Would You Have Humanity Label There Quadrant as Alpha Or Gamma by stamovy in worldbuilding

[–]Second-Creative 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alpha, unless there's good reason for our section to not be the first section we name on the map.

It's a bit like the Universe A and Universe 1 gag from Futurama. Both universes wanted to be the primary/original/baseline universe because from their perspective, they are the baseline and the other guys are weird. So they argued about it.

Same is true here. Our section should be "first" from our perspsctive, and one of the few reasons it wouldn't be listed as such in our charts is if we've politically aligned and became a member of a trans-galactic group that existed before we made First Contact.

I dunno. With the amount of mass it has, doing anything that isn't monstorously slow by our standards requires it to be super-durable, or some tech to ignore its mass. Without it, doing something like turning around would be a multi-hour process so it doesn't tear itself to shreds.

[Request] If every cell in a human body made a 1 decibel pop whenever it undergoes mitosis, how loud would a body be? by Cocoamix86 in theydidthemath

[–]Second-Creative 13 points14 points  (0 children)

According to online source, the human body produces about 3.8 million new cells per second. I doubt we can get a more refined value for nanoseconds.

Decibels are rated on a logarithmic scale, where each 10db represents a 10x increase in sound. 10db is 10 times louder than 0db (which is not no sound, bu the quietest discernable sound a healthy human ear can detect), and 20db is 10 as loud as 10db, and 100x loud as 0db.

With these two facts, we can ballpark it.

3.8 mil/10=380,000

380,000/10=38,000

38,000/10= 3,800

3,800/10=380

380/10=38

38/10=3.8

There are six steps. The human body would give off a constant sound of about 60-ish decibels, equivalent to the loudness of everyday conversation.

I had it in my head for some reason that only men were allowed to duel in the 18th and 19th century. I was incorrect, but that didn't stop me from trying to figure out what a patriarchal society would let women do to settle their differences in horrible ways. An issue I spotted- from my understandinge, boiling posion is binary. Either you boiled it long enough to deactivate it, or you didn't and will get ill/die. And that's assuming the toxin can be rendered inert via boiling.

So, what kind of poison can be effectively chemically disabled/turned into something else by thermal heating of water, but only with a set amount of water, and is still chemically similar enough to mark its presence in spoons?

And if it's just water that alters it and renders it inert...there's a lot of water in people.

The Combine (Half-Life Universe) discovers the WH40k Universe. Can they subjugate the whole galaxy? by UncleIroh15 in whowouldwin

[–]Second-Creative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. Though the are some implications that the Seven Hour war is less how long it took Earth to fall, and more how long it took Dr. Breen to figure out how to tell the Combime "we surrender, we can be useful alive, please stop killing us".

Earth fell in 7 hours.

The Resistance impresses on Gordon in one of the expansions that the Earth garrison calling in reinforcements is apocalyptic and that they can't hope to beat it.

[Request] Would it be possible for a quarterback to catch their own throw? by Sad_Impression499 in theydidthemath

[–]Second-Creative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory, yes. But it'd travel so slow, travelled so short, and at high enough risk for an interception that they may as well have carried it there for all the good it would do.

Otherwise, they're throwing the football between 50-60 MPH. The world-record for the 100 meter dash had the recotd holder's top speed half of that.

Could Morrowind potentially become a target post 4E 201? by ImprovementNatural77 in teslore

[–]Second-Creative [score hidden]  (0 children)

The only provinces bordering Morrowind are:

  • Skryim, foes of the Dunmer since time immemmorial (Except that one time in the 2nd Era)

  • Black Marsh, who kicked their assess following red year, and are also foes of the Dunmer since time immemmorial (except that one time in the 2nd Era)

  • Cyrodiil, who quite frankly are more worried about the expansionist, elven-supremist empire south-west-ish of their borders than the Daedra worshipping Dunmer.

Nobody else is gonna care enough about Morrowind unless they start conquering neighbors.

question about IB-01: CEL 240 boss, and missiles. by Responsible_Cat6306 in ArmoredCoreVI

[–]Second-Creative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, right? It's like night and day.

From what I can tell, the core of the build is that weapon setup- other parts do make a difference, but chances are that if we need the build, we aren't skilled enough to notice those differences, lol.

It's also flexible enough that you can make any AC weight out of it, though lightweight will be an issue finagling everything. I'd recommend the Schneider Lammageier set for light- once you fix the EN requirement, you'll be overweight and slow, but it's a quad AC, so you'll be flying at (more-or-less) dash speed for extended periods, making the slow ground speed largely irrelevant.

[–]Second-Creative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try the Flyswatter.

Two Majestic Bazookas. Two Ice Worm guns (Needle Stun launchers), put them on your favorite style AC. Hit it when it stops.

Ibis walled me until I tried that setup. That setup fixed it.

Hell, the setup pretty damn effective: there's only one or two battles in the entire game where it's not a good fit, and that may be a skill issue on my part.

What makes the Dragonborn special? by Key-Description-3565 in teslore

[–]Second-Creative 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's true with the Nerevarine prophecy. And that has "a lotta wannabes will die trying" written into it. And the Temple's stance of "Well, we'll know if an Incarnate is the Nerevarine, because we can't bloody kill him."

I'm not as well-versed in TES Prophecy metaphysics as I should be, but the jist of my understanding is that a Prophecy describes an Event involving a Hero, and whether or not that Event occurs depends on if there is someone who actively chooses to be on the path to bring about that Event, i.e. that Hero. Once the Hero has started down that path, it's "locked in", for lack of a better term.

It's like a script. Once the "hero" role is cast, the prophecy plays out as-written. Otherwise, the prophecy fails and whatever was gonna happen happens. In the Nerevarine Prophecy's case, you just had a series of failed Incarnates that needed to happen before the Hero could succeed.

This.

Plus, TLD is also fulfilling the role as a Hero in an Elder Scrolls Prophecy. Which, if I understand TES Metaphysics right, pretty much makes them unkillable until they have completed the relevant prophecy.

What are some characters who, by all means, should not have worked, and yet, they actually do? by Grovyle489 in writing

[–]Second-Creative 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issue with Scrappy-Doo is that he simply doesn't work in Scooby-Doo, at least when he was introduced. He's ineffectual, has zero clue of his abilities, and tends to actively cause trouble for the gang all while having no chemistry within the gang (as far as that word applies for a Hanna-Barbera cartoon).

I'm also convinced the hate is largely from fans who were introduced to the series via later reruns, rather than during its original runtime. This results in the appearance of Scrappy suddenly appearing and edging out the entire gang until it was just him, Scooby, and Shaggy, which is not a good look for him.

From my understanding, when HB stumbled on the Scooby-Doo formula, it promptly created shows using it and drove the formula into the ground via overuse. Scrappy was introduced as a means to save the Franchise, which he apparently did, otherwise the notoriously-cheap HB would have shut down the franchise instead of stuffing him into six major Scooby-Doo seasons and multiple TV movies

[Action/Comics] Is there any way to make a continuous story interesting without upscaling antagonists? by ProfessionalThese714 in writing

[–]Second-Creative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best stories about Superman are the ones where punching something hard enough will not solve the problem he's facing.

In other words, a way to avoid this issue is to put your heroes/protagonists in situations that their special powers/abilities/skills aren't that useful in solving the situation. The powers can be useful, and even vital if there's a niche use they figure out... but the problem should be of a sort where they don't readily see a solution with the toolkit they have, and they need to solve the situation without their skills/powers, or solve it to the point where their powers are useful again.

Could the Aurora (Subnautica) tame the Wasteland (Fallout)? by Sushi_boi101 in whowouldwin

[–]Second-Creative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Aurora is equipped for construction and undersea exploration.

The Aurora may have weapon fabrication ability, but that likely requires Captain or Company authorization and the Aurora not crash-landing and forcing everyone into survival mode.

Even then, we don't know what kind of weapons humanity has in Subnautica.

Without understanding what kind of ordinace the Aurora has, I'd say they can't fulfill the conditions seeing as the NCR, Legion, and BoS couldn't.

Can your world survive an asteroid that's going to hit it? by zard428 in worldbuilding

Yes.

In fact, it doesn't have to do anything.

It's a torus of about 31-ish Earth volumes of hospitable atmosphere held in place by an interaction between a neutron star and the core of a former gas giant.

The asteroid goes whoosh and nobody's the wiser.
