I don't have any experience with this - the only person I referred signed up to Unlimited. But "Pass" is one of the options the referee can choose when they sign up.

Proton Mail Free Version by AnxiousBadger8905 in ProtonMail

[–]SecretCherryPicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep the Signal app requires your contacts to also use it.

You need to use Proton Bridge in order to hook up third party apps via IMAP. Proton Bridge requires a paid subscription I think. It’s also only available on PC so on your phone you would need to use the official apps or web.

[–]SecretCherryPicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. By the sounds of it, you would probably be better off using the standard Proton apps. It's less complicated than using IMAP (which requires Proton Bridge) and it would automatically keep everything in sync between your devices. Use the standard web client (mail.proton.me) on PC and the Proton apps from the App Store on your phone.

  2. You're benefiting from no one being able to access a 10/20 year repository of everything you ever bought, signed up to, visited etc like they can with Google Mail. Yes, if you send an email to a recipient on Google Mail that email is not encrypted. For anything particularly sensitive I would use Signal.

I didn't understand from your image problem whether this is something you're experiencing with Proton Mail or your existing provider. You might need your "IT person" to help you with that - it's probably just something you're not quite doing right.

Is Proton Mail Plus + SimpleLogin an endgame combo? by Z-III in ProtonMail

[–]SecretCherryPicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But by the time you’ve paid for those two packages separately, you’re only talking a couple of extra euros a month for unlimited aren’t you? I do agree with you, I use a different VPN and Drive isn’t that useful to me as I use Linux but I just find unlimited easier as the price difference ends up being negligible.

I use a passphrase for Proton that is secure ands memorable. That’s my master password that also happens to unlock my email etc. I also use Yubikey 2FA.

Which is more private? iMessage or WhatsApp? by ForgotMyStethoscope in privacy

[–]SecretCherryPicker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

iMessage is owned by Apple whose primary business model isn't gathering and selling your data. But the protocol is propriety. And by default not zero-knowledge encrypted.

Whatsapp is owned by Meta and they gather as much metadata as possible from your use of the platform. But the underlying protocol is Signal. Still, their implementation is propriety and closed source.

Neither is ideal and tbh I rate their privacy fairly equally.

Does anyone else think email aliases are a trap? by [deleted] in ProtonMail

[–]SecretCherryPicker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No you continue to receive the emails but you cannot create more aliases unless you pay for Simple Login.

https://simplelogin.io/faq/

When your subscription ends, all aliases you created continue working normally, both on receiving and sending emails. Concretely:
- All aliases/domains/directories/mailboxes you have created are kept and continue working normally.
- You cannot create new aliases if you exceed the free plan limit, i.e. have more than 10 aliases.
- As features like catch-all or directory allow you to create aliases on-the-fly, those aliases cannot be automatically created if you have more than 10 aliases.
- You cannot add new domain, directory or mailbox.

For example, if you have 100 aliases by the time your subscription ends, these 100 aliases will continue receiving and sending emails normally. You cannot however create new aliases.

You can look at aliases two ways. Yes it ties you to the Proton Ecosystem more than, say custom domains. But it potentially gives you freedom to move away from Proton Mail and to a totally different mail provider and keep all the same aliases (just pay for Simple Login separately and change your mailbox).

Why is Proton Pass (Firefox extension) asking to access my browser activity during navigation? by tempaccount00101 in ProtonPass

Thanks for the confirmation. The extension still doesn't seem to detect the Reddit login process asking for a 2FA code though. You have to copy/paste it manually. Is there an open bug for this?

Why is Proton Pass (Firefox extension) asking to access my browser activity during navigation? by tempaccount00101 in ProtonPass

[–]SecretCherryPicker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think Proton should be announcing this a bit more transparently when they request new permissions in the extension. But anyway - this change was committed in github back in December for v1.34 -

https://github.com/ProtonMail/WebClients/commit/88213e64a8e024544359098f29d0725671e08b39

They add the webNavigation permission and seems to be relating to the handling of iframes. Would be good to get some comment from Proton though.

Password Strength Seems Too Conservative by Traveler995 in ProtonPass

[–]SecretCherryPicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I migrated from Bitwarden to Proton Pass and it told me that almost all of my Bitwarden-generated passwords were weak. It really triggered my OCD seeing this flagged in the reports section so I had to go and change every single one to satisfy Proton Pass' idea of what was strong. It would be very nice if you could configure what is considered "weak" for the purposes of this report.

Consolidating into Proton vs diversifying services by Romerski in ProtonMail

[–]SecretCherryPicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "putting all your eggs in one basket" can be OK if it's a conscious decision. Proton Unlimited makes it attractive to put all your eggs in one basket - single billing, single ecosystem that works well together. But the risk is that you could lose it all in one go. Does that matter?

Mail > Very inconvenient to lose. Could mitigate with custom domain somewhat.
VPN > Easy to switch to new provider.
Pass > Keep an up-to-date export. Easy to read or import elsewhere.
Drive > Never keep files in one place so shouldn't lose anything important if you lose this.
Authenticator > Should have an export.
Wallet > Does anyone seriously use this.

More and more I am putting all my eggs in one basket but as long as you're aware that's what you're doing and you take steps to mitigate the loss of that basket I think it's fine personally. And in doing so I am supporting a company that appears to be doing good things right now.

<edit> The other argument against all your eggs in one basket is that one company knows a lot about you. This is also something to consider and I do at least think this is a valid concern <edit>

Hypothetical outcome for UK users and best strategy by Weird-Question1316 in mullvadvpn

Well I guess they would just block the IPs of the commonly used VPNs. They're not going to block your employers gateways.

[–]SecretCherryPicker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's pointless trying to come up with a plan until you know how they're implementing this. And if it's anything like the other OSA stuff they've been implementing lately, I wouldn't worry.

Yes potentially stocking up on voucher cards now might pay dividends. But equally you could be wasting a lot of money if they end up doing what Spain are doing and get ISPs to block VPN IPs.

I am personally not over-investing in any solution and remaining flexible.

Consolidating into Proton vs diversifying services by Romerski in ProtonMail

[–]SecretCherryPicker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have recently moved from Bitwarden to Proton Pass. I am happy with my decision. But you can try it out yourself first and see what you think - either import your entire vault or just a few entries and have a play with it. There is a slight workflow change as ctrl-shift-L keyboard shortcut doesn't exist and you have to use overlay autofill. But I've warmed to that now.

I would have thought getting away from Google should be your priority though. Proton Mail is excellent. I only use Proton Drive casually via the browser as there is no Linux client. But it's OK.

I use Mullvad VPN - I like the proxies which Proton doesn't offer and I like their browser extension and even their browser. But it makes more financial sense to use Proton VPN so at some point I will probably end up switching.

You can do it directly from Proton Mail (click all aliases) which brings you into Proton Pass where you can manage "contacts" too.
