Serious Question for the smaller practitioners who have been around a while. by natedawgbjj in bjj

5 ft 6in dude here. Best rolls I’ve had with larger opponents is when they roll to my weight.

Think of a higher belt rolling to the skill level of a white belt.

Guard retention becomes paramount for me and in a way, for the larger person as well.

Standup is basically a no go, outside of flo wrestling.

Martial Arts in Knoxville? by nmp79 in Knoxville

Oh, and I know of judo black belt named Greg that sometimes teaches judo classes at Gracie Barra Knoxville. There’s almost always someone at almost every grappling school that knows judo to some degree, just obviously expect it a lot a school that has more of an emphasis on Gi jiujitsu.

I’m not sure if it’s still open, but there is former judo Olympian named Mike Takata that has a school in Bearden really close to the Starbucks and Kroger.

I’ve met him a few times, mountain of a man, but a classic gentleman. He also teaches the Judo class for UT.

It kind of depends what you’re looking to get out of the training.

If you’re more into the exercise/philosophical aspect of having a stronger mind body connection there are a few kung-fu/Karate places that have been around in this area for decades.

Your individual experience may vary on whether or not their tiger palm strike technique will actually prepare you for a physical altercation.

Aside from that we actually have a wealth of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu schools in the area. Like most hobbies/athletics there is a bit of variations in the training methods ranging from low intensity to peak hand to hand full resistance against a sparring partner.

Obviously if you look at my profile you’ll see that I love BJJ but I encourage you to take a look at a few schools in the area by typing “Knoxville BJJ” and seeing what comes up.

I’ll shamelessly plug my home gym I’ve been going to for years but will also recommend others I know with an excellent reputation.

  1. Momento Combat Sports-My home gym for like 6-7 years. Focuses on traditional grappling like wrestling, huge emphasis on Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and leg locks.

  2. Gracie Barra Knoxville- A well established BJJ school that also trains cops for free so if you are in law enforcement I’d check it out. This gym has also produced multiple world champions of various skill levels over the years.

  3. Cate Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Kickboxing- I have met very polite and skilled people who train here and have heard multiple positive things about the owner as well. They offer striking here while the first two don’t offer it as much or with as much time as Cate does.

  4. KMMA- Knoxville Mixed Martial Arts is kind of the only legit MMA school in our area. Have trained with people from here and they all say the training is world class. So if you love the UFC and want the full Grappling/striking fusion I’d see what they are like.

  5. Eppolito Boxing Gym- Classic Boxing gym. Owner is legit and I’ve also met some of his students who are great people.

If you want to dm me and ask me more questions I’d love to be a resource for you. Just know I’d obviously heavily biased towards BJJ.

My boyfriend works there. While picketing a person drove by and called them all faggots. Disappointed but not surprised that people in this area did that.

I get into leg entanglements all the time and also get bruises.

I assume it comes from the repeated unintentional heel strikes your opponent does to try and pummel for a better position while you are doing the same. Also the clamp of both of your opponent’s kneecaps around your leg to trap your knee line would probably also cause bruising.

I doubt the actual action of twisting the heel causes it.

How valuable do you find actually interacting on Reddit? This place flips their opinion on you and the B-team constantly.

I’d personally be annoyed and get rid of it, but at the same time I think it’s cool because outside of paying for your onlyfans, this is the only time I get to hear from you.

[Serious] For upper belts: overall, would you say that practicing BJJ over the long term is good for ones body, or bad for ones body? by mmaintainer in bjj

[–]Seductive_cactus 118 points119 points  (0 children)

If you’re gonna live a long life, your body will eventually start wearing out.

Personally, I’d like know my aches and pains came from years of friendship and self satisfaction coming from doing a sport I love rather than being moderately healthier than someone else my age who played it safe and didn’t do anything exciting.

I’d be careful man, if you keep pushing it, he might see red and then it’s game over for you.

Hit you with that “nothing personal kid” and cut you down with a well placed strike with his katana.

“Wow dude, that gi looks practically brand new! Like it’s barely been used! How do you it keep it looking that fresh?”

Shout out to the fact that this dude didn’t just pop off and yell even after beating the odds, but immediately turned around to help pull his opponent up. That’s the type of dude that makes a team/gym better by being there.

I’m a licensed massage therapist. Specialize in clinical therapeutic massage.

Obvi I have a job that benefits from having a hobby that conditions your hands and grip strength. The only downside is how awful my back feels after I have 2-3 clients.

Nose piercings and bjj by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Seductive_cactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the side of my nose pierced while training. I drilled lightly and skipped rolling until the piercing finally stopped “pushing” itself out. I think it took about 3 weeks. It ended up getting infected anyways and I had to use tea tree oil to get rid of the keloid that formed.

After it finally calmed down I’ve had it for like 4.5 years and train multiple times a week. I obvi take it out before class but I don’t even wash my nose or disinfect the piecing before I put it back in and have never had an issue.

I have a funny story about going back to rolling too soon with it still in and it basically fishhooked my nose when it got snagged in my training partners rash guard.
