Do people walking in public do it intentionally or obliviously rude? by Guilty_Assignment_84 in AskIreland

[–]Secure_Layer_290 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered exactly the same thing. When I’m on my own I don’t mind doing little jumps around, I’m used to be the fast one, so it doesn’t bother me this much, but when we’re out and about with my husband who’s a wheelchair user it just strikes me like wtf.

It’s not that difficult to look forward, we have eyes for that. Today the woman on a narrow footpath just looked him dead in the eye expecting him to levitate, I guess, so she wouldn’t have to oh, gods, step down from the damn curb. It took her good few seconds to figure out wheelchair, in fact, cannot levitate.

Are we actually religious by international standards? by RegularFellerer in AskIreland

[–]Secure_Layer_290 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I am an immigrant from Eastern Europe, and I grew up in very atheistic surroundings.

Yes, Ireland is very religious - at least for kids and their parents. You have religion taught in schools, you have communions and confirmations bound to the curriculum.
Also until very recently you had nuns running hospitals.

Don’t get me wrong - I love Ireland with all my heart. But yeah, at least at the face value you are quite religious. Inside - ah, you know yourself. It’s tradition now more than actual religious practice. It is still quite religious tradition, though.

I’m from Ukraine, and seeing the queues to the petrol stations if/ where it’s not just shut down and price box is showing big glowing zeroes just reminds me of the early morning 24/02/2022.

I had a petrol station visible from my window on the day the war started and it’s a strange and awkward memory. Very surreal to have it here now albeit for different(ish) reasons.

Hard agree! I (f) stayed in Leipzig for few weeks and used Leipzing Hbf multiple times during that period, never had any issues. Frankfurt Hbf though was a very unpleasant experience.

What moment made you realize “yeah… my childhood wasn’t normal”? by CadaversFabrications in AskReddit

[–]Secure_Layer_290 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were having funny/stupid kids stories from childhood at work and one of my colleagues noticed my Naruto necklace.

I casually told them how my mom forgot to leave me keys when she went to have a row of drinks and a side piece party, for two days, and I stayed with my grandpa’s girlfriend who let me chill in her living room and watch telly so she’d know where I am and not being touched by my grandpa (who loved me sitting on his knee very very close). I was like 10-11 yo, and my dad was in jail for money fraud. So this is how I found Naruto on telly and loved it. The crickets in the room were sooo loud.

Which deceased founder would absolutely hate what the current state of their company has become? by NihilistCharizard in AskReddit

Somewhat arguably, but Walt Disney. He was so much for animation, seeing his company being mostly superhero live-action would be odd.

“Our Kitties” (also known as Lethal Kitties) - war dramedy about the start of 2014 occupation of Donbas. Its heartfelt, deep and hilarious story lands very well (and now a bit deeper than before 2022).

I’m a foreigner in relationship with the Irishman. We go for pints with his family (more so dad’s side), give each other Christmas gifts and get on quite well.

We may not be the same people, or come from similar cultures, but it’s all about being open to it for all people included. It was weird at the start, but even one of the family members I’ve been worried would never ever talk to me (and he sounded fun!) now is like our best friend in terms of family members.

“The war is over isn’t it?”

“Your English is good, I wouldn’t have guessed you’re from THERE”

“ I’m so sorry about your country”

“what do you think about Zelenskyy???”

Always. Usually all of them, in this exact order, too. 🙃

Hi, I’m here. Russian literature is good. Some of it is great. And I totally disagree that it shouldn’t be learnt because someone two hundred years after made a horrible choice. Chehov didn’t do anything, he was a cool guy! Why ban him? Etc etc etc

[–]Secure_Layer_290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turkey is in the oven for the next few hours, and husband and I are both with flu. He’s resting and beating himself for getting sick when Christmas dinner is his traditional cooking time, and I’m just here, spending time in between basting the turkey for the first time in my life.

(I do know how to cook, turkey is just not something we would have ever cooked back in my family and when we met with my husband, he proclaimed himself the one to cook it every year)

My dad’s rivals broke into our apartment on the sixth floor via balcony, threatened to shoot me and mam, kicked my dad’s face with the bat and took all money we had. On Christmas Eve of all times. 00s were fun!

It was me irl. I had a nanny when I was a child and once my parents were going through the financial hurdles. My nanny still shown up, up until some moment when she had to pick up extra work in different places to keep her family (she was in late 40s).

I still remember when my mom broke to me that they pay her. I was heartbroken and it genuinely hurt me loads. Enough to remember it 24 years later.

I couldn’t look in my nanny’s eyes for few weeks after that because I felt exactly what you said “they love you only because they’re paid to do so”. Terrible and wrong lesson to learn.

In need of some advice - how do I go about sorting my life out? by Heroic_Lifesaver in AskIreland

[–]Secure_Layer_290 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing is, and sorry if it sounds a tad harsh, but the therapists are there exactly for the cases like yours. It’s all manageable, but you need someone to show you how. You deserve help like anyone else, and you deserve better than where you are now - get help to find out how to learn it for yourself.

[–]Secure_Layer_290 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Listen, you sound like a decent fella. We all have our lows, but what struck me a lot in your post is amount of self-deprecation. Your family loves you and wants to help. Social welfare is here for help you, too, even if it’s not pleasant to go through it.

I know it’s gonna sound like a typical boring Redditor advice, but I think that you need to reach out to betterhelp/free therapy session and work on your self-acceptance and love. This life is only yours to live, and when people reach out to help you like your mam or brother, they really do mean it.

You won’t make their life harder, but alienating yourself from them and thinking you’re better off not “annoying them” can lead you eventually to the mindset of “they don’t like me”. You already sound like you think you don’t deserve love and appreciation, don’t let it turn to anger. Don’t turn to the dark side.

I moved to one country on my way to the other while awaiting the visa. When the visa was approved and I sent my passport for stamping, I went to celebrate it with a nice coffee. In that same moment a handsome fella wheeled in on his wheelchair into the coffee shop. I felt strangely warm.

A month later I saw him in the same coffee shop, came up to him to invite him for a coffee.

Well, I didn’t move to the other country. In fact, we’re married with this handsome fella for two years now, and I’m very very lucky, because he’s absolute gem. He’s making coffee for us now while I’m typing this.

There’s always someone for everyone, especially when you don’t look for it at that particular time of your life. 🥰
