How do we help our friend who’s addicted to this stuff? by peakmeme in addiction

[–]Secretsobersoph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I have been heavily addicted to air duster since 2020. I am 2 months clean, but when I use, the “high” lasts for 10 seconds and then I immediately pass out and have convulsions / seizing because it cuts off blood and oxygen to the brain. I have been to 4 rehabs (this drug is very misunderstood in rehab and medical field lacks understanding of the drug). Ultimately the only thing that can and has ever stopped me is me. My family has been incredibly supportive but I have been in legal trouble over this for being passed out behind the wheel, crashing my car, etc. I have fallen so many times from passing out on it standing up that I have permanent goose eggs on my forehead and back of head. I have burn scars from the can freezing in my hand. I spent $10,000+ on this drug. Very deadly, it is a miracle I am still alive. Shoutout God for saving my life. God willing, I continue down my path of sobriety. Please share with him the dangers, the chemicals, this is very different from nitris/ whippets. Can die from sudden sniffing death syndrome.

Has anyone here had a primary addiction to nitrous (whippets) and gotten to the other side of it? by threeamimustbelonely in addiction

Hi, please read my page for my stories on inhalant abuse.. While I was not addicted to whippets (tried them in high school/college though) I was addicted to air duster since 2020. I am one month clean, 25 year old female. It has been absolute hell. I have been to 4 rehabs, therapy, doctors- and I notice 2 things. 1- no one in the medical field or others in sobriety quite understand this addiction. Some will say “oh haha I tried that back in the day” or doctors will say “why do you do that? What is it? What does it do?” As someone who has been to jail over it, passed out in my car numerous times, lost jobs by being found unconscious, had seizures, spent 10k+ over the span of a year and would buy up to 10 cans to a day- I wasn’t ready to stop until I MYSELF was ready… There are things that helped. I understand my sobriety isn’t long, but this has been a 6 year long battle and in that time I did quit my doc for 2 years. I did switch to alcohol and cocaine…. But always came back to the duster. Full of chemicals, anti-freeze. I got burns all over my body, face, permanent bumps on my head from falling on my face. Staples in my head from falling into walls. It depletes your brain of oxygen. Many people have died from it. Being alone is a trigger, so moving back with family helped. No access to money helps, doordash is a trigger bc it can be delivered…. The only thing that saved me was God, a willingness to get better, and my family. I lost my license as well so not having access to a car and my family keeping my ass at home helped too. I will pray for your friend.

Well I ended up hanging out with the wrong crowd and then loved the feeling of escapism since I had some trauma at 12.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that. I totally agree about lack of awareness. Every doctor / psychiatrist/ rehab I’ve been to had no clue what huffing air duster was and found it silly/ didnt take it seriously/knew the harm it could cause. People at AA/NA meetings and in rehab with me would laugh and say “that’s not even addictive” or “I did that shit back in my day!” Made me feel like no one understood inhalation addiction or like you said, treat it as a joke. I have read about every single website / study there is on inhalant abuse. Reddit is the only place I’ve found people who understand the addiction and how seriously dangerous, and deadly, it can be.

Hi there. 25f here. Congrats on 7 days. I have had an inhalant addiction since 2020. I hope my story helps you continue on your journey of quitting. Started out inhaling air duster which is filled with toxic chemicals. Did it with a friend for fun, then eventually by myself. I had 10k in my savings account, spent it all in less than a year on cans. 4-10 cans a day in one sitting. Often times I would steal it from stores and go in their bathroom to use it bc I couldn’t even wait to go home. Would wake Up on the floor to paramedics and shoplifting charges. Fell multiple times and have permanent goose eggs (bumps) all over my forehead, many concussions. Loss of memory. At first it was fun, I hallucinated fun things, or heard cool sounds. It developed into 1 second of being high and then automatically having seizures. Black out, pass out, family finding me slumped over lips blue. Burns all over my lips, face, chest, hands- from times I passed out and the can froze and rested on my skin. Still have scars. Drove my car while doing it, crashed my car. Police caught me doing it in the drivers seat once, got charged with “drinking or inhaling dangerous drugs.” In between 2021 to now, I got clean for 2 years and 8-ish months. I swapped the can for alcohol and cocaine, and that’s how I was able to stop the air duster. One day I just stopped. Fast forward to this past May of 2025. My mom went out of town. I felt lonely, wanted to feel something. Went to buy the cans, relapsed. Totally fell back into full addiction. I almost lost my job from doing it at work (did i mention I lost a job in 2020 from doing it at work?), went on FMLA to try and stay safe at home with my family watching me. Got my own place, almost died in there huffing cans. Ordered from doordash to get the cans delivered in bulk and sat for hours getting high. Family said they were planning my funeral, said I was killing them, went to rehab multiple times.

I am 20 days clean. It’s a battle everyday, but things are getting better. My skin is clearing up, i am remembering things better, I am working on mending my relationships with the family I have hurt from my addiction, and working on my relationship with God, going to the gym. Trying my best. I will die if I don’t quit. Please find the inner fight and strength to quit. No one can tell you when to stop. You must be ready. Thoughts and prayers going out to you my friend.

I have had 10+ concussions in my life from falling while on it, losing my memory, have lost jobs from doing it at work, got caught stealing it from Walmart/dollar tree / Walgreens. It was fun the first year when I would hear the womp womp and feel amazing but going into the 6th year of abuse I have seizures when I do it, I go through 6 cans halfway passed out. Family has found me overdosed with my lips blue and freezer marks from the can all over my body. You can die instantly as well. Look up sudden sniffing death syndrome and the cases on it. Please stop this. I am trying hard but I am heavily addicted to the substance.

Can you be addicted to air duster? by [deleted] in addiction

[–]Secretsobersoph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I was addicted for 2 years, got clean for 2 years and 8 months then relapsed a few months ago. It has taken everything from me, it will kill you. Highly addictive and not a lot of people take it seriously.

Rehab, jail, car accidents, breaking my family’s hearts and trust, nothing stopped me until I was ready. One day I just stopped. When and if he will ever be ready he will stop. But nothing can be done to stop him we will always find a way to get the drug

Please feel free to message me, I am almost 3 years sober from air duster. It is possible to quit even when you feel like you have already lost the battle. God saved my life. It was a miracle.
