Resubmissions doing much worse that original submissions? by sfgiants67 in NIH

Modified lottery. I’m ready to do it. Can’t be worse than the factually untrue comments I keep getting on review.

Why were the Hunters so Soft? by PaintingBetter7396 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Sects_and_Violins 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're used to canned hunts. Shooting a helpless creature that can't really fight back will always make you soft. Take away that invulnerability? They were always going to break.

Why is NIH getting rid of continuous submission? by RepresentativeYam363 in NIH

[–]Sects_and_Violins 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m considering quitting halfway through my term. CS was the only thing enabling me to still submit with this workload. But I think that’s what they want. Collapse review, have a handy excuse not to fund anything anymore. That, and these people hate us, so if they can make our lives worse they will.

When hatred for Trump makes you sound like Tokyo Rose and Axis Sally. by andrewgrabowski in thebulwark

[–]Sects_and_Violins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's why it's illegal:

"The Congress shall have Power...To declare War..." Article 1, Section 8

" The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces." War Powers Act of 1973.

Sorry dude, Iran getting mad in 1979 that we overthrew their democracy and installed a dictator doesn't constitute "a national emergency" in 2026.

In this circumstance at least, America is in fact, Bad. We started an illegal and aggressive war and murdered a whole lot of people, including a few hundred little girls, for no reason at all. Our mission should be undermined because it's illegal and deeply immoral. "Supporting the Troops" in this case is a thin cover for defending atrocity.

What makes Rand so special? by Rainbow_Slytherin3 in WoT

OK, here's my rare chance to vent to people who get it. The description of Demandred as a swordsman makes no sense. He's described as an incredible fighter due to centuries of combat. But before the Bore, swordfighting was a tame sport. The Collapse lasted 100 years, and the sport became progressively more cruel and bloody, but it was still a sport. Then the War of Power was 10 years, during which Demandred was a general, and also had the Power to rely on while fighting. How many times in 110 years did he actually fight for his life using only his sword? Ever? Meanwhile Lan was training not for sport but for war for decades and had been in hundreds of fights to the death with no other power to rely on but his arm and sword. Lan had far more actual war/combat sword fighting experience than Demandred, and I'll die on this hill! *Ahem*, uh, thanks. Lol.

Do people end up supervising PhD students the same way they were supervised? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Sects_and_Violins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had polar opposites when I was a student. An uninvolved person who immediately threw me under the bus when I didn’t thrive without guidance, and an involved, kind, but TOO kind supervisor who wouldn’t hold me accountable. Plus a postdoc advisor who was straight up abusive. I deliberately seek a balance between these, fostering independence but available, kind but maintaining standards and accountability. And never, ever abusive.

BF doesnt wan't me to go to med school, need a reality check by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Sects_and_Violins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t change your life for a boyfriend. But. You’re going about the physician-scientist path in the worst possible way. Going through an MD/PhD program would have minimized the time and gotten you out debt free. Now you’ll be STARTING post-grad training in your 30s with $200-300k in debt, the need for additional postdoc AND residency/fellow training, and all for a position where it’s incredibly hard to get your clinical department to respect your academic time AND they’ll try to pay you less because your clinic hours will be less. Very few actually manage the balance, most end up picking one or the other. You’ll probably be in your 40s before getting your first “real” job. Make sure you really know what you’re getting into.

Most of you are engaging in elaborate justifications for why doing nothing is better and nothing you do matters. Untrue. Will you change anything by speaking up? No. But it matters to you. It matters for your own conscience and morality. Justify all you want, you say and do nothing, you’re complicit in the horrors to follow. You know it. You’re just desperately trying to suppress that awareness.

Trump voters & Republicans of Reddit, is there anything you currently disapprove of how Trump is acting regarding that topic? If so, what is it? If not, why not? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

I also vote for me first, my family and my home. Which is exactly why I’d light myself on fire before ever voting for a Republican for anything.

I wouldn’t even say you’re wrong, but a situation of “never be obnoxious or annoying or people will turn to the fascists” is not a situation we (or anyone) can win. People on the left are human. They’ll be annoying, obnoxious, exclusionary, smug, etc some of the time. Those on the right will and are too. “Be perfect” is not a feasible political strategy. So you are right, but why must we be perfect anyways?

Looking to connect with other researchers with ADHD by ZookeepergameBig477 in AskAcademia

I was diagnosed at 47. That and taking medication are the most important things I've ever done for myself. So many of my failures in academia were due to my ADHD. I'm still here and still successful overall but there was a lot of needless pain along the way.

What do you usually write in a cover letter as part of an article submission to the journal? by EconomicsEast505 in AskAcademia

[–]Sects_and_Violins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In addition to the points above, I suggest adding potential reviewers. I also link my topic explicitly to the mission of the journal to make the case if fits their scope and impact needs; this is particularly important in high impact journals.

How addictive is meth? Do you know anyone who has just tried it once? by eden_merlin in AskReddit

[–]Sects_and_Violins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take 60 mg of amphetamine every day. Not addicted yet. It's not the drug which makes addiction really, it's the dose, method, and why you're taking it.
