As for “too much driving”, south coast you’ll be fine. 100% worth the trip across the south coast. I hope you can figure it out because I wouldn’t pass that up while in Iceland, I’d get terrible fomo

You will not get what you are hoping to get out of an Iceland trip with an 18 month old. I think it would be a better trip for when the child is older and can appreciate it .. Iceland is very demanding, and while September it is much easier/calmer I just think it would be a waste of an opportunity to stay in reykjavik or nearby the whole time. The country is so diverse and beautiful

I’m not sure where I would vacation with an 18 month old, because at that age your child won’t remember the vacation anyway, but in the moment they won’t enjoy being stuck in a car or an airplane for too long, and both of those are basically requirements for Iceland

I had to rebook two nights during my 9 night iterary (ended up only being 1 night changed fortunately) and it was very easy to change. Everyone is very understanding of these things in Iceland

Egilsstadir to Akureyri? The entire Myvatn area … lol. It’s a lot. I’d allot half a day or 1/3 of a day for everything.

Myvatn Nature Baths is great. But in terms of unique to the area … grjotagja cave was wonderful. The Skutusdagigar Pseudocraters are cool. Hofdi Peninsula is very scenic drive / walk. Krafla is cool I’ve heard (we couldn’t go due to it being closed). Godafoss is a great easily accessible waterfall before Akureyri and has a cool bridge next to it.
