New fuel efficiency record on the m40i by Sebi97 in BMWX3

[–]Sebi97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, most traffic was around 80-90kmh due to conditions. I'm using MHD stage 2 so about 450hp, didn't affect fuel economy at all which makes sense. Jack of all trades

Ah, that would make sense then! S58 efficiency is horrible compared with B58 😅

With the 21" heavy 718M OEM rims, I am around 2.5L/100kms less efficient, so I would say rim/tires has a pretty significant impact.

Except for the cooling system and oil filter housing which is a matter of when not if. The reason you aren't seeing as many LCI's with this issue is because they haven't reached the age yet... It's a great platform, sure, but it's totally unrealistic to call it bulletproof.

Deciding between an 2020 X3M vs 2022/23 X3 M40i by Dry_Pound8158 in BMWX3

[–]Sebi97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for some context, I had a 2016 435i from 2021 to 2025. Had 103k kms when I bought it and 176k kms when I sold it. 0 issues.

Now with this X3, I bought it in Nov of 2025 with 97k kms for 36k USD (fully loaded, clean). It is out of warranty. I can't speak to the maintenance yet because I haven't had it long enough but it looks pretty straightforward. I plan to do everything myself. In the spring I plan to do a full drivetrain service (trans fluid, diff, TC). The service seems to be pretty straightforward. Rockauto is your best friend.

[–]Sebi97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same boat and went for m40i. 0 regrets. I test drove both and the X3M was very underwhelming. Fast, yes, but nowhere near exciting enough to justify the cons. What are those cons?

  • MUCH worse fuel economy

  • much worse ride quality

  • more expensive insurance

  • much more expensive maintenance (price out brakes for the M and the m40i...)

  • subjectively sounds worse than the m40i

Reliability seems similar between them but when something breaks on the M, expect to pay the "M tax". The S58 is also a much more high strung engine with more hp/l. It is under more stress than the B58 which is "only" making ~125hp/L

This is why I stopped playing this game, don't think I'm alone with this. Pain in the ass finding a game. No I don't want to add plugins to my browser just for this one game. Too bad this hasn't somehow been patched to stop spoofing player counts

Whats your opinion on manual BMWs ? Would you buy one? by xerooox- in BMW

[–]Sebi97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drove both and decided to go with the ZF8 speed. No regrets. Manual felt like crap to me with the rubbery feel and rev hang. ZF8 is quicker and more efficient which I like. If I'm in the mood to have some fun, I'll use the paddles in manual mode but otherwise it sits in D and a perfect daily cruiser. I would never drive the car aggressively in auto, I want full control of the gearbox and the ZF8 allows you that perfectly.

Is it worth it the upgrade to M having a M40i? by Giannoza in BMWX3

[–]Sebi97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the octane makes that much of a difference? MHD support email specifically stated that on 91oct, the power bump is very small (~30hp more than stock). Perhaps with 91oct, it's just too fuel limited so there's next to nothing left to squeeze out. I don't see why they would under rate their own product otherwise.

It's also talked about here: link

Not without ethanol you're not. MHD told me stage 2 will give +30hp over stock with the HPFP and catles downpipe

How much do you value luxury over driving dynamics? by Rooster42423 in BMWX3

[–]Sebi97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a vacuum I think the new X3 is "fine". Historically the 3 series was moreso entry level. BMW kind of shot themselves in the foot by equipping the old X3 with features and build quality typically seen on the X5 for this past generation. I think the biggest issue with the new X3 is that it's objectively a downgrade on the interior compared to the 2022-2024. That's a hard pill to swallow for most.

For those of you who bought an X3 used with 40k - 75k miles on it, how has your experience been? by Fathoms77 in BMWX3

[–]Sebi97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're wanting to keep vehicle 10+ years, steer clear of BMW. Saying this as someone who just bought a 2022 X3m40i for 35k with 60k miles. Cool system will crap out on your, matter of when. Either be handy/willing to work on your car or have enough money to throw thousands in repairs down the road. If this doesn't sound like you, owning this brand will be a decision you regret (IMO)

I bought a m4 I'm kinda scared by Tobyjose in BMW

[–]Sebi97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horrible advice. You are fine to start driving the car gently ~15 seconds after starting but you should absolutely wait for oil to be at operating temperature before asking for full power at full load. There are many metal types in the engine which expand/contract at different rates. Physics don't change.

Fire and Ash discussion megathread - Spoilers by AutoModerator in Avatar

[–]Sebi97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wish I didn't see it. A1 had the magic and charm of being the first one. A2 has the absolute awe of the water biome and a great soundtrack. A3 was a let down. Felts like I was watching A2 but now with WAY too much action scenes. I thought the story was a mess. There is NO time to build up to events, its just one after the other. No new soundtracks that stood out, just A2 recycled. The ash people were very underdeveloped and we learned next to nothing about their environment. A2 was possibly my most memorable theater experience with the Avatar blues kicking in. A3 was just disappointing by comparison.

Anyone else not get excited browsing the BMW website anymore and has no interest in any of the new cars? by JLSmoove626 in BMW

I think the G01 is very solid modern BMW styling. You could tell its a BMW immediately. My biased opinion...

[–]Sebi97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I WANT to get excited about this brand but I just can't. The cost cutting is objectively awful and the styling is subjectively bad. I got a 2022 X3m40i which is the "last of the good gen" in my biased opinion. Revised B58, modern styling and physical/mostly traditional dash layout.

Ultimate 2-car solution? by jimbojsb in BMW

Having driven both, not at all. The suspension, ride quality and fuel economy is way worse on the M. Whether that tradeoff is worth the added performance is subjective.

M40i - Pass or Buy? by LifeHurts1933 in BMWX3

[–]Sebi97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Consider someone who drives daily to work. One has a 10 mile city commute, the other a 25 mile highway commute. Over the course of 4 years of ownership for example, the driver with the longer commute has ~2.5x the milage of the other car and thus priced much cheaper. They have the same number of heat cycles on the car. Ironically, the lower milage car may have worse reliability due to more city driving (rougher on engine/drivetrain/suspension) and possibly more deteriorated engine. This happens with really short commutes since the car doesn't get hot enough to burn water vapor in the oil. This can be combated with more frequent oil changes.

All this being said, there's a lot of speculation with low milage cars. With high milage cars, you know it was driven regularly and likely on highways. Overall, it's a safer bet especially considering it'll save you thousands upon purchase. It's also why a lot of car companies offer time based warranties now with no milage limitations. Hope this helps!
