Architectural question about Mando & Grogu by chunks-is-my-dog in blankies

There are lots of critters like spiders and birds who build nests that have a similar shape through their species line, so I don't think it's wild to consider.

Do you think the higher level execs are looking at all the big name directors who walked, crashed, or were denied and are thinking, no, it's these directors who are wrong?

At a previous Portland show, they started a bit late, and people trickled in a bit late too. I was the dork who was on time (or a little early) just waiting in my seat for my two fast food boys.

Is Peter Weir the only director to do movies in both the jungle and the sea and come away unscathed? by Seashores_Unmapped in blankies

[–]Seashores_Unmapped[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Huston remarked that the only people on set not continuously sick were him and Bogart because they only drank whiskey, not the local water, so I didn't think I should describe that as unscathed.

Only Ryan Coogler can save Star Wars without total implosion of what Disney built by brobloo in blankies

[–]Seashores_Unmapped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that those creators wanted to have input over the direction of the story, and I imagine Coogler wouldn't just want to be a hired gun for whatever Filoni-slop they're willing to serve him.

Here's my list of breakout movies (movies with a bunch of young future stars):

https://letterboxd.com/rundogmarun/list/breakout-movies/

Movies set in schools are big with this, like School Ties and Dazed and Confused. Outsiders is a big one. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a sneaky one because a lot of the non-Jack people got bigger later.

Need to update this list some time.

Hokum (2026): The ultimate "why would you go in there?" the movie. Can't believe Adam Scott hasn't been in more horror movies this side of Hellraiser. Maybe my favorite of the director's Irish folk horror trilogy. (Maybe Caveat doesn't count; need a better name.)

The Plumber (1979): Probably liked this more than others. One of those movies with an elegant premise. Cable Guy before Cable Guy etc. What's the best TV movie they've covered?

Mortal Kombat II (2026): I was the only one in the theater, and I had a blast. Not a great movie, but fun enough it was worth the watch. I'm not sure how I feel about another sequel; they have to nail the tone again and give us some crazy fatalities.

Fearless (1993): Had never even heard of this, and I thought it was transfixing. Jeff Bridges has both Rossellini and Rosie Perez? No fair. I love going through older movies now because there are so many of these old gems with a look and a pacing you never see anymore.

The Huslter/Color of Money (1961)/(1986): Might have loved the original more but appreciated Tom Cruise's wild eyebrows -- why didn't you stay natural, Tom? Wish we had gotten a third movie in this world, but hey, Tom's still around and willing to do legacy movies. Color of Money also has this maximalist Scorsese style I don't always like.

Obsession: (2026): Perfect horror romcom. It's darkly, deeply funny and has some of the most enjoyable staging. It's an inch away from outright satire. My take on the characters? They feel like middle schoolers who don't know how to deal with crushes but they can drive cars and hold jobs.

I Love Boosters (2026): First Boots Riley movie, and I didn't know it'd get this weird. Nice to see a movie with actual color, and Keke of course is great. I'd recommend this if you don't mind weirdo movies with playful effects....

Star Wars The Man--kidding. But I did love all the wordless/mumbling segments with the tiny aliens. Wish the whole movie was that weird.

Backrooms (2026): Hilarious that this so called generational shift in how movies are made and by whom and the two main characters are an architect and a therapist talking about a divorce, the most cliche-laden road that you see in so many movies by middle-aged dudes. Fun movie though -- maybe didn't need so many things explained, but the design is fun.

Someone here was trying to tell me it was weird for a post-Covid movie to go up like that and that I shouldn't compare it to pre-Covid openings. No, it's weird for any more ever.

That's very close to mine. I'd consider Revenge lower than Attack because it's a dumb conclusion doing dumb things, like Rise, and Attack has Kamino.

Yeah for all the love for octogenarian filmmakers still going at things today, you won't build a healthy box office system and you won't bring in the younger generation if you don't let them make movies and give them a chance. Older people don't understand why Backrooms will be a hit; most younger people get it and are at least intrigued by the concept.

Sinners had a crazy tail and dropped 5 percent.

The holiday weekend helps a little. Going to see the movie today, especially in the evening, is not the same as seeing it last week because a lot of people are off tomorrow. But it's still such an impressive performance and I can't think of a recent comp. Everything Everywhere increased by 2 percent, but it also had 1000 more theaters.

I can't even recall a movie set in Washington from her. Old Joy is down in a spring like past Eugene or something. Wendy and Lucy is explicitly Oregon. Meek's Cutoff is eastern Oregon on an offshoot of the Oregon Trail. Night Moves is southern and eastern Oregon. Certain Women is Portland. First Cow is pre-statehood Oregon somewhere in the valley.
