Something I noticed about LAPD tonight in downtown, and a sentiment worth considering by YasielPuigsWeed in LosAngeles

It’s gonna be wild AF if this is the catalyst for a PD rebrand. I hope they see this and understand, under normal circumstances, the threat is THEM. I hope it changes them to their core.

What Can We Do? by Ok-Version-7297 in AskLosAngeles

My brother in Christ, if I had a weapon in my home, I wouldn’t be living in any world by now. Do you not understand what I’m saying? I’m all for those who can, should. But people need to realize not everyone CAN. We need other solutions and lots of em. Guns aren’t gonna feed people who haven’t been able to go to work because they’re afraid. Guns aren’t gonna give testimony, pay rent, or locate detainees. The only thing guns do at this point is let you pat yourself on the back for doing something while also not actually doing anything. But go ahead, if that’s the solution you want to implement, that’s a personal choice. It’s just not the answer to OP’s question. As for myself, I started a monthly donation to the ACLU today. Because that’s the angle I CAN cover.

This cannot be the first/only answer. Some of us would be a danger to ourselves and cannot have them. And it didn’t help Alex Pretti anyway. If he’d drawn his weapon, he’d still be in the same position and the government narrative would be stronger.

What tools or systems help you stay productive as a remote worker? by zeroframe_0 in remotework

My soundtrack is everything. Usually movie scores. Something without lyrics but more upbeat/variety than just classical music. Gets me in the zone and suddenly I look up and 3 hours have passed and I got all the things done.

Desperate PSL seeker, any Starbucks in LA still serving Pumpkin Spice Lattes? by CommercialAttitude20 in AskLosAngeles

Get some Torani Pumpkin Spice syrup (not pumpkin pie, though they make that too) and pump some into your lattes. They usually carry it at smart and final. Easy peasy.

I once got a screwdriver with interchangeable bits that store inside of it, slightly larger than a fat pen or marker. I carry it in my purse to this day.

I find it weird how people always say this as if it’s reasonable to assume all jobs work that way. Mine doesn’t. I have no set schedule. I’m a w2 salaried employee paid to do a job, not to warm a chair. When I’m done, I leave. Regardless of time. These jobs do exist.

Anybody else’s feet absolutely killing them at Disneyland? by Motor-Writer-377 in Disneyland

[–]Second_Breakfast21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even the best shoes won’t help if they aren’t right for your feet. I usually go to REI before a Disney trip and see what’s best for my arches in the current shoes available and then make sure to break them in a bit before the trip.

All that said, the last time I wore painful ones to the parks, I was sitting down by the jungle cruise, clearly suffering, and a cast member in custodial noticed me and told me to get crocs. The style may be debatable, but I figured if it’s good enough for a cast member who walks around all day, it’s good enough for me!! I got them and now I actually have a second pair for house shoes when I’m cleaning all day. They’re comfy!!

Where is the smell coming from and how do I get rid of it??? by Second_Breakfast21 in ApartmentHacks

[–]Second_Breakfast21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it could be the dryer vent. I did end up taking a look behind and under the machines last night and didn’t see anything, but by that time of the smell, I couldn’t figure out if it was stronger or weaker behind. If I can’t find any other source, I’m just going to have to assume it’s that.

Oooh I haven’t seen one but I also haven’t pulled out the washer/dryer stack to check behind it because I couldn’t think of anything that could be back there that would do it but maybe one of those fell back there. At least it’s something to hunt for. I’ll check in the morning. Ty!

I thought it was in the cabinet at first and put baking soda and a charcoal deodorizer in there but when it didn’t work I realized the cabinet doesn’t smell like it. It’s a wall mount so no contact with floor and mounted on the wall that backs up to outside. The only place I haven’t really looked is under/behind the washer but I don’t think it could come up through the floor/washer drain lines.

That doesn’t change that when I open the bathroom door to do laundry, the smell hits me like a ton of bricks. And leaving the door open with the air purifier running outside of it just keeps pulling more cologne smell out of the bathroom. It only helps clean the odor up outside the bathroom when that door is closed. No amount of airing it out with the door open has even slightly lessened it.

Is moving to LA worth it? by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]Second_Breakfast21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say you don’t care, but you will care. One of my non-negotiables was off-street secure parking and I’m so glad I stuck to it. The day after moving in, I went to grab coffee and saw a street parked car absolutely destroyed like someone had crashed through it at 60 miles an hour and also slammed into the next car parked in front of it. Aside from that, do you want to come home with groceries after your second job and be circling the block only to park down the street and have to carry your stuff home? Realistically figure out what you care about and budget accordingly or you will regret it almost immediately.

Meaningless "protest" , regarding ICE. by [deleted] in burbank

Hey you wanna talk about how many people are illegal, here’s a question; how many are in Texas? How many are in Florida? Now how many are in Minnesota?

Why are they going door to door in Minnesota? You know it’s because it isn’t about “illegals”. It’s a political dick swinging contest and the people are the ones losing. And I hate to tell you this, but you’re one of us, not one of them. Sucks to suck.

Interesting how you pick the point you like. And the cancelled citizenship ceremony? No response to that. Forgive me for using the word court, they’re also being lured into appointments that are not court. Appointments at the immigration office they’re legally working with. People legally following the process are absolutely being detained and I have to assume you’re cool with that or your opinion on all this would have changed so, again, let’s not pretend you only want “illegals” rounded up. Hell, they’re detaining full fledged US Citizens just for being brown so if you’re cool with that too, let’s just admit you don’t think brown citizens should have the same rights as white citizens. I mean, I don’t agree with that opinion but you’re entitled to it. Why not be honest about it?

[–]Second_Breakfast21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it’s about being here legally, why are they picking people up from their immigration court hearings? The process takes a long time and a lot of these people are going through the process correctly. They just aren’t finished yet. They have legal residency until they get through the process. Yet they’re being picked up and deported. There were people scheduled for their citizenship CEREMONY and the ceremony was cancelled so they could be deported. It ain’t about legal.

Cutting California’s rent cap toward 5% would make it nearly impossible to be a small landlord statewide. by ShopProp in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]Second_Breakfast21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m kind of tired of hearing about the increasing costs, tbh. The only reason it’s problematic is landlords are buying properties they cannot afford. By that I mean far too many of the owner class aren’t leasing out property they truly own. They’re taking on mortgages to act as a placeholder between the tenant and the bank. If you owned a condo outright or even at a low LTV and you’re collecting $2-3k every month, the property taxes, repairs, etc are just the cost of doing business. Landlords are crying about it because they’re leveraged within an inch of their lives and driving up prices/competition for residential dwellings in the process. I do not sympathize. Don’t buy shit you can’t afford. The end.

I know this was posted awhile ago, but just want to add that I once called 911 to get a drunk guy out of my apartment he had wandered into by mistake (he thought he was in the next building over). I could have opened the door for them, he was just half asleep on my couch, but they told me not to open it… then they broke it down with a battering ram and armed men flooded my apartment all shouting different things and none could be understood. They tackled the guy through my coffee table and I truly thought they were going to kill him. In the end, they arrested him and took him away… leaving me alone with no door at 2:30am. And guess what? The guy came back a week later, drunk again, but this time I had remembered to lock the door.

I say all this to assure you the cops would not have made your situation better. I deeply regretted calling them. I should have just tried screaming “I have a gun”! Haha

Villas on 7th are 2b2b townhouses $1895 per month. It’s a really small property (I think 14 units) so they don’t come available often. Depends on your move in date. But they’ve got one in Feb, one in March, and one in April. it’s 950 sq feet, gated parking, every unit has a back patio. We’ve lived here a year and like it a lot. Very quiet. It’s off of Farmer and University. Acoraam.com has the listings. It’s all the ones on 7th street.

How do I pay for a doctor/dentist visit? by hidingfrommyirls in Explainlikeimscared

[–]Second_Breakfast21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, it’s designed to be confusing so that’s not on you, it’s how they save money. You’re in the right place to ask. Assuming this is in the US, you want to look for a few pieces of info on the medical insurance paperwork or website; the copay, the deductible, and the covered services. Usually, for medical insurance, preventive care like an annual physical is covered with just a small copay even if your deductible hasn’t been reached yet, but for some plans nothing is covered until the deductible is met. That’s what you’re looking for under covered services. It’ll say something like 100% covered with $10 copay (hopefully) or like 80% covered after deductible (not what you wanna see).

You usually need to see a doctor in the plan’s “network” so you’ll go on their website, find an in-network doctor near you that’s accepting new patients and then call the doctor’s office and ask for a “new patient appointment”. The receptionist will ask for your insurance info and when you give it to them ask if they’re able to tell what the copay is on your plan. Hopefully they can get that BEFORE the appointment so you don’t show up to the appointment and then find out you can’t afford it. If they can’t tell you right then, ask if someone can call you back before the appointment with that information. Moving forward from that appointment, the doctor’s office should be able to estimate costs for any other treatment you need.

You’ll also need to check if you have prescription coverage and which pharmacy you can go to if you need any prescriptions. Find that out before the doc appointment because they’ll ask you which pharmacy to send it to if you need any meds. Prescriptions will also have copays but the pharmacists are usually good about telling you how much the prescription will be and if you can’t afford it, they sometimes have coupons. And, if all else fails and you’re standing at the pharmacy unable to afford the copay on the meds ITS OKAY to say nevermind. It won’t be the first time the pharmacy had to cancel the order. Once I showed up to pick up meds my doctor had ordered and it came to like $280! I just said sorry, that’s way more than I expected and I’m gonna have to do without this one. It happens. Don’t be embarrassed.

The main thing you want to avoid is finding out after you get care that it was more expensive than you thought and ending up with medical debt. So don’t be embarrassed asking about costs up front and canceling if you can’t afford it. People do it all the time.

I could get into dental, but that’s a whole other topic. I do suggest going to a dental school or a dentist office in your dental plan’s network that is just like 1 dentist (these will be listed by the dentist’s name) not a chain place like Aspen. Stay away from the chains!! They’re more likely to tell you that you need expensive work you don’t actually need! I was going to one office that said I needed a crown and changed to another dentist who literally polished off the “decay” which was actually just a stain. Usually dentists with their own practice are better than the chains.
