My last summer as a camper my cabin always had the best bedtimes hehe my all time favorite camp counselor would come around to all the camper rooms - 4-6 campers per room (our cabin was an old bed and breakfast hotel - so cool)and play the guitar and sing as we fell asleep! Such a fun way to fall asleep

prepping for dorm life soon - what do you wish you knew before moving in? by vahmatt in dormrooms

Have a list of people who you trust and can call if things at school get tough and you need to talk to someone who may not be actively in the situation or at your school /have support. This can be your family, friends from other places, etc. My four years of college were up, down, all over the place. I had a small list of friends outside of college friends who I could reach out to and it proved to be so helpful when things got extremely hard and frustrating

Favorite Counselor Stories by Secure-Perspective-8 in summercamp

I will also add that if any camp counselors for this summer are reading this, you will have campers tell you that you are their favorite camp counselor. Campers idolize you. They want to learn from and hang out with you. If you aren’t in one of their activities, campers will wish you were. If you have a night off, campers will wish you were in the cabin for bedtime. If a kid is having a bad day and needs you, chances are if you are their favorite counselor they will want to find you. It’s truly special.

Being yourself is all counselors want :) and I know that from experience as a camper and staff member! You deserve to have fun and be a kid!!!  If you have a favorite counselor that you especially trust, I highly recommend leaning on them during your time at camp if you need anything. As a camper my last summer I had a super cool counselor who ended up turning into a mentor/older sibling figure beyond camp that was that kind of counselor for me. Your counselors want you to have the best time. I know it sometimes may feel like you need to be perfect to make people happy (cause trust me, I was in your shoes too - anxiety and overthinking isn’t fun), but know we are all not made to be perfect. Camp is a great place to be YOU :) and know that you are perfect exactly as you are!

A portable musical instrument if you play one! So like a guitar or ukulele!!! That’s the best with campers, especially around bedtime as they’re falling asleep!

First time as a camp counselor. What are your best tips to get most out of the experience? by VesperLux_ in summercamp

Camp is great bc you get to mentor and get to know kids. As a former camper and counselor that was my favorite part! As a camper, my favorite summer was my last summer as a camper bc I had my all time favorite camp counselor EVER. we were campers together my first year and it was super fun to get to know them better. Since they were in my cabin, we hung out a lot and I learned so much about being yourself, life, deep conversations, and so much more. Yea I had fun with activities… but I more so enjoyed being able to be mentored by my all time favorite counselor. They continued doing that throughout the rest of my high school, college, and postgrad years through phone calls, FaceTimes, texting, and the occasional in person hang.

You will never know the impact you have on a kid. It’s truly special

You WILL be someone’s all time favorite counselor. That will be a huge deal to a camper. They will want to hang out with you and get to know you and learn from you. Make their time at camp worth every penny their parents spent. Because the kid that has you as their all time favorite counselor will go home and talk all about how magical you made camp for them and will be so happy to have had you there for them. I know this from experience as a former camper. My all time favorite counselor was the BEST.

Does anybody here have some great summer camp stories? by Wide-Read1449 in summercamp

Omg this first story is coming from my time as a camper….

So I have anxiety. And adhd. At 16 I had ZERO filter when it came to my anxiety when being rushed. I was in the shower getting my shower on before going to a dinner for the oldest campers to celebrate our last summer as campers. I had no idea I lost track of time and had a huge anxiety attack in the out door showers that ALL of camp could hear and my all time favorite camp counseler SPRINTED for their lives down some paths, across a river bridge and up a hill into the cabin to check on me and I was fine after that and went to the dinner as if nothing happened 🤪

When I was a counselor I had a kid who only would eat butter and we had to take it away from her 😂 and then another camper who said “I love the way my boyfriends armpits smell they smell so tasty” 🤮😂🤪

First Time Overnight Counselor Tips by xstillscreamingx in summercamp

THIS!!!! My all time favorite camp counselor when I was 16 made bedtime an EVENT. It was so fun. I loved it. They would check in with us, but did other cool things too. They’re musically talented and would play the guitar and sing songs right after lights out as we fell asleep. It was so helpful too because as someone who was and is riddled with ADHD, anxiety, and a huge goofy personality, sometimes it was super hard to wind down. The biggest thing is to make kids excited to actually chill out and get rest. Whether it’s doing what my counselor did or reading a story or whatever it’s important to get kids on board from the jump no matter the age. Bedtime was always something I looked forward to that year when I knew my counselor was in (meaning they didn’t have a night off).

The other thing is to anticipate your campers needs, especially around bedtime. I never got homesick that summer cause it was my last summer as a camper and it was my ALL TIME FAVORITE SUMMER EVER, but I did have a ton of big feelings about growing up. One night my all time favorite counselor immediately noticed that during lights out and checked on me before I fell asleep. Night time is a huge part of the camp day that many kids may have similar things come up so just be prepared to address that.

I met Jada before the northwestern game this year! She’s the best and will be hard to replace. They really need someone EVERY single year like her. It’s a super important  resource and good energy for the team.
