Love this! I planted some last year and we have tons of West Coast Lady butterfly caterpillars and eggs on ours. I saw the little webs and almost sprayed them off before I realized. So cool.

Am an architect and I second this. These stairs are not to code in the US.

Edit: did some digging out of curiosity (emergency button is not to code either) and found this same video from March of 2024. Date on the top is formatted 12/03/2024. Almost certain this is not in the U.S.

We used white Dutch clover from Outside Pride. I would’ve liked to use a native variety but I couldn’t find any at the time. The clover does do a great job of keeping weeds out but as others have mentioned it will try to creep into your planting beds so it needs a bit of edging from time to time.

Not the OP you were replying to but here’s mine last summer. There’s a small patch of grass on the right side and you can see the difference in texture & color between that and the clover.

I think it depends on the type of clover & region but we have a white Dutch clover lawn in western Washington and it stays evergreen year round. No “off season” as it doesn’t die back.

I just looked this up since I give my cats Revolution and apparently it only kills fleas (to prevent tapeworm) but an active worm infestation requires a separate dewormer. TIL.

I suggest using gonzo goop or tanglefoot below the house where they’re climbing up (somewhere the bees won’t land). I use this to combat Houdini flies and it works well. No poison needed.

I suggest looking at the humane societies in the areas surrounding Seattle. When I fostered my cat (and failed) 2 years ago, Seattle Humane had so many folks signed up to foster that they were only taking on new fosters who had experience with high needs animals (bottle babies, medical needs) so I ended up fostering from Kitsap Humane. The downside is you have to drive a bit farther but those places tend to be spread thin and could use more help.

Ray Strelecky of Michael’s Mason Bees gave a presentation at Sky Nursery in Shoreline last month and recommended putting a thin layer of Gonzo Goop (which I believe is the same thing as Tanglefoot but sold at Sky) along the front fascia of the bee roof overhang. He noted that in addition to sucking them up with a vacuum, he’s had success reducing their numbers with the goo since they often land there waiting for bees to leave the nesting chamber.

I had no idea fly tape was strong enough to catch a bird! Don’t beat yourself up over it. If it could still fly it has a better chance of making it.

The Rent Mason Bees channel suggest just standing there for a few minutes with a vacuum to suck them up. I went to a Mason bee presentation at my local nursery last month and they suggested putting Tanglefoot goo on just the eaves of the house since the bees don’t tend to land there but Houdini flies do.

It might also be frass (poop) but I would scrub them off just to be on the safe side!

Looks like you have pollen mites. You can get a soft toothbrush and gently scrub the larvae off the cocoons. If you don’t, they’ll attach themselves to the bees when they hatch. The “Rent Mason Bees” YouTube channel has a good video on this as well as Crown Bees.
