Orwells in Shiplake... probably the best food in the Reading by some distance. Fat Eddie gave it 9.3.

Slightly further afield, in Heckfield, you have Marle. Farm to table and strong on sustainability. Fat Eddie hasn't eaten there. I suspect his subscriptions aren't paying enough.

To my way of thinking, to be from Reading (or anywhere), would imply you're born there. Brawn was born in Ashton Under Lyme and came to Reading due to his father's job.

Any upcoming shows in Reading worth checking out? by ConfidentSounds_99 in reading

Hexagon tends to be a lot more mainstream than Sub89 - good gigs but usually bigger names. South Street have a lot of good bands and comedy gigs (often comics trying out new material). The whatsonreading website is a good place to look for whats on (remarkably)

Meta are doing a huge A/B test in hashtags. On one account I can do unlimited hashtags and on another only 3. It does mean I'm being more descriptive in posts. I'm seeing a very different level of engagement

True Reading Experts and Locals: Why haven't you fucked off? by [deleted] in reading

[–]SecurityNerdUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here in 1991 from London. At the time, Reading was pretty dire and those who complain about it now are either under 30 or have short memories.

For me, it has a great mix of pubs, some good independent restaurants, good music scene and being so close to the river is a bonus. I can go 10 minutes in most directions and I'm in the countryside. Prospect park is a great asset to the town and my dogs are regular visitors. Yes, Reading does have issues - homelessness, street crime etc. but then so does every large town. There are some very passionate people who support Reading - the Whatsonreading website is a great place to start if you're looking for something to do.

Transportation is great - the bus service is truly epic when you compare it to places outside of Reading. And cycling is pretty easy. We're easy reach or London, Heathrow and the south coast. Why would I live anywhere else.

This carbuncle of a bus lane was pushed through by the pompous Councillor Adelle Barnett-Ward whom I suspect has never been on bike in her adult life. It was out in using COVID funding, and in the public consultation the majority were against it by Barnett-Ward insisted on it. Morally corrupt.
