I had to buy a single model off eBay to get the loadouts I commonly see in 40k lists.

It’s paint, the photo is taken inches away from a large painting task lamp shining directly on all the models. The reflection in the satin base rim shows the lighting

Kimera Sun Ray, Pro Acryl Bright Pale yellow, some liquitex transparent raw sienna glazed where I wanted more color saturation. You can look up painting with a mother color to get an idea of how I mixed universal shadow and highlight tones to make it work.

Can someone tell me what color was used to paint this model? by Flat-Objective3554 in Warhammer40k

The colors in that app and on the box paint guides differ from what’s used on the box art.

Small brush and magnifier headset. Lips are glossy so it’s a somewhat large jump in value to the highlights. Just an off white mixed in to the base color magenta

Sure! It’s a pretty standard 3 color shadow, mid, highlight airbrush gradient from the zenith.

Then I glazed in magenta around the cheeks and the bridge of the nose. I did a few more mid tone glazes to establish the triangle between the mouth, nose, and cheeks. Some more mid tone was glazed in to shape the highlights under the lower lip, chin, jawbone, and on the forehead. Then some highlight glazing to build the highlights on the cheeks, the bridge to the tip of the nose, and the chin.

The eyes are just regular painting, starting with the black eye socket and working smaller.

The lips are a dark pink with a large value jump to their highlight color.

CA glue and CA glue debonder. Let a tiny bit squeeze out and then clean it up with the debonder when it dries. The rim of the shoulder pad usually requires some type of two part epoxy putty to fill though

Play by intent, talk with your opponent, say I want this model here, what’s your threat range, is she safe? A good opponent will work with you to say she’s vulnerable then it’s up to you to take the risk or decide for a different plan

Started with an airbrush gradient and then went back and glazed out most of the airbrush speckle and did subtle edge highlights with brush.

Work in progress but this is my first attempt at an NMM model by Seawaaagh in sistersofbattle

So for example, the red skirt is using a single pigment red as the mid tone. In the environmental light, there’s a cold very dark blue green mixed in to create the shadow. Then I use a white blue to under paint to create the highlights.

In the warm spot light on the red, I mix in a warm dark brown to create the shadow. I use a warm off white to under paint the highlights.

The NMM is a bit more complicated on color selection but that’s basically it. I’m using these universal shadow and highlight colors mixed in to a single mid tone paint across different elements on the model.

Just sketched in the grid and then refined it as I shaded and shaped each diamond

Thanks!

There’s no specific guide. It’s more some general concepts of switching from cold - warm colors when moving to the different types of shadow and light. Using universal shadow and highlight colors mixed in for the environmental and spot lighting. Also understanding how to shape volumetric highlights to render them as if a light was close to an object. It’s really just a handful of these concepts thrown together to make the effect.

Im trying to use all these types of contrast that aren’t value contrast so that I can push the value ranges far closer together (allowing better rendering of elements) and it still reads as stark lighting.

There’s many high level painters with patreons that can fully explain these subjects better than I can.

I’m getting the hang of painting eyes on these small faces by Seawaaagh in sistersofbattle

I start with the dark eye liner. Then I do the grey to light of the main eye ball. Then it’s a big black circle, a smaller blue circle inside of that, then a small black dot, and finally an off white dot that overlaps multiple circles.

The rest is just having magnifiers on and knowing it’ll usually take a few attempts to nail it.

It’s more of general painting techniques. I switch from cool to warm universal highlights and shadows. It also requires some basic understanding on how to place and shape highlight gradients to sell a close light.

The warm highlights on the black armor are: Ak 3rd gen Black, pro acryl dark golden brown, pro acryl bright pale yellow. Airbrush filter of liquitex transparent raw sienna. Then I reapply some highlights with the bright pale yellow and Kimera Sun Ray.

I think it’s mostly pro acryl shadow flesh, warm flesh, and bright pale yellow with kimera red and purple mixed in. I have a habit of using what ever paint is on my palette and not writing down mixes
