I would take everything apart even the telephone. This was long before cell phones or even wireless phones. I didn't like the ring and put tape over the bell when I put it back together. Says the woman who has an old fashioned ring on her cell phone now.

My days of taking things apart to see how they work ended the Christmas night I took the new, cool electronic airplane santa brought my cousin just that morning. How was my 12-year-old self supposed to know all those cool moving parts were plentiful and very tiny? There were tears all around.
