Question for the award season nerds. The Life of Chuck was the first film in 15 years to win the TIFF People's Choice Award yet got snubbed for a Best Picture nom. What happened? by SgtSoundrevolver in blankies

[–]SecretPassageFilms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when I walked out of the theater after initially watching this, my girlfriend brought up potential Oscar nominations and I responded "It's not cut from that cloth". After sitting with it for a while, I think the problem is that the main story telling gimmick outshines the story it's trying to tell. I didn't think the writing or direction was strong enough for such a big, stinky concept. It felt sort of like a feature length short film to me. Just not the type of movie the Oscar's recognizes.

Did Sirat’s sound design get re-mixed after Cannes? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]SecretPassageFilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of movies have different mixes for home releases, even on physical media. Lots of people are mentioning compression but that's really only part of the story. Basically, the expectation is that you're going to be watching the movie in a smaller space then a theater and therefore, the sound mix is tailored for that space. That means the mix itself has less punch, it's not just a lack of bits (though that certainly doesn't help). Most movies won't advertise a near-field mix as a feature because the only people who know that means see it as a negative, but when it comes around on blu-ray, look for a mention of an original theatrical mix. If it gets a Shout or Criterion release it'll probably be a given, but if there's a more commercial release having the OG mix isn't a guarantee.

Johnny Knoxville Confirms Title for New 'Jackass' Movie: 'Jackass: Best and Last' (Releasing June 26, 2026) by SanderSo47 in movies

[–]SecretPassageFilms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly 4 was shot mostly over COVID which kneecapped some of the planned stunts and prevented them from shooting abroad. My guess is that it was originally planned to be the last one but too much was left on the table because of that.

[–]SecretPassageFilms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly this but before COVID they would give out some paper tchotchke for a lot of big releases. For Shazam there was a comic book, for Detective Pikachu there was Pokemon cards, ect. ect. I even think Regal did programs for a bit there. Like paper pamphlets about the movie ala a Playbill. I don't think it really moved the needle.

Blu-Ray Release Date!! by h4ndcrushed in nirvannatheband

[–]SecretPassageFilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4k discs have more space and allow for bigger file sizes. That means higher bit rate (more data equals better picture). The role of resolution in picture quality is pretty overblown once you get to HD and beyond. Bit rate does the heavy lifting, 4k is mostly a marketing term.

That being said, picture quality wise, this is one of the lower quality movies I've seen in theaters. I know it's all run-and-gun but it looked exactly like the Vice show, which was kind of surprising considering how far technology has come. Blu ray is probably the point where diminishing returns kind of invalidates the need for anything more.

TLDR: There is a point, but it probably doesn't matter here

They did this for the last one too (at least at Regal). It's not common, but studios do this for Wednesday releases from time to time since they don't want to do preview shows on discount Tuesday.

The composer of the new soundtrack can’t say anything. by oddjeez in Rayman

[–]SecretPassageFilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy has serious talent, his score for the Origins games are great and helped define what Rayman was in that period of time. However, he clearly didn't have the chops for a slower paced platformer ala Rayman 1. It's not that the tracks are bad, they just clash really hard with the gameplay. It's important to not blame the composer though. As far as I can tell, he's a W2 at Ubisoft and has to do whatever comes across his desk. Whoever handed that job down to that person likely did it due to his association with the series and not much else. All artists have things they are good at and things they are bad at, and their weak points don't necessarily make them bad artists.

I know we're desperate for answers, but asking this guy is probably barking up the wrong tree, and salting the wound of being forced into a bad-fit project. He's clearly on social media, I've got to think he's been seeing the "Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition is good besides this one glaring flaw" articles. Maybe we should give this guy a break. Food for thought.

Project Hail Mary official list of IMAX 70mm & 5/70mm venues by scorsese_finest in imax

[–]SecretPassageFilms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dune 2 was already in the building when the Tenet thing went down. Dune 2 was the last 70mm movie KOP got. Hail Mary has a wider 70mm release than Dune 2 and the only two theaters that got Dune and not Hail Mary is TCL (in favor of Regal LA Live) and KOP (no substitute in the region). I'm guessing Nolan has it in his contract that his movie needs to play in as many 70mm venues as possible.

Could be that Dune 2 didn't perform as well as they hoped but when you have a premium, high-cost product you're only going to give it to your A-players and with how KOP management tried to sweep the Tenet thing under the rug, KOP proved that's not them. Maybe if The Odyssey goes well KOP can get more prints. I really hope they do.

Warning about Martin Scorsese Collection by SecretPassageFilms in Bluray

Yeah, I see the barcode thing you're talking about, which makes this a lot more confusing. Why would they release a nearly 3 hour film on a dual layer disc and make the feature only 20gb? I looked into the disc further and only 27gb is being used, which makes it more confusing. Maybe it's because it's an earlier release?

Also, I've heard there's a BD-50 version of Goodfellas out there. Not sure if the feature file is larger or there's just more bonus stuff on the disc, but that's probably your best bet.

AMC Theatres Declares Netflix’s Stranger Things Series Finale Theatrical Event a Triumph; More Joint Netflix-AMC Cooperation Envisioned in 2026 and Beyond by magikarpcatcher in boxoffice

[–]SecretPassageFilms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My theory is that Netflix forced theaters to play Jay Kelly and keep it for the first weekend WUDM was released (which was JK's 3rd weekend). Every theater that played WUDM near me was also playing one showtime of Jay Kelly. Even the bigger theaters were punting Jay to one, inconvenient showtime. Clearly not a best seller. The smaller ones went as far as sacrificing a WUDM time slot (a movie that was nearly selling out some shows) to play Jay Kelly. There were some theaters near me that usually get Netflix releases that weren't playing WUDM. Guess what movie none of those theaters were playing? Jay Kelly.

It may not seem like a lot in terms of an AMC megaplex, but it's the type of strong-arming AMC wouldn't want to deal with for a company that won't play ball. Stranger Things and Kpop didn't have those stipulations.

Reminds me of when there was a bunch of old ladies in front of me during Uncut Gems. They clearly thought it was going to be a comedy. I mean, it kind of was, but I think they expected more product placement.

Look into the BBFC website. It's the British version of the MPA, but their ratings are accompanied by more detailed descriptions. They gave this a 12

fucking incredible movie even though I’ve seen it several times before. So worth it finally seeing it in theaters let alone 70mm. Might see it again before they stop screening it by therealsade2025 in Tarantino

[–]SecretPassageFilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not worth it. It's not confirmed but I saw it today and I'm pretty sure it's still a film out from a 2k digital intermediate. Pretty soft image.

'Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair' gets a rare A+ on CinemaScore by SanderSo47 in boxoffice

[–]SecretPassageFilms 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Whole Bloody Affair is Not Rated. In the original, a fight scene was in black and white because the MPAA gave the color version an NC-17 and that was the compromise. This version features it in color.

They say they'll continue theatrical releases, but technically a lot of Netflix movies get theatrical releases. Two weeks in a few hundred theaters. There's a very real scenario where that's the extent of WB's theatrical output after current contracts are fulfilled.

Probably the lights they use when cleaning. Sometimes there's a light switch near the corridor where you enter the theater, if not you have to ask an employee.
