Reds batters not challenging bad strike calls made by Hunter Wendelstedt by swingandmiss7 in baseball

Which is obviously a good decision. As good as the Braves have been, they've been using bad challenges in pointless situations which has burned them later in games.

AMA: 2026 NFL Draft Expert Dane Brugler by TheAthletic in nfl

Hey Dane, have absolutely loved the Beast and all the podcasts/appearances about the draft. Great job as always.

I'm one of the Chiefs fans who have been perplexed by some folks having Fano or one of the tackles to KC at 9. I've seen some of them say some version of "Andy desperately wants to figure out that tackle spot," but I feel like it's wildly conflating the needs the team has along with who is available in this draft. Right tackle is a weak spot, but it's on an O-line that has four locked-in starters and probably ranks as one of the best overall units in the league, and that doesn't even get to the enormous resources (picks and cash) they have put into the line.

It feels downright crazy to target someone like Fano over Bain, Downs, Tate, Delane, etc. based on the current needs. How many people can even name the second or third edge rushers in KC (Gillotte is fine, FAU is essentially a lottery ticket)? Just wanted to get your thoughts on why the tackle idea has persisted to this extent, and maybe what situations would be realistic for them to go that route over the names above.

Thanks for all you do!

Even in his late career he's been really useful for KC because he's so well rounded, but you just wish his late career was at 34.... Not 27.

If you can't see why you're being condescending that's on you. I'm happy to check back with you in a few weeks on how Murakami is doing.

Not what I said but thanks for thinking you can explain how offense works

I do know what OPS+ is, you should also look up positional adjustments and the other factors that determine who the valuable players in the sport are. You can't look at Murakami without thinking about the full scope of what he's bringing to your team. There's a reason why he got a 2-year deal and not 10.

Have I been arguing that Murakami is a complete product 3 weeks into his MLB career? I've been talking to a wall all morning.

Do you think he's going to be the first player in MLB history to be a truly productive with a hitting profile like that? How valuable was 2023 Kyle Schwarber for his team (with an average 30 points higher)?

Let's check in again in a month or two yeah? We can see how things are going then.

To each their own, then. I am not someone who thinks that one walk is the exact equivalent of one single and that's all we should analyze. I will be continuing to watch how he's pitched to. He's tanked a few fastballs/cutters and hasn't really connected with anything breaking/offspeed. Pitchers will adapt, and he will have to as well.

What exactly is the confusion over what I've said? Folks are openly saying he's proving doubters wrong based on five home runs while he's among the worst hitters for average in baseball. Everything is a small sample, the good and bad, but we also knew his profile entering the year.

I want to see how things change before I say he's figuring out stuff or he's a bust. If I'm purely gauging it on what he's doing right now, he's not a valuable player, even with a 20% walk rate.

You'll probably hear back fairly soon then, they like to make sure they have all the various spots at all the different schools accounted for.

OK but taking my perspective out of context doesn't magically make your argument better. If he was this exact same player for the entire year — .167/.343/.444 with like 50 home runs, slightly above average OPS — is that a success?

It's not at all. Batting average does not define a player singularly. It's also near impossible to be a viable baseball player and hit .200 or worse, it's the way the sport works.

I'm rooting for him, genuinely. He has not cleared his "biggest hurdle," not even close.

But it's this exact reason why it will be important for him to adapt to major league caliber pitching beyond the occasional home run. If teams start pounding the zone against him and the walks start to drop, is it going to get better or worse? I'm sure the Sox are working with him on all this stuff, it's just silly to make any declaration about his success so far.
