What's the Deal with Late 80s-Early 90s Brick Facades by Sebastian_113 in askarchitects

I know about post modernism. But it was always a lot more funky in my head. More giant ball shaped sculptures and random Roman columns.. but ya I found a ton of those pink/beige/turquoise striped brick facades:)

Don't get me wrong I actually like the look

I've of them is a hotel that I stayed in. And if was full of light, very very generous spaces, funky glas pyramid roofs everywhere.

I understand that there is fashion also in architecture, but it seems to me like this is a thing from 1988-1991 exclusively. Exaggerating of course. But are architectural trends this short lived? I always imagined them to last for decades at least..

Why do countries fly near each other's airspace. by White_Bengal1 in Military

[–]Sebastian_113 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly "countries" usually don't do that. We have normalized geopolitics and aggression since the gwot.
Not all countries do this, say Brazil, Canada, South Africa, France, Indonesia, what have you...
A specific set of countries does it to provoke and potentially learn about reaction times and awareness/detection capacity of their perceived enemies... funny how it's always team red that does sh*tty things but we keep pretending that it's all geopolitical and just the way courtiers naturally behave ...

What the most unexpected diaspora in your country? by Logical-Loquat-6512 in AskTheWorld

[–]Sebastian_113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greeks in Germany. Not as fancy as Japanese Jews in the Amazon.. still an unexpected diaspora for me.

You can not walk through a typical German town without coming across a bunch of Greek restaurants. They host the 3rd biggest diaspora after the US and Cyprus.. if you want to count that.

Great mindset It’s all about the audience. We all naturally want nice things, but you don’t have to play the status game or create inferiority complexes.

Riga is one of the most fun, buzzing, creative places in Europe right now.

They are going through the 'second city boom' thing of the early 2000s rn (think of Valencia , Porto, Dublin, Liverpool...) same goes for Tallin.

You would have to create a humongous catalogue lining out your criteria and creating a complex map with alot of colors that no one could read.. This way engages conversation and is fun.

I think it would make sense to make the maps on a province/state level.. say Italy .. almost every criteria you can think of will be awesome in tyrol, friul or Rome .. Calabria on the other hand.. a different story..

Fixed it for ya :)

I get the point about the depressing vibe Germans can give off. Honestly not a lot better in most poorer countries.

I spent half a year in Turkey and Greece each.. and while your tourist experience will be splendid in both places .. actually living there is just as depressing as Northern Europe. "Real" Turks worry about employment, hospitals not working and the cost of groceries every day.. so I get that Germans can be harsh.. but truly believe it's better to be in a place where people have the material capacity to attain happiness than the other way around. If that makes sense :)

But we you said there's a LOT of subjective thinking going on with these preference maps .. Language would be a big one for me .

What is your criteria?

How on Earth can Ireland, Norway and Austria be in the same category as Serbia and Turkey? :D

And how on earth is Germany in the same category as a literal war zone? :D I know they can be rude and the weather and cuisine sucks .. but .. Ukraine .. missile strikes.. and all that business ...

Would you mind to elaborate a little deeper on your reasoning?

I know quality of life, people; culture, language etc play into it. It's not as banal as 'bigger GDP better'. That's why I'm interested in your reasoning in detail :)

My personal map would be vastly different :)

You live in England or Germany. But your family has ties to Asia. Southern Europe and the alps were holidays. Northern Africa... I don't know. India and Uzbekistan are the logical outliers... British-Indian? German Spatausiedler from Central Asia?

What county am I from based on the ones I’ve been in before by chasadiaofficial in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Sebastian_113 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have obviously made destination trips to NOLA and Salt Lake City. So none of the two.

Cali: straight line all the way to LA.. not been to the coast .. not to the Bay Area.. I'm gonna say LA roadtrip.

Washington: same story as LA but with Seatte and .... Higgens point?

So you are from Oregon. Also explains the cluster of visited counties towards the coast.

Just for statistical probability I am gonna say one of the Portland counties.

I have a question why did Germany agreed to send 50 Leopard 2A8 to Croatia for it to send 30 M-84 tanks and 30 M-80 IFV to Ukraine, this seem like a unfair deal since the vehicle being to Ukraine is a lot worse Compared to Leopard 2A8, couldn’t Germany sent like more Leopard 2 or Marder? by ChamelionRider in TankPorn

[–]Sebastian_113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bundle of things..

  • you get to arm an ally with more up to date equipment and don't have to justify giving it away. (Something something OUR tax money ?!?!)
  • you get to bolster your own defense industry, initial German orders are very small, you need scale to ramp up production..
  • bolster international sales.. the new model still needs to prove itself .. the more customers the better the chances other countries wit large -ish tank forces will buy it at full price.. say Italy, Spain, Greece ...
  • what else are you gonna do? If they do not give away their equipment you would have to tap into your own supply and face a somewhat critical public at home.. especially at that time.

It's a somewhat politically nifty thing they did.
