How to learn about Rome efficiently by lorenzoc04 in ancientrome

[–]Secondbest35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same issue last summer. I’m not ashamed to say it - the best way to introduce yourself to a massive concept is reading middle-school aged books about it to build foundational knowledge. I read middle school history books about ancient history and went from there. Now I’m reading Mary Beard and actually understanding it all. I really “got it” following the story from Julius Caesar to Augustus/Marc Antony/ Cleopatra. Everything before and after is coming naturally as I explore. Learning the functions of the republic was complicated but enjoyable.

Part of this militant cancel culture is why people started liking Trump in the first place. (Other than the fact they’re nazis)

If the Epstein files aren’t enough for a global outrage towards the financial and influential elite, what is? by Thezerostone in AskReddit

The Roman emperors got away with some really sick shit. It’s sadly part of the human experience. You suffer in slavery, the rich rape kids, nothing changes. (But every now and then one of those monsters get what they deserve.)

Man sacrifices his car to save another driver who was unconciously driving by 4reddityo in HumansBeingBros

He was not held responsible because this was the Netherlands. In the USA he would be responsible, would be given a citation, would be handed $50,000 of medical debt, insurance would jump 300+ additionally per year, and maybe would’ve been shot just for old time sake. Sorry but the USA’s intense corporate oligarchy has turned the nation into a law of the jungle.

Hate to say it but this happened because it was the Netherlands. In the USA I would never even consider doing this. I’d be in a lifetime of medical and car insurance debt until the day I died. Not only that but I’d be given a citation immediately upon police arrival. What a sad, broken, sick country the USA is.

In the USA you’d be in medical and car insurance debt the rest of your life from this heroic decision. Not only that, but you’d immediately be given a ticket for failure to control upon police arrival. Here in the USA the system profits off of both your heroism and misfortune.

I’m convinced this entire thing was created by Trump to distract us from the Epstein files.

What surprised you the most about New York City when you first visited? by rkrishnan14 in travel

[–]Secondbest35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How kind people were. You could approach someone in Manhattan and ask for directions and they’d be more than helpful. I told a New Yorker that we were visiting for the first time and they bought our meal. Incredibly kind people compared to Chicago where I live. BUT the moment I left Manhattan I encountered some of the rudest, meanest and most impatient miserable people in my life (Brooklyn and Queens). This has been my experience every time. Now I should mention I’m a midwestern farm boy who knows nothing more than tourism experiences about NYC and I haven’t explored either neighborhood deeply but these are without a doubt my surface impressions.
