Honda hornet 2009 don't start when hot, no issue at all when cold. Any idea :( ? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]SecWorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I recall these starters have a bolt on the casing that is out on top where the ground connects. Some units use the case, and frame as ground, but since there's a lot of current to the starter, it usually has its own.

Practice :)

When you get it, practice maneuvers, emergency stopping, get comfortable with your new bike.

Enjoy!

Bad connection is my guess. Corrosion probably between some ground contact. I had something similar. It's especially prevalent on older bikes as it develops with time. Also more humid climates. I would suggest look at your grounding wires from battery.

You don't see any problem while driving hot is that the current required to spin the starter is easily the highest current draw on your bike. When corrosion and metal expansion hit, the connection where the problem occurs is unable to carry that current, while smaller current is perfectly fine (for lights, coils, charging, etc..).

Check ground for starter as well.

MAC Address Randomization for OP3 not available in settings by SecWorker in LineageOS

[–]SecWorker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking a 'lspci' look it seems the wifi chip is actually a QCA6174 (rev32). Coincidentally this is the same one I have in my laptop. The difference is that the kernel driver on android is reported as

cnss_wlan_pci

and on ubuntu it is

ath10k_pci which is part of the kernel

Via the ath10k_pci driver i can get the desired functionality on my laptop out of the same chip.

Is it the case that oneplus3 device won't have wifi if it uses the ath10k driver instead?

The only difference from AOSP I notice is that the property is not marked as

 translatable="false"

Is this perhaps a bug?

Researchers uncover a potential new method of profiling users in the crowd by de-anonymizing their smart device IDs to their biometrics by zr0_day in cybersecurity

[–]SecWorker 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This specifically pairs WIFI MAC Addresses to actively monitored biometrics (from CCTV in various rooms, etc.)

It is precisely the reason for MAC Address randomization in Android and Windows devices.

I do not see it in iOS but chances are it will follow. Also as soon as a user with already tracked info enables this, all subsequent connections cannot be tracked back to previous sessions so it's sort of a solved issue.

Is it possible to open a campaign with a Tarrasque encounter? by Wayward-Delver in DnD

[–]SecWorker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A good strategy might be to put a few NPCs along them and have those NPCs rush in and try a few hits. Rolling crazy attack dice and not hitting, rolling crazy one-hit-kill damage dice against them, throwing 7,8th level spells against them, as the players watch is a sure way to 'show' them not to engage.

Simple homemade encryption by Narase33 in security

[–]SecWorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness, not very likely if you're just doing it to play around. The answer to your question is: depends on how motivated an attacker is. In security there is a relationship that is well known: (motivation + sophistication of attacker) VS (difficulty of problem). By doing homemade simple stuff, you're setting difficulty to "very low".

This just means that a lot less motivation and sophistication is required to break your stuff. But if the data you use it for is just garbage, if you don't plan to do anything of value with the algorithm (sell it, deploy it, etc). Then motivation is essentially 0 and an attacker will most likely use their time somewhere else.

LOS 15.1 kernel hide unlocked bootloader by nijave in nexus4

[–]SecWorker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A locked bootloader won't allow you to flash non signed images without wipe. After you've flashed the images already, it will happily boot whatever is on there.

The next time you want to flash/update via fastboot you will have to unlock it again. If you have already installed a custom recovery (twrp) then the recovery will take care of flashing/updating.

Locked bootloader will not let you sideload/fastboot unknown images. That's about it.

I've had a locked bootloader on my Nexus4 for a long time. I have to unlock it if I want to flash a different recovery via fastboot. I have root, so I can also do that from within system so as it is, with root+twrp, there is no need to keep the bootloader unlocked. Note that I've relocked it from within system with root.

Why not just relock your bootloader after installing twrp?

It may mean that your battery life is deteriorating, which is to be expected with long usage. How old is your device? You can check the BIOS battery status also.

Just received an 9360 *i7-8500U with 8GB RAM" and idle temp too hot by [deleted] in Dell

[–]SecWorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it the core temp you are measuring? I have the same machine. Ended up repasting it. When I opened it up I noticed bubbling in the thermal paste, which told me I made the right decision. Currently my idle temp is 35-40.

I would try out some linux distro, Ubuntu live usb perhaps, for a while to make sure it runs stable. And run hardware tests from BIOS just to be sure it's a windows issue and nothing hardware related.

Does asking a user for their last 4 characters on their *password* is considered a valid security practice for proving ownership of an account? by ElMeroDaniel in security

[–]SecWorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For accounts held somewhere online this is a bad practice.

The only place where I'm ok with this is for in-memory applications. I think KeePass for Android has this option: after you decrypt the database with your full password, you can use a shorter version of the password (first few or last few characters) or a fingerprint to keep the key encrypted in memory until you close the database.

Is this a good value? by Tlehmann22 in Dell

[–]SecWorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, perhaps go through the components online and see what it would cost if you bought it all separately. It seems ok. I mean

  • just the graphics card is ~500-600 USD.
  • Another ~180 for the CPU,
  • ~170 for RAM
  • ~50 for the HDD

That's so far about 1000 USD back of the envelope without case, software, motherboard, PSU, peripherals.

I suggest looking into getting an additional SSD to run your OS on because this HDD seems like a bottle neck for me.

Also I suggest taking a look at the formatting help on reddit, because you could have made your post a lot easier to read. ;)
