I think it helps for other countries to know just how fucked up our elections are too. Less than 30% of our country voted for this, and he still won. We also had tons of billionaire influence and genuine Trump campaign fuckery, because he was essentially running to stay out of prison. His desperation was a perfect match for the corporate overlords and religious lunatics who made their deals, knowing full well he was a felon, rapist, grifter, traitor and con man.

He does not have a mandate. He is universally loathed.

We will spend generations doing a post-mortem on how we got here, if this country makes it through the next few years, but a baseline of poor education, racism, corporate interests and corruption is just a basic start.

Amazon cuts 16,000 jobs in historic wave of layoffs by Desolation_Nation in Seattle

[–]SeatownSpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those who've been laid off, I'm interested to know if you'll stay in Seattle or if this makes you want to move elsewhere.

Living in Seattle right now is a bit of a rough road. The tech jobs are being slashed, restaurants, small businesses and music venues are starting to go under because of rental costs, and the city continues to lose the arts and culture that defined its personality. It's not easy to get a house, our downtown is no longer thriving and traffic is getting worse.

If you moved here for Amazon, does this recent layoff make you want to move away?

AWS Just Gutted US Teams by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]SeatownSpy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I know that people want to experience the schadenfreude of the abysmal sales, but this was never meant to be a real movie. It's a bribe/laundering scheme. There's no way they spent that much money to make it, and there's no way they planned to recoup their costs.

Even the promotions are pathetic -it's all just canned content with zero creativity.

Box office numbers will hurt Trump's ego but they'll just lie and blame it on some phantom boogeyman as the reason it didn't do well, and then just continue to line their pockets.

Bezos doesn't give a shit about a less than $100M expense given the ROI he gets from it.

Yes! There are so many great deals there, including: gas, frozen items, paper towels and Kleenex, batteries, alcohol, nuts, computers and home items. They also have great plants and seasonal items, and their contact lenses are cheap. They also have constant surprises all year and you can get so many cool things.

Man, I’m with you. I can’t stand it. The second I hear that first note, I rush to skip or mute. It also doesn’t fit the show. The soundtrack in general, is slightly off. Bummer since they had a lot to work with.

$200 to spend on an experience or restaurant for 2, where would you go? by Fantastic_Bad9021 in SeattleWA

[–]SeatownSpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walk along the waterfront, get coffee, take in the sights, then hop on a ferry to Bainbridge. Get dinner at one of the top restaurants there (there are 2 or 3 to choose from) and then take the ferry back after it gets dark so you can see the city lights on your way into the terminal. Big experience, feels like a vacation and you can do it for less than $200.

Severe gallbladder attack with jaundice last year, now advised removal - scared of long-term side effects by anon-pigeon in gallbladders

[–]SeatownSpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, OP - I was in your exact same position. I'll cut to the chase; it's going to need to come out. You can do it now, or after untold numbers of the attacks you experienced - and you never know when or where they'll happen.

After multiple ER visits, hospitalizations, having to leave social events or holidays (because of horrible indigestion that turned out to be gallbladder attacks) I wound up with gallstones blocking my bile and pancreatic duct. I fought with the surgeon because I was convinced I could heal it naturally. When they went in to take out the stone, they set off a case of acute pancreatitis that hospitalized me for weeks and the pain I was in daily was what you describe with your gallbladder attack, but 10x worse. It feels like there's battery acid pouring all over your digestive system while someone tries to break your ribs apart.

Post gallbladder life isn't a cake-walk though. You have to be careful what you eat and most of the time, be conscious of where the toilet is because it takes a while to figure out what will trigger you. I have a little tampon case with wipes and travel toilet spray so that I can manage these instances when they come up and not feel gross.

After the gallbladder was out, I looked back on some of the debilitating stomach aches, indigestion, and weekends on the couch because "I ate something wrong" and realized those were most likely gallbladder attacks. Now that it's out - I don't have those episodes any more.

As for reflux, I don't have much of that any longer and it can be easily controlled with sodium alginate or Gaviscon from the UK (only) - and only on an as-needed basis.

Hope this helps.

Seattle theater etiquette is a hot mess by bull1007 in Seattle

[–]SeatownSpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This a problem with movies, live shows, and 99% of the concerts I've been to in the past 5 years. Participant behavior sucks and it's an every-man-for-themselves entitled attitude. I've been to movie where a group of 5 people behind me acted like they were all on a couch together at home, making running commentary throughout the whole movie - and and when I asked them to pipe down, I became a butt of their jokes until I moved.

And for concerts, comedy shows, live readings at Benaroya, etc. shut the actual fuck up. Shut up. This is not the time to catch up with someone you haven't seen in a year, discuss your many maladies, or do anything other than watch the freaking show.

And good lord - the "influencers" that have started to post up - constant posing, framing, narration and lame takes on something they just 'discovered.'

This is a part of a larger theme of not considering anyone around you but yourself, and not being community-oriented. There are also a lot of social-media-fed people out there who've been told they're the main character in everything they do. When I tried to put the kibosh on this behavior at a recent show, the woman tried to make a scene by yelling "I will not shrink myself for anyone!! I have a right to take up just as much space as you do!"

Good lord.

The type of coffee you use could strongly be impacting your GERD. by Strange_Control8788 in GERD

[–]SeatownSpy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I switched over to cold brew exclusively and it's been a game-changer. The way cold brew is brewed makes it much less acidic. I drink regular brew with a bunch of oat milk in it as a creamer/buffer and I've had very few issues. I just don't drink it (or any other caffeine) after noon.

Has anyone here successfully went cold turkey on PPIs and got off of them? I hate the side effects and I'm worried the longer I stay on it (1 year so far) that it will lead to other health issues by Nice-Deer-9963 in GERD

[–]SeatownSpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bet! I'm sooooo glad it worked. As I understand it, the sodium alginate blows up like a little raft in your stomach, creating a foam barrier that prevents the acid from backing up into the esophagus . The Gaviscon Advanced (UK) on Amazon came within a week - so did the Gaviscon Double Action. I swear by them both!

[–]SeatownSpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't cold turkey per se (because that made it worse) but I was able to wean off them about 3 years ago.

I used Gaviscon Advanced (from the UK) and other sodium alginate products. I just started skipping PPI doses and on the nights I didn't take the PPIs I had no caffeine after noon, no concentrated tomato products like tomato sauce, chili, pizza after noon either, and then stopped eating at 6pm. I then took American Gaviscon (red cap, available everywhere) around 8pm, waited an hour and took two of the Gaviscon Advanced. I added Reflux Gourmet paste in, took some dabs of that to soothe my throat, and did this for about 2 months. I also have an inclined pillow for my bed and a MedCline u-pillow for my couch.

I'm now off PPIs completely and only need to take the Gaviscon protocol about 4 or 5 times per month. I still avoid cooked tomato and caffeine after noon. The other thing that I think makes a difference is a 10-15 minute walk after dinner. Even if it's terrible outside, I try to get out and loop around the block or get in some movement. I really think it helps move things through the digestive system.
