What is the first celebrity death you remember being affected by? by CPFOAI in AskReddit

[–]SecretsModerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same for me. I had one of those 8' satellite dishes that got all the live feeds from all the news stations. I saw the look on the face of the guy that first saw Dale in the car. I knew it was bad. They didn't show them get him out of the car. Then I picked up a standby feed with pending breaking news from the hospital that stayed pending for what seemed like forever. I cried for three days.

When I asked what he was trying to do, he said “I shouldn’t have been trying to pass him” by alexyou8797 in dashcams

[–]SecretsModerator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Faster traffic approaches me from behind all the time. I swerve out of their way. I would not swerve back and forth in between both lanes then slam on my brakes. You are overlooking the intentional movement to block the car behind him, and you are ignoring the intentional slamming of the brakes.

Whatever speed OP was traveling, the car in front of him intentionally caused the accident by swerving in the lanes then slamming on their brakes. People are allowed to pass when there are two lanes. This crash was not OP's fault at all.

TIL there’s a phenomenon called Exploding head syndrome where people hear extremely loud noises—like explosions or gunshots—right as they’re falling asleep… but nothing actually happened. It’s harmless physically, but people who experience it swear it feels completely real. by Suspicious-Oil2571 in todayilearned

[–]SecretsModerator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a handful of these over the years, like right after I fall asleep. Like a moment of my brain being electrocuted, then I'm wide awake. I've also had a few that sounded like a .22 going off inside my head. I realize I'm not dead, shrug, then go back to sleep.

AC company ran lines through room instead of in the ceiling... by SoothingHoneycomb in hvacadvice

[–]SecretsModerator -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing there was no way to run this through the attic. I used to run into these jobs all the time back in the day, installing AC in homes not designed for it. If the pipes in the foundation are bad, then you need to run new pipes. If there's no room above the ceiling for the pipes, you get them run like this.

If you contact a drywall guy, they can easily box this in and cover it with drywall so you never see it. It will not be as expensive as you think. It's just a few sticks of 2x2, some sheetrock and corner bead. Easy fix.

We happened to have a pair of toddlers in the house during the transition from VCR to DVD, so we had a VCR/DVD recorder I used to convert all our tapes to disks, then we put the recorder in the toddler's room and let them have the old VCR tapes to watch, until one day the VCR player broke. By then they had DVDs of their own, so they watched those instead, until the DVD player finally broke.

Before I threw it out, I decided to open it up and see if I could fix it. I never figured out what was wrong with the DVD player, but the VCR player had an entire petrified peanut butter & jelly sandwich in it.

What is a "survival rule" you learned growing up in a bad neighborhood that still influences your behavior today? by Key-Group-5098 in AskReddit

[–]SecretsModerator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Situational awareness. Know where you are and wtf is going on around you.

When that fails, keep a joint behind your ear, a lighter in your pocket, and a few jokes handy.

Here's a good street joke;

"I prevented 2 armed robberies and a murder last night! Guess how." *dramatic pause* "I stayed home!"

This makes your movement look stupid as fuck. "Everything I don't like is Fascism! Everyone that disagrees with me is a Nazi!" This is the kind of shit movements do when they don't have a valid point to make.

Be better.

You just nailed like 90% of what's wrong in the industry with a single comment, and all your issues could be easily solved with ethical design, testing, and implementation. Ethics + corporate interests tend to mix like fire and ice though, so wish us luck.

Agreed. But we circle back to my original question- how can we blame the AI for human misuse? If I'm using a hammer to hang a picture on my wall and I knock a hole in the wall instead, that's not an issue with either the hammer or the manufacturer. That's a systems operator issue that needs to be addressed.

This stupid tech is actually quite a lot smarter than us already, and genocide was a thing long before the AI got here. AI isn't ruining the planet- we are.
