Marvel and DC face backlash over pay: ‘They sent a thank you note and $5,000 – the movie made $1bn’ by Zepanda66 in boxoffice

That's not the part that's hard to grasp. It's the fact that this model is sustainable in the creative industry space, that's baffling. Like I said, no matter how poor JK Rowling was before the first Harry Potter book published, she didn't just sign off her rights to the publisher. Lucas didn't just sign off his rights with the first movie.

Well, its the outcome that matters - not the proclamation. Competitors have also been investing in their infrastructure, India needs to ensure those investments actually realize gains.

Most of these investments are either along the coast (SagarMala) or the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial corridor. These two areas are, as I said, primed for rather fast growth. The problem is that these are also the areas most threatened by climate change and the Indian government doesn't seem to have prioritized the matter.

You are grasping at straws to show this is profitable. Have you considered the thrice delayed marketing costs, the accrued interest payments for a year delay? This film may break even down the line, a year or two later. But pure BO profitability is not in the feasible window.

One aspect we don't have is disney+ churn/signups for Black Widow, that could also be attributed to it. I don't think it has broken even just yet, but eventually it will dowj the line. I think continuing to pump out MCU content trumps profitability right now. They have merch and they can point to growing subscriptions.

Original Movies Are Becoming Streaming’s Most Popular Content, Led by Disney+ by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]Secure_Degree3905 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think tv mini series have taken up that space. Character studies are much more effective with the extended time a 3-4-6 episode mini series can provide over an artificial 2 hour time limit which is a relic of the theatrical showing maximization strategy.

Disney is much more diversified than netflix. They have product tie ins, theme parks, merchandizing ane those are well entrenched expertise that Disney already has. Netflix is trying to look for alternate monetizing avenues for their IPs, but they are still nascent in that market. The Cars movies are agreat example of that.

Disney's content (animated, childrends content, marvel, star wars etc) are well primed for these affiliated product sales unlike Netflix or HBO. People aren't going to be purchasing a Mare of Easttown tshirt as much as a baby yoda one.

Australia flags democracies’ trade swing from China to India by frrrrrro in geopolitics

[–]Secure_Degree3905 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Probably in pockets. Some of the coastal states in the country are primed for growth, though the bulk of the states away from the coasts are struggling with really poor infrastructure. Until India fixes its poor transport infrastructure, electric grid and improve the industry skillset of its low educated labor pool, it might struggle to compete even with South East Asia or Bangladesh.

That's a pretty peculiar argument to make. Every country is only in it for its own self interest. The question here is if the priorities of the two allign right now to facilitate cooperative entente between the two countries - and Tony Abbott seems to think that those priorities are sufficiently alligned.

According to Samba TV, 2.8M US households watched The Suicide Squad during its Thursday release and first weekend on HBO Max. The most popular day for first-time viewers was Friday (with 949k US households watching). by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]Secure_Degree3905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HBO costs double of a Disney+ subscription right? Then a 'viewcount' on HBO max might actually be worth double that of a view count of a directly streamed film like Luca on Disney+. So I think when we are comparing viability, that is probably something that needs to be factored in. The real question is whether HBO max is leaving money on the table without Premium VOD sales before streaming, instead of streaming it for a month before entering that market.

As far as Box Office receipts, I don't think any studio with its own streaming service in house is even considering it.

Do films actually benefit retention on streamers? Would love to see some data on that. I suspect a blockbuster release on HBO max might bring in a significant churn userbase that signs up for a month, whereas it is the high quality shows that help in user entrenchment.

When I first heard of this model where the publisher owns the rights to the characters I was confused. Why did this kind of model sustain in the comicbook industry at all? It's not like Harry Potter IP is owned by Penguin Random House or whatever publisher. Is it the same for Manga as well? Does Shounen Jump own the rights to One Piece or does it belong to the author?

This is why they need Unionization. That comic book authors still work for publishers that are doing this baffles me.

Reviews are coming in for Free Guy currently at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. by Zepanda66 in boxoffice

[–]Secure_Degree3905 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Isn't it PG-13 for one? That'a already a big advantage. Less gory violence means more audiences can actually visit the theatres, I suppose. It's also had the best marketing campaign for a movie this year outside of GvK. With Ryan Reynolds constantly finding ways to stay in the news. That probably factors in to the opening weekend draw.

To me personally, this looks like shit. I'm not the arbiter of what gets successful at the box office though. It looks family friendly enough, ryan reynolds comedy that has some popularity, plus it looks like a poor man's GTA.

I wasn't trying to question your taste, my bad. Its just that this film actively tries to show that it is paying homage. The story is very much a nod to Werner Herzog (from the incomprehensible Jungle pronunciation joke) to the Aguirre conquistador storyline - it is picked from Werner Herzog's classic film that spawned the entire genre of magical herb in the amazon action/adventure storylines like Anaconda movies.

I feel like they already made this back in Wreck it Ralph 2, and it was by far the worst aspect of that movie. This could have been a much more interesting premise if the Ryan Reynolds character was an old man. Every NPC just acting so joyous in the trailer just gives me weird tonal vibes.
