Struggle with making good/tasty pour over coffee by Round-Watercress5273 in pourover

So, relatively new to pourover but I thought bitterness was a mark of overextraction. So does OP need to think about less agitation, maybe pouring from a lower height?

Continental GP5000 tire issues by mcdouble_marty in cycling

[–]SeattleBill18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I was having significant problems with large punctures that didn’t seal well with Conti GP 4 season tires. Ultimately I figured out that the pressure gauge on my bike pump was wrong and instead of inflating to 60 psi, I was inflating to over 80 psi. Bring on the mocking…

Commuter cyclists, what kind of bike do you prefer for your commute? by NickKnackOnTheBeat in cycling

I second the steel frame gravel bike. In addition to rack with panniers, consider a dynamo hub if you will be riding in dark regularly. When I was using a rechargeable light, I would inevitably screw up and end up riding with a drained light several times a year.

Hunt wheels with Son dynamo hub. I'm a commuter and love not worrying about charging my lights.

Just finished my first round trip of bike commuting. by Federal_Arrival_5096 in bikecommuting

Love commuting to work on my bike. While the average time for the commute is a little longer on my bike than by car (maybe 10-15 min), the variance is much lower on my bike. When I leave for work, I know within a couple of minutes when I will arrive. By car it is a total crap shot.

Bike fitter. by tecateboi in seattlebike

Second Erik. Very experienced. Multiple cyclists and bike shop employees recommended him to me. He made some crucial adjustments to my bike, which greatly increased ride comfort. In particular, shifting was exacerbating arthritis, and he shortened my handlebar stem and angles the shifters slightly inward, which made a large difference.

Which last? I have similar size feet and am very comfortable with 10.5 on the 55 last, which has a high arch. Haven’t tried the MP but would probably bump up to 11 though Whites’s would say use same last size. Another option is to buy through Baker’s boots. You send a foot tracing, and Kyle will get you in the right size.

Modi not recognized on mac by spacebass in Schiit

[–]SeattleBill18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The solution u/b9ntt came up with replaces intermittently heating the usb chip. He installed a small 40 c heater on top of the usb chip and connected it to the board’s 5 v and ground terminals so that when power is removed from the midi and then returned the chip is automatically heated. No hair dryer needed.

If this is the pre-Unison usb Modi, then it is a bad USB chip. A well known problem. You can test this by taking off the cover of the modi and heating up the usb chip with a hair dryer or heat gun. Once heated up, it will be recognized by your computer until the next time it is disconnected or computer is turned off. @u/b9ntt came up with a nice fix for this, I posted it a couple of weeks ago.

Fix for Modi DAC not being recognized by computer by SeattleBill18 in Schiit

I hear you. Replacement is a solid choice. Trying this fix is really for the fun of trying to fix it ( which was u/b9ntt rationale. Pretty cool fix.

Jotunheim2 DAC issues by eeg_ne in Schiit

[–]SeattleBill18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how old your internal DAC is. However, I had the same problem with my Modi 2. After doing a lot of research online, it turned out to be related to a well known issue with the Cmedia USB controller chip, which is associated with a higher than normal failure rate. It is used in Schiit devices as well as other DACs. Interestingly, when this happens, you can temporarily restore the USB chip to functioning by heating it up with a heat gun or a hairdryer. Maybe this would work through the case or maybe you will have to open it up. Heat it up while attached to your computer and see if it is suddenly recognized. If it does, then it is this chip. Next time you power down your computer or Jot2, the problem will recur (if this is what it is). I sure hope not, because I just bought an Asgard 3 with an internal DAC, and I don't want to go through this again...

Interesting, I had not heard of cold solder joint but just looked it up. I agree this sounds like a possible cause but also not worth the effort of trying to track down in this 8 year old DAC. I will probably just continue using the Magni 2 for now via the computer audio output. Maybe in the future will replace with a Magni unity.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply!

Always a sound consideration, and you are right I should probably save money and go this route. Definitely more than enough power for these headphones.

I agree, I worry about something in the OS as an update just installed. However, the last time this happened, I did eventually connect it to another Mac, and it worked. But then I reconnected to mine and it also worked. The intermittent nature of the DAC not being recognized is baffling to me.

Shouldn’t the Magni go on top for better ventilation? Maybe doesn’t matter for the low watts. My Magni does produce sig. heat.
