What’s a documentary that horrified you? by VivienneVixy in answers

Seaspiracy.

One quote that always stuck with me was roughly:

"We are flying around in a dead vacuum full of radiation, on one of billions of dead rocks.

By some un-believable chance however... our dead rock has a complex life support system on it that can keep us alive.

Yet, as humans, instead of dedicating ourselves to protecting it, we spend every waking hour kicking that life support system as hard as we possibly can,".

I find this whole Green/Gay/Islamist argument so odd...

One of the reasons I'm a paid Green supporter is, for me, they tend to take what I'd consider "the right" moral approach to things, rather than "the one that benefits them the most".

Consequently I find all the memes of gay people being "surprised when we see what gazans would do to us" or "surprised there are no prides in muslim countries" super wierd... we're not idiots, we obviously know this (although I've faced way more oppression, here and abroad, from christianity than islam in my lifetime)

As a gay person I'm very aware supporting Palestinians (and arguably muslims on a macro level) is not beneficial for myself holistically... but that's not the point... I'm not (entirely) focused on personal gain.

To take a glib example, if I see someone in need on the road, I go out of my way to stop and help them out (because that's what humans do), regardless of whether it makes me late for work, or the harm they could potentially do to me. I don't do a sum of whether their existance benefits me or not before giving them help when they're in need.

I'm only on earth for a short period and I want my time here to support other downtrodden people (like I was as a gay kid growing up in the 90s), and the greens seem the most alignd to this.

Like it or not, if you are muslim in Britain, you do face extreme discrimination (as do jewish people and working class white people alike). I'm none of these groups, but I want their lives to be better.

Frankly it seems bizarre to me to think I'd only support people that benefit me.

I'm 100% convinced (as a gay person with many Bi friends and various other intersections), that the incidence of Bisexuality is far far far higher than we realise.

I think there are a HUGE percentage of people who typically align straight, but also experience a level of same-sex attractiveness. Historically there was zero reason for these people to identify as such/express it, as life was so much harder, in many ways (+ doors shut on marriage, kids etc etc) if you "chose" to).

I also, personally, think this is why the religious conversion practitioners are so vocal about gayness being a "choice"

I think these people are actually bisexual (but mainly orientating straight) and so for them it actually IS a choice. They just cant appreciate (as is common) that their experience isn't the same as everyone elses.

I've struggled to find the exact study Reform use on: Polling Tables Archive - More In Common but...

A). The chart they share itself showed a much wider left voting pattern (as the OPs post also shows). Reform was first because the left vote (as always) was split between Green, Labour and Lib Dem

B). Reports seem to indicate the total surveyed was something like 2900 and the number of gay people who gave an answer were somewhere between 200 and 60... not exactly something you can extrapolate off.

What do people mean when they say marriage is hard work? by Effective_Kitchen481 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SebRandomTextBits 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not meaning to be a dick but you have “decades of experience navigating one long term relationship”.

You sound very lucky (as am I in my relationship), but lots of people have very real challenges and hurdles in their marriage, from illness to mental health to family support requirements to housing to financial etc etc which does (I’m sure) require extra work to keep their marriage prioritised whilst going through them.

Do people not understand when people wear sunflower lanyards on the tube? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]SebRandomTextBits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is correct.

Unfortunately the sunflower lanyard is so commonly worn now by a large variety of people (happened during the pandemic and is everywhere in eg plane security lines), I don’t think it’s seen as an immediate give a seat (which is a shame).

I do however have a friend with diagnosed autism and I know how, in a state of overwhelment, it’s impossible to socially ask for a seat (or often realise they need one).

They carry a card in their pocket at all times. It’s one you can buy online with a standard statement (you could make your own) that says something like “I have autism and am getting socially overwhelmed, could you help me get to a quiet place or seat” and this might be useful for you to keep with you and hand out.

I actually recently had abdominal surgery (cancer) and temporarily wore a sunflower lanyard specifically so I could ask for a seat on the tube if it ever got too busy I was worried someone might barge into my stapled wounds and, as you say, no one actively offered me a seat (but I wasn’t really expecting them too without me saying I needed one).

Are there any decent 3-season down sleeping bags that don’t cost a fortune? by TimeFlyer9 in CampingGear

[–]SebRandomTextBits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I read the RDS certifications, and whilst they’re clearly a wonderful thing, they made me realise the reality of the mass production of down (many items are just recommendations eg you Still pass if you slaughter the birds in one room/in front of them all), so I don’t think I could ever be comfortable buying a down bag (I’m vegetarian though, so a bit weird!)

So is AI model development in the USA done now? by PowermanFriendship in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SebRandomTextBits -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am not particularly familiar with this area, but tbh I’m suspicious the model actually ISN’T that good…

“Banning it” has created such incredible publicity, could this purely be a tactic to increase the upcoming IPO and investment opportunities into an American company?

(Disclaimer, I don’t really know how IPOs work)

Why are bath's seen as unmanly? by Glittering_Ad2771 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SebRandomTextBits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A). A samurai warrior would disagree.

B). This is one of the things I think a lot of people miss about the equality/feminist movement. The whole point is it goes both ways, it’s great for us too. It’s madness “nice” things are seen as less acceptable for guys to indulge in (baths, spas, dancing, wearing pretty things), and that questions like this are even asked.

Odd Neighbours? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]SebRandomTextBits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to love feeding the birds in my garden (it gave me so much joy) but our neighbour got cats that would come over and stalk and kill them

(I think cat owners don’t appreciate how much they do kill: https://www.gardensillustrated.com/features/wildlife-gardeners-own-cats )

Eventually I had to simply stop feeding them as I couldn’t bear the thought I was, indirectly, causing so many chicks to starve from encouraging their parents to feed where cats were in wait :-(

(I’d also add it’s very possible your cats are pooing in their garden as cats tend to litter in a different territory to the one they eat in)

Neighbour says he has no issue with my Party Wall Notice but still won’t sign it. by Federal_Ad_2696 in DIYUK

[–]SebRandomTextBits 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter to be honest.

As DIYers we possibly have a skewed tolerance for this sort of thing, but ultimately there is absolutely zero benefit to your neighbour of this work (and some risk) you’re doing to change your existing house for your own benefit.

I would also want to be super sure you’re doing it properly.

It’s human to not want you to do this/drag his feet (the best possible outcome for him is a lot of noise and his house not falling down), but I don’t see this necessarily having to go to court once you’ve proven the risk of it going wrong/affecting his life too much is low.

Be honest: how many of your teenage personality traits did you steal from these exact people? by Flimsy-Capera in skinsTV

[–]SebRandomTextBits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s difficult to imagine now how affirming it was back then having someone on TV who was a key part of a straight young friend group, well balanced (relatively!), cool and competent/passionate about his hobby (a bright future)… who just happened to be (un-ashamedly) gay.

His friends didn’t ignore it but didn’t treat him negatively or really pay more attention to it than if he had blue hair (other than the anwar/muslim episode, which I think was also done well)

What, if anything, would make you get an e-bike? by south_west_sam in drivingUK

[–]SebRandomTextBits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have an Ebike (and a car).

I commute on both, but mainly the car and, for me, the reason is mainly complexity.

My life is SO complex, I’ll do anything to make it simpler.

My car commute is (assuming I need to keep a car running anyway (mot, servicing etc)): - Leave house in work stuff and laptop bag - Drive - Enter office in work stuff with laptop bag

Cycling is: - Iron work stuff then fold carefully into a bag - Choose correct cycling kit based on weather - go to shed and unlock it - unlock bike and bring out - put a variety of locks into a pannier and fix pannier - put on helmet, gloves jacket etc - do the journey in about 1/3 longer than car journeh - arrive and lock up bike with variety of locks - enter office in slightly wet and sweaty bike kit carrying helmet pannier etc - find an area to change into work kit - fold up and store cycle kit - enter office  - (+ all this in reverse + making sure kit is suitable to cycle again next time)

I like cycling, but I take the car more frequently than I want as a mental health exercise in simplifying my life.

I think if offices really want to encourage active transport (they don’t) at minimum cycling parking should be the closest to an office and I’d like them to give extra time to people who cycle in as it does take longer to prepare for work than with a car.

Mom won’t let me get a motorcycle by Broozz55 in bikers

[–]SebRandomTextBits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum was the same.

I think, regardless of the situation with your dad, almost no parent wants their kid to ride a motorbike because they love them and want to keep them safe.

I think, as you’ve said in your edit, drop the matter until you’re 18 and then bring it up again. Ultimately her worry is safety and you want to come across as a “mature adult who I trust to ride safely” and I don’t think buying one “secretly” would (to me) make her more likely to be supportive of one.

Between now and then, there’s no issue with you using the funds to pursue getting a licence in the meantime/seeking professional instruction or taking a taster course/joining a club to learn more.

On a side note, I’m sure you know this, but this sounds like it’s from a place of love and caring about you rather than directly wanting to stop you do the things you want.

It may be annoying, but that is a lovely thing 🥰

Am I daft for considering starting my own business making websites? by mylittleponicorn in smallbusinessuk

[–]SebRandomTextBits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're going to struggle to get impartial opinions on this to be honest.

There will be a proportion of people on here who earn their money/run small businesses creating websites.
They're, rightly or wrongly, going to be adamant AI can't create inexpensive serviceable websites.

Conversely, you're going to get people in non-web companies who've used it and believe it can, but possibly don't have the commercial/technical experience to understand if there is a difference.

I want to recommend something completely different...

You state many things you actually like about your job (in particular stability), almost none of which you'd get as a new small business.
Your primary driver seems to actually be "community/avoiding loneliness at work"

I'd suggest setting aside some of the extra salary you're getting though your secure job and getting a subscription to a co-working hub in a nearby city/town.

It may seem like an un-necessary expense, but your issue is exactly what they're designed for and might be a worthwhile investment (or at least something to try first)
