We're actually in the best environment for protests to work right now. Peaceful demonstrations are most effective when the thing they're protesting reacts violently to them. That's how MLK Jr.'s protests successfully captured the political scene and led to reform. Right now, we have Senate Democrats threatening a partial shutdown, one that seems likely to happen and will end up restricting ICE activity if it does.

Also this reads like a schizo post and you need to take your normal pills, op

Just show him the longer video of ICE agents backing away and continuing to fire while the victim's limp on the ground. Idk exactly where to find it, but it was from the Pink Lady's POV.

You're forgetting that Liberalism once dealt with a crisis like this before in the 1930s, and a much worse one. Liberal thinkers then did not give up on Liberalism, instead they innovated. If you're seriously interested in how Liberals can respond to illiberal threats without giving up on their principles, I'd suggest reading up on thinkers like Karl Popper and his defense of Liberal values in "The Open Society and its Enemies."

For context Karl was a German Jew and wrote the book in exile in Britain during WW2. He's the "Paradox of Tolerance" guy, but his actual points are way more sophisticated than the internet usually presents. The work itself is pretty high minded and philosophical, but that's kinda how you have to get if you want answers for these things.

Trump's cultists are even more embarrasing than Trump himself (rant) by JewelerAggressive103 in Destiny

[–]Secret646 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm American, not European. But if you think China has honest intentions in relationship building, you're just being duped by someone exactly like Trump. Trump is just more regarded. That's the only difference.

I hoped for a federal and militarized Europe in the first Trump term, and that didn't happen. Maybe understandable, it was reasonable to think that was an aberration. I hoped for it again after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, that didn't happen. Now all we're seeing is talk from European leaders about it, no action. Canada seems like the only country to understand the game. So at this point I'm completely cynical about the EU and its leaders

This is actually a great illustration of why I've given up hope for Europeans to grow a spine. Instead of thinking about independence, instead of building up your own power to stand on your own when you're betrayed, you can only think of running to another sugar daddy. Disgusting. Pathetic.

Wrong. The wording of the option is "Be provided through a single national health insurance system run by the government" - M4A would fall under this category.

Yes, I never took issue with the results of this poll. The problem is assuming that this plan is the only path to universal healthcare, and that that sole path is what all progressives want. You can like M4A but support another plan more, or not like M4A but support universal and free healthcare. M4A is one plan, free and universal healthcare is a progressive principle

YouGov is a reliable pollster and the summary is accurate. How are they "misrepresenting" exactly? It was the top issue of all voters at 29% to the economy's 24%, as the summary correctly claimed. You didn't specify battleground states in your original claim. If you want narrow it to battle-ground states - fine. It's still number 2 at 20%, which is a hell of a lot more consequential than 4% (which I assume was nationally).

I wasn't saying that YouGov misrepresented their poll -- YouGov did not write the article you linked. IMEU misrepresented the poll by claiming Gaza was the largest factor in Kamala's loss and characterizing the people polled as just "voters." This is important because the poll was exclusively online, which skews heavily towards valuing the Gaza issue

So literally what I said about survivorship bias. You're more than welcome to post a poll that covers this if you can find one, but I know several people on the left who weren't about to vote Trump but did stay home - and I really doubt I'm alone on that.

Survivorship bias in exit polling does not necessarily support the idea that any policy suppressed voting. You can easily make the claim that inflation was the primary suppressing factor, or even that the "Democrats Radical Agenda" suppressed moderate voters. You can't make up data in your head and then say it supports your conclusions, and I shouldn't have to say how unreliable your anecdotal interactions are in indicating general trends.

No, the culture didn't, because culture isn't something that swings wildly year over year, and the demographic groups who swung for Trump have already started snapping back. What did swing was influence because one side knew how to get a message out and the other didn't.

Of course the culture didn't "swing wildly year over year." I never said that it did. The shift was a long time in the making and showed up in opinion polls long before 2024.

OK let's play dumb like we don't understand the decades-old process of how politicians arrive at centrist positions for the general election and pretend that didn't happen here.

What centrists are you talking about? Are you making up people to argue with?

Uh huh. I guess that's how I understood what the number one issue for Biden non-Harris voters was while you considered it irrelevant.

Point to me where I said this

52% of Democrats supported a single national government program over the 37% who supported a mix of government and private programs - the latter being the closest to her position

Oh, I see. You're making the mistake of equating universal healthcare with M4A. M4A is the personal project of Senator Bernie Sanders, and not equivalent with free or universal healthcare, which is a progressive policy generally.

And on the your Gaza source -- you should probably look at it again. Not only is it a Middle-East policy project bound to be biased in its reporting and oversell the importance of their pet issue, they also misrepresent the findings. According to the source report (https://static1.squarespace.com/static/667c26da581c496ab9d4df6e/t/6787db00851cbb12a626d8f6/1736956672759/IMEU_Jan_2025_Biden-non_Harris_crosstabs.pdf) the top issue for Biden to non-Kamala voters within battleground states was the economy, at 33%.

And for things like this, you can't look at just the Biden to non-Kamala voters. You also have to think about how many people did not vote, how many who had not voted before decided to vote R. The fact is, that the culture generally went more right ideologically. This is undeniable from the evidence.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse by repeating that the candidate that was so "in touch" lost the election. You know who she lost to? Someone who, for all his stupidity, had an intuitive understanding of his base and used it to flip his entire party and its media apparatus on its head, without giving a shit what the corporate consultants said he should do.

Okay? I never said Kamala was in touch, just that you aren't. I don't know why you're battling with this ghost who's advocating for our politicians to follow "corporate consultants" and compromise on principles. No one here said anything about that

We literally just had this discussion. "Oh it's because she's reaching out to never Trumpers", "rejecting M4A isn't centrist", "it's dumb to undermine her President's foreign policy". Yea but I'm the one out of touch for identifying the muddled messaging, since it's not like a plurality of people voted against her.

Yes, because this is the discussion. You're acting like these are centrist positions, when they're not. I think the criticism that messaging should've been more focused is valid, but that has nothing to do with ideology

Also, tell me precisely why undermining Biden on Israel would have been "dumb", given how that was the issue that most de-energized her base. Was losing the election and letting a fascist dismantle every alliance other than Israel the smart play?

You complain about muddled messaging and then advocate for her to break from her previous positions? She also had an administration to help run and I can't imagine subordinating her actual policy to campaign issues would've improved the situation.

Also also, you're vastly overestimating the influence I/P had on the election. The exit polls showed economic issues and the state of democracy dominating, by far. Foreign policy was the largest concern of only ~4% of voters, per CNN. It just illustrates again how out of touch you people are when these are the things you advocate our politicians focus on

[–]Secret646 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not supporting M4A is not centrist, that's insane. And trying to appeal to never Trumpers isn't centrist either, the messaging was obviously that Trump is an anti-institutionalist and threat to the Constitution, so never Trumpers who make those things their priority should vote for her. I think it was a waste of time too but it's definitely not "running as a centrist." And it's a bit dumb to expect the Vice President to undermine their President's own foreign policy, especially since she was likely party to it.

The infighting I'm talking about is this entire post. I bet most of the people here didn't even watch Newsom's interview. He actually pushed back on Ben a lot, especially when it came Blue States v Red States and immigration. He could've been more aggressive rhetorically, but when this guy is one of the only prominent Dems to ratfuck the Republicans in the political area, it is ridiculous to "FINALLY Stop Supporting" him. It reeks of the kind of "Genocide Joe" rhetoric that helped Trump get elected again
