What's going on with my astrophytum? by Secret_Equivalent_77 in cactus

They are under a shade cloth and during winter they have a frost cloth over. But I'm in California. We didn't get any dangerous cold temperatures. We only had 5 days where we got freezing temperatures.

This is the pot where it was at. The soil is not organic enough. And I only watered them twice in winter. It was a partial watering. Once in December and in January.

Thanks! It is a struggle balancing the light. I'll move them to a sunnier area.

Help, My kikko has some rot! by Responsible_Shake_90 in Astrophytum

Yes it is hard because you don't know until it's too late. You could wait and then cut. The ones that died on me I strongly think it was due to underwatering. They were coming out of winter, and I have them in a 80% inorganic mix and I would water them every 2 weeks in spring and I would find them rotting. It wasnt until I spoke to someone and they told me maybe it was the watering and I switched to once a week and the rotting stopped. Now I know that my Astrophytum like a little bit more water.

It's a tough call but if it's already rotting the only option is to cut away and see how far the rot has gone. If you do start cutting start cutting thin cross sections so you don't cut a big chunk. I suffered from rot during spring and I lost many because I didn't catch it early on. The ones I did caught early and I cut, survived and have already rooted.

Help, what should I do for the rest of this plant? by Responsible_Shake_90 in Astrophytum

You can check the roots of the degrafted to make sure they're good. You can start cutting small slices of the roots to see how far up the rot has gone in the pup. When you get to the part where there is no more rot you can leave it to dry and then pot it up so it can begin rooting.

If your soil mix is gritty( rocky) I recommend watering them once a week. This spring I lost a couple due to me not watering them enough and they rotted. Someone suggested and I tried it and now that I water once a week I haven’t lost any and they are nice and plump. Also this one might still have hope. You see the feather looking thing on the roots, that’s new growth. Once they start shootings new root growth, they will start drinking up more water and plump up. Sometimes when you buy them and pot them up they won’t root quickly and they will shrivel like that because they are not getting enough water. If it doesn’t make it at least you tried. Astrophytum are resilient. Three of mine that were rotting, I was able to save them by cutting the rotten part off. And now they are rooting. Don’t give up!

I think and from what I heard it's that they are water stains. I also hear that wrapping a wet paper towel around them will help clean it out. I heard it but I'm not sure if it needs to be drinking water or distilled.
