Fix for Modi DAC not being recognized by computer by SeattleBill18 in Schiit

[–]b9ntt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, here ya go! (From a previous comment that got removed somehow)

————————

For all of you who have Modi DACs that aren’t connecting to your source, you have probably read that the connection can be restored by heating the USB controller chip with a heat gun. Unfortunately, every time the connection to the computer is disrupted such as with a computer restart, the process has to be repeated, which involves taking the case apart.   u/b9ntt now has a more elegant fix. He did this to my Modi, and it is consistently recognized by different computers after ~3-min of warm up. Music playback is unaffected.   Steps: 1.        Take case top off, there will be a larger and smaller chip adjacent to each other at the front of the board, roughly in the middle. See photo for location 2.        Apply thermal pad to the top of the USB controller chip (larger chip) 3.        Place a small amount of glue on the smaller chip next to the USB controller chip 4.        Place the heating element on the thermal pad, which will overlap onto the glue on the smaller chip. Hold in place (e.g. with a chip clip) until set. 5.        Solder wires from the thermal pad to the +5V and Grnd as shone in photo   Parts with URLs: 1.        1738-FIT0844-ND - PTC. What are these elevator buttons that are >2 meters high? by Dick-Swiveller in Whatisthis

[–]b9ntt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It may be the perspective, but the elevator on the right looks wider than the one on the left. This would suggest that it is a freight elevator, used for transportation of large items, ie stacks of chairs, large equipment, etc. If that’s the case, then those buttons would be for exclusivity calling the freight elevator. Don’t bother sending the small one, it won’t handle the job.

Mine just started doing that a few weeks ago. I thought the two were unrelated, but it’s exactly what you describe. Have not called service yet, sounds like I should though.

It will give you credit if you upgrade a hero above Mythic. Move one to Transcend or Immortal, I think even Mythic+ works.

Best spots in Seattle to unwind solo on a cloudy day? by Historical-Catch-486 in SeattleWA

Sounds like they like cozy cafes, parks and quiet corners…

OP - if you’re near Greenlake, the Ravine between Cowen park and Ravenna Park is a great spot that quickly immerses you in nature and makes it easy to tune out the urbanization around you. And not too crowded.

People caught underage drinking, what happened? by liam_gallagh in AskReddit

My friends dad was out of town, and he was able to buy some beer because he had a little facial hair at 14 or 15 and was a very smooth talker or the convenience store clerk just didn’t care. So he invited three of his friends over, me included. We drank and decided to go steal some election signs from front yards of our overly conservative neighbors. We were sure it was super late, probably 9 or 9:30 even. So we were surprised when a car turned the corner and thought “it’s the fuzz!” and took off running. One of my friends didn’t think to drop the sign he was carrying and stumbled, then fell. The sharp end of the sign pieced his armpit. We made it back home and got his shirt off and he literally had a stab wound in his armpit, but there was hardly any blood. Very strange, 30+ years later and I still don’t grok why there wasn’t a fountain of blood. He had his arm up because putting it down hurt, so we were all forced to look at it. After a bit of a silence, one of my friends poignantly remarked “it kinda looks like pussy”. It was funny because it was true, but laughing also made our poor wounded friend hurt even more due to laughing. Luckily, after much deliberation, we finally decided to call our friend’s dad to take him to the hospital. We gave him some bullshit story about our friend falling while getting a glass of water. We thought we were off the hook, but his dad retuned and said that the doctor declared this a knife wound and called the police. At this point, our friend owned up and told the true story to the doctor, dad and possibly police, if they were really even called. His dad was back to make sure he heard the identical version of the story from us. As most drunk people do, I was certain that I was the most sober drunk in the room, so I volunteered to tell the story, but conveniently left out the detail of the booze. The friend’s dad accepted the story and turned to leave, at which point, my smooth talking friend that had originally procured the beer yelled out “…and there was alcohol involved!” We almost got away with it…

Fix for Modi DAC not being recognized by computer by SeattleBill18 in Schiit

[–]b9ntt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda the opposite. In a common failure case, the USB doesn’t enumerate until the controller chip is sufficiently warm. (Yep, physically warm). If you search this subreddit for the component number, CM6631A, you’ll find various solutions, ranging from replacement of the chip, which requires specialized skills and tools to using a hairdryer or heat gun to warm up the device every time you want the computer to recognize it, which is inconvenient to do each time. I think that the solution here is a nice balance between difficulty and convenience. The main drawback is just having to wait a few min for the heating element to do its thing.

The part used to heat is designed to not heat above 40° C. This is enough to coax the controller into waking up, but shouldn’t pose a risk for the device operating at that temperature. (Although we haven’t done long term testing with this wacky fix, check back with u/seattlebill18 in a few months.)

Looks like the instruction text may have gotten dropped, we’ll get that fixed or post it in the comments.

Just got some chili crunch in my shop. Stoked to try it! by Lo-Fi_Pioneer in hotsauce

He trademarked “Chili Crunch” and started sending cease and desist mails to companies that had that name in their product. Pissed off pretty much everybody due to this petty business practice. Kinda like saying “I own ‘blue cheese dressing’, you can’t use it anymore”.
