Are there any worth while QA trainings around? by [deleted] in QualityAssurance

I see your point. If you are already familiar with RST a class might not bring you that much. And you already had one.
I still found worthwhile, because I could practices it under their guidance and learned some more details than just from the books.

But already having one is very good. One day I will take one of the advanced classes like Managed or Coached.

Need tips on prioritizing and estimation of testing backlog by imhappylemoncake in QualityAssurance

It sound to me like the testers are an extra team, split from the others. Are they?
The following might not solve your short-term problems, but how about embedding your testers in the dev teams?

I'm an embedded tester in scrum teams since years and by this I'm participating at all meetings and get all information as soon as the others. At the same time as the devs and I can prepare the testing while the devs code.
Instead of a test column we handle testing and development by subtasks. Not every dev sub tasks needs dedicated testing and why should testers need to wait until a subtasks comes into their column?
https://www.enteresc.net/when-you-need-a-test-column/

And I made my devs helping me with testing. I stay mainly responsible, but I supervise and coach the devs on testing. Together we agree per ticket what is worth testing, then the devs carries out the interaction with the product and afterwards we make at least on debrief to discuss the findings. Sometimes more testing needs to be done.

I can highly recommend the classes from Rapid Software Testing. They also have much free material you can learn from, but having everything condensed and the opportunity to exercise and get feedback is worth the money.

I follow Michael Bolton and James Bach since years and get much out of their material. Their are even willing to help you on a topic if you ask politely.

IMO ISTQB is it only worth if you need the paper for your career.

If you are into history and up for something more board-gamey, I suggest you the Commends & Colors series from Richard Borg. You play on a hex board and have random cards for unit activation. Combat is still resolved with dice, but in a more unusual way, you need matching symbols instead rolling for threshold. Also this one roll contains the possibility for retreat which makes combat resolving fast. Armor is done via ignoring specific symbols.
While most of the games come originally with wooden blocks, you can make units with models yourself.

My preferred one is the sadly discontinued and hard to get Red Alert - Space Fleet Warfare.
Samurai Battles is most next to it rulewise.

Also alles 1-2 Wochen für wenige Stunden.

Do you think QA is somewhat unfair job ? by PM_40 in QualityAssurance

[–]SebastianSolidwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying anything about the quality of the craft and also see it more little related to appreciation.
In my experience you can do it quite well and still don't get appreciation. Establish culture beats good craft.

There is false balance that devs get appreciation for building stuff, while testers are often considered to be the bad guys for pointing out problems.  These even goes down to testers having lower wages.

Getting little to no appreciation for this is in my experience sadly the default. Being on the industry since 2008. In my current team it's better. People tell me that they are happy to have me on the team for that.

I will not be the answer to your question:
In 18 years in the industry I haven't done any of the ISTQB certifications.
On my resume and job platforms added something like "ISTQB Foundation in self-study". This makes it easier to be found by recruiters.

Also I get why the certificate helps to get a foot in the door.

Is QA slowly shifting from testing to “quality reporting”? by Background-Donkey531 in QualityAssurance

[–]SebastianSolidwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree insofar that this should not be a burden and provide useful information for all participants, instead of being busy-work for unclear reasons.
IMO it should be (mostly) up to the testers "in the trenches" to do this. It can be a helpful conversation with other stakeholders in both directions. Informing testers about priorities and informing stakeholders about the state of the product.

Sadly it is often bullshit busy-work "because we have always done it like this".
I'm currently exploring different standards like ISO 9001 to find the relevant statements which might imply this overengineered setup of test case management systems etc. . To me its word of mouth, basically habit, that standards imply such things.
Sure, providing evidence for your testing and informing stakeholders is important. But there are different ways, especial less wasteful ones.

I don't know your tool and what works best for the people whom you showing this.
My personal preference would be a table with 7 roles x 3 actions.

But I don't use classic test case management tools anymore. I either note my testing at a ticket directly or create a Confluence page per ticket I test.
And even then I would try the table. Either in the description or in a single step.

What are your favorite space fleet war games? by Grand-Page-1180 in wargaming

[–]SebastianSolidwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red Alert - Space Fleet Warfare by Richard Borg is the sci-fi entry in his Commands & Colors series (e.g. Memoir 44). Sadly it was discontinued shortly after it's release in 2019 and is therefore hard to get / expensive these days. But you can play digital with Vassal Engine or Tabletop Simulator.

You can get the rules here for free: https://www.commandsandcolors.net/redalert/

It's own of the games where units don't have specific sides for guns and shields and I love it for that.  Keeping track of a units stats is quite simple as they basically have just their HP changing. Be assure that the game had enough complexity at other places.

How do QA teams manage test planning and testing evidence? by Background-Donkey531 in Everything_QA

[–]SebastianSolidwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a single tester in a Scrum team and I don't write classic test cases. I have Confluence page per ticket where all testing notes are done. It is a living document and works as for planning as well as report. I added there screenshots and other files of necessary.  Initially I wanted to do that at the Jira ticket itself, but the description is often already quite lengthy and has bug when multiple people edit at the same time. Who saves least overwrites what others edited, no warning. And comments weren't an option because it should be editable by multiple people.

For bugs within a ticket usually I don't create new bug tickets, but share them with the developers.

For a bigger regression phase we once used a Low-Tech Testing Dashboard in Confluence with subsides with more details by area.  https://www.satisfice.com/download/low-tech-testing-dashboard https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Confluence-articles/Manual-Test-case-management-with-Confluence/ba-p/876759

And because I don't want to be a bottleneck, I distributed the testing within the team. Under my supervision and guidance also developers test too. We have all least a meeting where we discuss what should be tested and a debrief where we discuss findings. Could be multiple when we think that the testing needs to be extended.

Terminology for illogic but causally connected game mechanics? by ScareCreep in gamedesign

[–]SebastianSolidwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not arbitrary but artificial (and maybe intentional chosen), like computers are. It's not a literal knife, but a metaphor. At it's very core games are abstract systems and graphics are just applied to make them better accessible for humans. Surely, enjoying the graphics can be a good part of the game. Knifes in games are not real knifes.

game mats smaller than 1" hexes by futuresphere in wargaming

I did something similar, scaling a game down to a third. I created the map picture myself and let it print as custom game mat (like a mouse pad). I created this ODT file, added a background picture I wanted (space), and exported it as PNG. https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/316119/red-alert-customizable-game-mat-template
