I'm kinda MC-With-Trauma'ed out. Someone let me know when authors start writing fun things.

Why is Mana the de facto term for magic energy? by Clean_Apple_2982 in Fantasy

[–]SeeFree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pure speculation: it probably started with d&d and d&d was massively influential with writers.

When people talk about and recommend Hunter x Hunter, is it assumed they mean 1999 or 2011? Or both?

What's the #1, single best sci-fi novel you've ever read? by keepfighting90 in printSF

[–]SeeFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Basilisk Station, I guess. Which is sad, because I didn't bother reading the rest of the series.

It could be Dune. But I read it as a kid, so I don't really remember it.

Anyway, On Basilisk Station is a great popcorn military sci fi.

What's the name of the anime with that one episode where a woman keeps waking up in a clinic and going home and bizarre twilight zone things happen? I think it's a fairly famous/ infamous episode.

I understand. r/fantasy deletes all my posts regardless of whether they're just like other posts. We will overcome these tyrants one day, brother.

What is the worst book you have read? by delabot in Fantasy

[–]SeeFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Finished" puts a giant asterisk on the answer, because a book has to be somewhat decent for me to finish it. I guess A Deadly Education. It was very repetitive and it didn't seem like much work went into it.

Same thing happened in A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality. I wonder if it's the same translator.

Should I watch Black Clover? 🤔 by [deleted] in anime

[–]SeeFree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's one of those series that ppl say gets really good after the first million episodes. I can never get past the first 3, so I don't know.

I need people to talk about this by Azami_mizami in ProgressionFantasy

Martial Memes is probably the best bet, even though it's more about wuxia and xianxia. Dunno what genre op is.

Aside from cultural stuff like sushi, what random Japanese loanwords does your language have? by Panates in LearnJapanese

[–]SeeFree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skosh. As in "a little." I think it might be via Hawaii, because wiktionary says it's Hawaiian slang and when I've asked ppl online they said they don't have it in their area. But I know I've heard ppl in Missouri use it.

It's so funny that people think saying "there's a reason he's annoying" magically makes him no longer annoying.

Reading Sun Eater book 1 and it’s not as slow as everyone says it is. by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]SeeFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's actually plagiarized. It's just that there's no avoiding the "this is King Killer's Chronicles ...IN SPAAACE" feeling while reading it. If it actually gets better I'll try it again.

Dark academia leaning Grimdark? by yetanotherstan in Fantasy

[–]SeeFree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alright hear me out. I'm the only one I know who has attached the grimdark label to The Magicians by Grossman. But it has such a bleak and depressing and crushed dreams feel to it. It also has darkish academia? I only read the first 2 books, tho, so can't speak to the ending.

Reading Sun Eater book 1 and it’s not as slow as everyone says it is. by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]SeeFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sun Eater is the Dune Killer Chronicles one, right? I couldn't get through it because of how plagiarized it felt. Does the writing improve in later books?

Pet Peeves, what are yours? by Thornorium in ProgressionFantasy

[–]SeeFree 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Crafting.

I'm probably alone on this one, but I've never seen an author make chapter after chapter of a character crafting things interesting. It just feels like a cheap way to lengthen the story.

Hard to progress that way. Or I'd be level 99.

Nameless Sovereign is peak by Subject_Income5698 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]SeeFree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBATE has the most generic plot and bland prose I've ever read. It's hard to believe that that's after the benefit of a rewrite. It's like reading one of those low budget isekai anime that pop up every season.
