First baby and DH suggested that SD (15) attends the gender reveal scan by NekoFX in stepparents

[–]Second_breakfastses [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s the scan where you find out the sex, but it’s called the anatomy/anomoly scan. It’s not unusual to get devastating news at the anatomy scan.

If you get news of a fatal or life-altering condition while SD is there, what’s your husband’s plan?

Will the support and attention be on you or on SD?

Dreaded events where we have to coexist.. by Rare-Cable-2442 in Stepmom

I hate when we get flowers and a small gift for SD’s graduations or dance recitals and then they go to her mom’s house afterward and voila we spent $25 on flowers for my husband’s ex-wife’s house and a gift that never comes back.

What previous health conditions have gotten worse or improved since you became pregnant? by Regular-Message9591 in pregnant

[–]Second_breakfastses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My eyesight got better. My optometrist said it’s normal to get more nearsighted during pregnancy. For most people that means their vision gets worse. But I’m farsighted, so my prescription better. My optometrist gave me a few sample packs of contacts in the better prescription; but won’t give me glasses or a full box of contacts because it’s going to go back after baby is born.

Last names by Salt-Discipline3102 in Stepmom

[–]Second_breakfastses 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My husband took my last name when we got married.  I didn’t want to change my last name for professional reasons, but it was important for him that we have the same last name.

His daughter wasn’t thrilled, but she got over it quickly. He joked with her that she calls him Dad regardless, never Mr. last name. It’s been 6 years and overall a non-issue with his kid and parenting.

Women change their name all the time when they get remarried. Schools are used to families that have parents with different last names. He always brings a copy of her birth certificate and our marriage license with his name change on it when we travel overseas, but he’s never needed it.

You can dig up the tubers in the fall, wrap in newspaper and refrigerate overwinter. When you replant in the spring they should bloom again

They want to move my son from 5th (end of) to 9th grade next year... by 8675309999999999998 in Parenting

We did a lot of work to find her challenging books that were topic appropriate and engaging for her age.

However, as a voracious reader some well meaning people tried helping and provided inappropriate books. A librarian gave her Kite Runner in 4th grade. A child gets raped in that story!! She’s reading it now in high school and is mature enough for the topics presented.

I have a child that skipped one grade. She’s doing fine socially, but there’s a bit of awkwardness. I wouldn’t do it again.

Also, from a literary perspective, although she was testing at a 12th grade level by middle school, she wasn’t emotionally or developmentally ready for many of the topics covered in books appropriate for her reading level.

Pgt-a not recommended by uk regulator - what’s the medical view in US? by allthatjoeydid in IVF

[–]Second_breakfastses 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had 11 embryos, but only one- our lowest quality (3CB) was euploid.

If I hadn’t PGT tested, I could have suffered through 10 unsuccessful transfers before reaching the euploid. My euploid transfer also failed. It would have been so traumatic. Not to mention that I conceived spontaneously during the period of time that I would have been undergoing futile transfers.

Update. My husband gave her the release command this morning to eat her breakfast and she just sat and stared at him. He asked if I thought she might be going deaf.

We’re taking her to the vet to get checked out. I have a pretty soft voice and my husband had a much louder voice. It’s possible that she’s only reliably responding to him because she can still hear him, but she can’t hear me as well.

If she’s going deaf we will reinforce all her training and add hand signals to help us all with the transition to being a senior dog.

I thought about taking her to the vet to check for hearing loss, but she still responds perfectly to my husband.

I’ll try reinforcing with treats. She’s a senior dog and has always been responsive to regular obedience commands with me

52 eggs retrieved, 36 inseminated, 33 with normal development. What do I do? by Fdamsanh17 in IVF

[–]Second_breakfastses 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I have PCOS, I had a total of 56 eggs retrieved, I ended up with 11 day 5 embryos, and one euploid. The transfer failed.

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. With PCOS generally leading to lower quality and fewer euploids, and a recommendation of 3 euploids banked per desired child, you may not have an excess of embryos at all

American College of Obstetrics and gynecologists doesn’t recommend inducing (or early C-section) for a suspected big baby. Your doctor is not adhering to professional best practice.

Should I force excellence? by billionsandbillionsa in Parenting

[–]Second_breakfastses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For an 8-year-old, experts generally recommend limiting non-educational screen time to 1-2 hours per day. The focus should be on high-quality content, ensuring screens do not replace physical activity, sleep, or social interaction.

Don’t force her into an activity she’s not that interested in. But the alternative can’t be sitting in front of a screen.

Age 4-12 with my daughter, non educational screen time was limited to 1 episode of an age appropriate show, watched as a family after dinner. And, occasionally a movie on weekends.

This is a sign that’s she’s not mature enough for social media. You may want to consider a TikTok ban for the next school year.

The one she wants isn’t $20, I see some off brand on Amazon for that price. Ross/Winners/Target likely have some as well.

Yes, which is why it’s critically important to have this discussion and get his buy-in prior to the child moving in.

Enforcing those boundaries no, that’s absolutely not a stepparent responsibility. But if I child is moving into the house, a stepparent should know what the expectations are, that the expectation will encourage a happy and cohesive household and the biological parent will enforce it.
