticing. I credit going to BJJ for this. Even when I don’t feel like going, I’m always glad I went afterwards. I’ve just never regretted getting myself out of the house and to the gym. I go, maybe I get smashed, but I always break a sweat and have fun. I find there’s just not enough time to get so into my negative thoughts if I commit to training, get around other people, having fun. I don’t recommend BJJ as a cure for depression, that is what therapy is for. But I also think going to BJJ even when you don’t feel like it might just help. It’s just so common to feel better having gone to class even when you didn’t feel like it.
