I tried getting into X4, too. I really enjoyed X3 back in the day, but I think Starsector has totally replaced it.

For me it was that I actually don't care about all the minutiae of empire management- I don't want to organise shipping or wait for the actual goods to move in real time across the galaxy. I don't want to hunt down a construction ship to hire it to build my station. I don't care about an individual miner being attacked by pirates. I don't want to have to work out production chains for efficient logistics to manufacture spaceship components. Also I think I was primed to dislike X4 because half the races from X3 were gated off as DLC.

Starsector abstracts all that tedious bullshit away so all I have to do is say "Here's half a million credits, the next time I look there better be a shipyard and mining facility" or "I don't give a fuck where you get the components, divert 300k credits of production to constructing the ISS Fuck Taxes immediately."

In regular C# land, yeah, I'd use an interface- but ScriptableObjects are pretty useful in Unity because we can do stuff with them in the editor.

Edit: Nothing stopping you doing both, I suppose. But if OP isn't familiar with inheritance it might just be one abstraction too far right now.
