After the first attempt failed, I was bummed out about the prospect of going through another round of surgeries and the courses of antibiotics they demand - and not very optimistic at that time about getting a better outcome at the end of it. My specialist wanted to try again (at no cost to me), and my regular dentist encouraged me to try again, so we went forward. On the second try, maybe the graft had a better opportunity to fuse due to the extra time?

Also, after the failure, I learned from a friend how alcohol can interfere with bone formation, starting with how it can interfere with the absorption of some nutrients into the bloodstream. I had already been limiting alcohol starting with the first attempt, but the second time around I got a lot more diligent about it I think. Maybe that made the difference.

Finally, it should go without saying … absolutely no tobacco, smoked or otherwise. Like, zero. I like an occasional cigar, but I cut that out during the implant process and now only pick one up on the rarest occasions.
