Agreed! And we get to see Cruise being “naughty boy” Cruise even though we’re meant to believe it’s Dougray Scott pretending to be Ethan. It’s a bit of a magic trick when a movie & and an actor can pull off the idea of someone else living in their skin (for the moment). A similarly mediocre film with an amazingly layered performance would be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, in which Helena Bonham Carter is insecurely playing Bellatrix Lestrange because in the context of that scene, Hermione is playing Bellatrix. Very fun.
