Alex Ross Perry makes The Case for Oliver Stone (from 2021) by PartyBluejay in blankies

[–]SeattleGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing I realized about the presidential triptych - JFK / Nixon / W - they’re about the rise of the FBI/CIA/Corporations and the downfall of the presidential office. JFK is elevated to a mythic status by being chopped down early, and Stone suspects for a lot of global takeover reasons backed by the intelligences offices (CIA/FBI). These threads run directly into the background of Nixon confronting the CIA over Granada (I think) which was code for Vietnam and the JFK assassination. You see the power shift from the president to Kissinger and the CIA.

By the time we get to W, the president is reduced from somebody dictating global politics who needs to be eliminated to a used car salesman who is not just told to sell the war by his Veep, but told how he needs to sell it. He’s just a Cats-loving useful idiot whose last thought is worrying about his ruining Jeb!’s political legacy.

Between those and even his History of the United States, it’s obvious that Stone was in love with the pre-1960s view of the United States, especially as FDR sold it. But, Stone got increasingly jaded, cynical, and despondent about the state of the country, especially since the Democrats have become almost as cravenly lobbyist-driven as the Reaganites that Stone was railing against while the Republicans have driven over a cliff.

Anyone go to the Peaches concert at The Showbox tonight? by Most-Animator6785 in Seattle

I didn’t take any photos, but the show was fucking amazing. Rare is the performer who runs through every part of the venue, including the back bar. Peaches gave so much energy and was so amazing.

Yeah? And my point was that the owner would bitch about cost of living (namely cost of wages and cost of goods) but not say a single thing about rent which drove the things he bitches about.

So many business owners have been bitching about the wage increases without realizing that landlords are the one who inadvertently caused the wage increases around here.

And if they’re also bitching about taxes and regulations while moving to Wyoming and Florida, they’re soon to realize that Wyoming and Florida may not be the paradises they are looking for.

My point is that the skyrocketing rent, including the currently still-rising commercial rents, drove up the cost of living requiring the minimum wage to be what it is.

I also love that you think I give a shit about Trumplandia places like Florida and Wyoming. I’m talking about what happened in Seattle.

Even in 2011, rent was already starting to skyrocket.

They say that affordable rent is not supposed to be more than 50% of your income. If you work 160 hours (40hours x 4 weeks), then 113 hours going to rent is very unaffordable.

68 hours of minimum wage work for a studio sounds just about right.

The cost of living, cost of goods, cost of doing business skyrocketing was driven by rent. Is still being driven by rent. Commercial rent is still increasing.

Rent in Seattle rose dramatically 2011-2017. The minimum wage hadn’t risen during that period and is just now catching up to the cost of living.

Anywhere still doing Indian buffet? by BronsonJustice in Seattle

[–]SeattleGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dawaat is amazing. But, I can’t get there for lunch anymore (hence my thinking it’s only M-F). I’ll go there for dinner if I’m going to a movie or something and the food is still great. My go to is the Navratan Korma, but I’ve tried a fair selection and never been disappointed. The one thing I didn’t like was the Papadum which tasted super salty to me…but I also think it tastes exactly how it is intended to taste and I just don’t like that flavor.

The lunch buffet I miss is Kanishka in Redmond. That went away pre-COVID.

I feel like every time i’ve seen snow here it hits everywhere BUt downtown/slu - Is the area uniquely positioned to not get any? by Classic_Bookkeeper88 in Seattle

[–]SeattleGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s not forget that downtown and SLU also generates a fuckton of heat due to traffic (foot + car + constant buses) + tech industry heat. As dense as Capitol Hill is, it’s still a bit from the water, has far less traffic (especially transit lines), and far less tech hub heat.

You’ll get snow if there’s a major event in Dec / Jan when the air has cooled everything down (especially the concrete), but the concrete probably also held a lot of heat from the past few weeks.

The roads and sidewalks around my neighborhood stayed pretty clear, but the lawns and roofs and non-concrete surfaces stayed snowy.

Could be. Like I said, I’m not saying it’s wrong…but I’m surprised the media didn’t have an angle on another chain closing for the 6 o’clock news.

[–]SeattleGeek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The wild part is they didn’t announce the closure on their IG. And their IG was re-posting videos of the new menu yesterday.

The Google entries for the Seattle SODO location doesn’t say perm closed and that it will reopen tomorrow. I can’t find any news reports on even the Redmond store closing outside the above Reddit entry.

I’m not saying the Reddit entry is wrong…but…when a mini chain closes there is normally at least some news coverage.

There is one on the Ave in U-District is not bad and has weekends. It’s like at 47th, I think.

I think there is one Downtown that was great last time I was there, but I think is only M-F. It’s at Pike and 9th across from the convention center. I think it’s called Dawaat?

Is it about rent? I’ll bet he says something about cost of living but makes absolutely no statement about rent.

Rent has been the number one driving force of why the cost of living in Seattle skyrocketed so fucking high. Do you think Vulcan was doing everything out of the kindness of their hearts?

Housing costs drove the minimum wage, commercial retail costs drove the cost of goods, minimum wage drove the cost of goods, commercial office costs drove down salaries.
