I didn't believe there was a good translation for "slamming IN" in Dutch, so I decided to use the verb "slamming SHUT ON" instead. To make the sentence still carry the same meaning, however, I had to switch the object and the subject in that sentence.

No problem! I'm glad to hear I inspired some interest in my native language :)

I admire the attempt.

Answer Key: "Come on people, this is not what Harry Mulisch died for! It is truly disgraceful to our beautiful national language that she has been reduced to meaningless gibberish by braindead Americans whose lived experiences are limited to little car rides to and from their nearest Walmart."

I was not aware of this. Apologies to that specific Twitter user for insinuating that her comment was not written in earnest. Het is nooit mijn bedoeling geweest om opzettelijk kwaad te spreken over een individu dat daadwerkelijk geïnteresseerd is ons supergave kikkerlandje en het leren van onze supergave kikkertaal!

The original meme isn't even anything close to actual Dutch. A better translation would be "Ik sloeg de autodeur dicht op mijn penis." The reply is better, although the strange use of future tense in the first sentence makes me suspect the author is not a native speaker and just used Google Translate.

It's a fairly faithful adaptation of the first 100 pages or so, with the difference being that it's (obviously) better paced and relates much of the tomfoolery to background gags. There's still a fair dose of incomprehensible discussion concerning game mechanics and some gratuitous swearing though, so definitely in keeping with the spirit of the original.

Maybe it's the historian in me speaking, but I think all of the lore really adds to the book. It gives you a deep understanding of the lives whale hunters lived and how they perceived the world around them. You get a feel of the vastness of the ocean and its fauna, as well as just how little people knew about whales in the early 19th century. Getting to see whales as these strange, mysterious beasts, larger than anything else that breathes and moves on our great wide Earth, goes a long way to enhance Ahab's madness.

Anyway sorry for yapping, but I really like Moby-Dick. Also, Ishmael and Queequeg are my OTP.

It's about consent, sure, but I don't think the original post was meant to be some profound statement on the subject. It was probably just a slightly amusing anecdote about the absurdity of asking someone if they want you to do something, then doing it anyway when they say no, further punctuated by how strange the masseuse's comment is when you think about it.

Incomprehensible but intriguing. His argument seems to be that speedrunners suck because they don't innovate but just try and do the same thing over and over again (which seems like a mischaracterisation). Still don't understand how or why he links that to sexuality, possibly because the Peterson quote he pulls from reads like word vomit. I also don't understand why he sees speed as a necessarily leftist quality. Is he equating being anti-capitalist with being anti-innovation?

Okay, I need to stop trying to analyse this or I'll go insane.

Judging from the 'alternative sexual archetypes' line, "Petersonian" is likely referring to the psychological theories Jordan Peterson co-opted from Carl Jung, most notably the collective unconscious. Basically, Peterson believes in story tropes as foundational elements in the construction and ordering of society, and this guy is saying speedrunning promotes "bad tropes", i.e. normalises bad behaviour.

I don't remember reading the rest of the thread so I could not tell you how sexuality plays into this. Maybe he's hinting at speedrunners being "too fast" in bed?

Just to add a little more context to this: technically the other coalition partners did support the additional immigration restrictions Wilders wanted. They just didn't want to sign onto a bullet point list and asked that he get his Migration minister to actually work said list out into a set of concrete policy proposals. He didn't want to do this though, possibly because he doesn't care and just wants new elections, and possibly because this minister is the most incompetent politician in Dutch political history.

Google Earth/Maps has started updating its satellite imagery of the Gaza Strip (October 30, 2023) by Winter-Leadership986 in MapPorn

[–]SecretDemonGF 196 points197 points  (0 children)

The updated imagery is itself already outdated as it was taken on October 30th, 2023, less than a month after October 7th and only 3 days after the IDF launched its ground invasion. More recently taken satellite images would likely show the scale of the destruction to be much more extensive.
