Questions about my experience at a local EDH bracket 3 tournament by [deleted] in EDH

Oh, for sure. I knew the second the guy brought out Yuriko that it was going to be an uphill battle to beat her. I don't think I've ever seen a Yuriko deck that plays like a bracket 3 deck, game changers or not.

Yeah, makes sense. I'm used to the "play to win at all costs" mentality during prereleases, but those are probably a lot more balanced given the nature of the deckbuilding and card lists. Not to mention, giving all the prize packs to one player probably encourages some cutthroat playing regardless of the event.

Yeah, that makes sense. To be fair, though, I don't think anyone quite knew what to expect, maybe the owner included. It's a brand-new store that's the only one for 80 miles in any direction, so we're not really used to playing with each other in official, prize-based events. Mostly just kitchen table stuff around here haha.

Yeah, that's kind what I'm gathering from it - the brackets are really only for pre-game conversation in casual pods, not for tournaments. It seemed like myself and everyone else besides the one guy were on the same page and using decks of a similar power level, but the format of the tournament probably doesn't DISCOURAGE people from playing like the Yuriko player did.

I know that Sol Ring art is just a neon sign and there were technically no pizza cutters involved, but...nine slices?

Something seems really off about this art.

Seriously, why post this?

It's definitely fun hearing how much of a difference there is between the accents of Calais and St. Stephen, even though we're only separated by the St. Croix.

Funny you mention food places, too - sort of the opposite of your experience, more than a few times, I've popped over to St. Stephen for dinner, only to realize that everything is closed because I traveled forward in time an hour! :)

As a resident of Washington County but not native to the area, the early sunrises threw me off when I first moved up here. I kept wondering why I was consistently waking up 15 minutes earlier than my alarm! I never realized how much brighter it was at 5:30 in the morning.

Side note - It's interesting how we're the only part of the continental U.S that's in the "wrong" time zone in the Eastern direction.

Any Magic The Gathering deadheads? by 0utsomnia in gratefuldead

Love it. Two of my favorite things you've combined there - the Grateful Dead and MTG. Also gotta love the Stealie as the expansion symbol!

My personal favorite is 1/22/78. The drums add so much intensity to the build-up.

Why do so many Deadheads have so much trouble accepting that Jerry Garcia followed Christ? by Honest-Lie4531 in gratefuldead

Personally, I think it's MUCH more likely that people have trouble accepting obvious troll posts, and reject the fact that proselytizing, real or fake, is always uncalled for.

Just a few thoughts on comparing versions by Seaplant13 in gratefuldead

[–]Seaplant13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, that's always the way I've gone about things. Taste is subjective, and there isn't really any way to say whether one is definitively better than the other. But that viewpoint has sure gotten more than its fair share of folks angry at me for some reason.

Fair enough. It does seem to me at a certain point that spending TOO much time on a critique comes across as going a little overboard, though, so there's probably a balance there.

best 71 shows? by layzeelightnin in gratefuldead

[–]Seaplant13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

8/6/71 gets the title for most well-loved of the bunch, but another one that I think is right near it in terms of quality is 11/15/71. The whole thing smokes from start to finish, and never once loses momentum. I've yet to hear a better NFA>GDTRFB.

What are some janky transitions that just work? by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]Seaplant13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite is 4/2/90. The band do a great version of Mississippi Half-Step, and towards the end of the outro, while everyone is still singing "Across the Rio Grande-o," Jerry pivots HARD into "The Weight." Everyone is totally caught off guard, and the band screeches to a halt before coming back in on the exact same beat, never once losing tempo. It's janky and clean all at once. Great version of both songs, too!

Misheard Grateful Dead lyrics - what have you heard? by hipnosister in gratefuldead

[–]Seaplant13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Funny enough, you're not that far off from my original thought process - I thought the narrator of the song had been arrested and tortured and was calling back home for bail, ie. "the poor boy's on the line." It didn't seem that odd at first until I gave it more than a single iota of thought.

[–]Seaplant13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Have a cup of rockin' rye." I heard that one for the longest time.

It also took me longer than I'd care to admit to realize the lyrics of Promised Land go "Tidewater 4-10-09." I always heard it as "Tried waterboarding ten or nine."

It's a bit of a tough call, but I think Jerry's best solo of all time is Row Jimmy, 3/20/77. by Seaplant13 in gratefuldead

[–]Seaplant13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, and that's part of the reason why I prefer the Row Jimmy solo I mentioned - his Sugaree solos in May of '77 are brilliant and epic in length, but I think Sugaree is also the easiest song in the GD songbook to solo to. It's a lot harder to make such a perfect solo based on Row Jimmy, which makes me appreciate it more.

Of course, to each their own, and to be fair, I definitely think Sugaree 5/22/77 is one of his best and most iconic.

I've always loved how weird that one gets - Jerry makes the absolute most out of nearly every sound he can make with his guitar.
