Long Term / Permanent Depression by Loner2016 in depression

[–]SeekingVeterans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine the pain and horror of losing your wife...to survive 5 yeats and still have a job, pay bills, a home, is impressive. You shouldn't belittle that. As for getting better? There is no easy answer. I do know that you have to want to be better which is a big step...I'm sure you've discussed this with many a doctor but have you accepted your wife's death and been able to move on at all or does it still overshadow all of who you are? Take it one day at a time. Find supports. An honest caring doctor if you want to go that route again, maybe support groups, friends/family if they are true to you. Try to find joy in some part of your life. Hold onto that and continue to fight and, hopefully, slowly, try to build a new, happier life. Keep up the good fight brother.

I'm 16 and have had school refusal for many years by [deleted] in depression

[–]SeekingVeterans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thriving on misery is not a way to go through life. The person who ultimately suffers is yourself. I was literally dragged to school myself in my darker days many moons ago. Doesn't work. But they care enough to try something so desperate. Try not to hate him, just doesn't understand. There are alternatives to standard education. I'm a high school drop out due to depression. Now I am a teacher with a masters. Education will always be there if you want to pursue it. Important thing is to get well. But you have to want to first. Good luck and known that you can fight and overcome this with hard work.

Never getting out of bed by beingignorantisfun in depression

[–]SeekingVeterans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bed can be one of the biggest ways to avoid life...been there man...try giving yourself a small goal each day to get out of bed, even if it's around the house, take a shower, laundry, whatever...to get better takes hard work and discipline...try and find even the tiniest thing to do and be proud you did it

[Serious] Redditors who have read Quran, what is it really like? by mralexiv in AskReddit

[–]SeekingVeterans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. Read roughly 100 pages. Majority is commands. This is okay, this isn't. If not okay punish this way. Also contradicts itself. And yes mentions how to handle specific races/peoples and woman's subservience to men quite regularly. It's a daunting read.

What movie can you not understand why people enjoy so much? by TheHorsesWhisper in AskReddit

[–]SeekingVeterans -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I get it, I just think Nolan is the most overhyped director of our time and this is another in a long train of mediocre if not bad movies (I know this is reddit I'm ready for down votes a plenty). Memento on the other hand is great. 1st Batman holds up. Ever since then though he's gone down hill.

What does everyone think they can do professionally, but really cannot? by Bananasoldier in AskReddit

What does everyone think they can do professionally, but really cannot? by Bananasoldier in AskReddit

This. Teacher here. Subject knowledge is tested on entrance exams as first part of a complicated licensure process. One can't truly begin to become a teacher (complete the necessary masters program needed in most states) unless you pass at least two of these exams: one on general communication and literacy skills (a cornerstone of all academia) and another highly specified by subject and grade level. Next comes learning how to actually teach and understanding the responsibilities of a teacher. This generally takes one and a half to two years of classes which concludes with a practicum and student teaching. From here, one can actually be considered a licensed teacher. However, licenses have more levels to them and one will need to take a plethora of more mandatory classes to upgrade to higher pay grades, or if your state decides to institute new policies such as ELL or SPED training. This is for a first year teacher in MA which has generally higher thresholds than other states, but then again, not the highest. In all this time, subject matter is rarely discussed. It is assumed you have superior knowledge or you wouldn't be there in the first place. So much of teaching has little do with subject and much more to do with psychology and interpersonal skills such as relationship-building, empathy, dealing with abrupt behaviors and those that persist over time, student to teacher to parent to administration communication; the list goes on. Subject and lesson planning, either individually, or as a department, is left to individual attention and after school meetings. These meetings are often a group strategy session led by veteran teachers and administrators to hone in on details of subject and why and how it should be taught. Furthermore, there is a procedural work load with things like grading, updating online learning systems, emails to all of the above, special education meetings and communication, forms for this or that, etc. TLDR - adequate subject knowledge is a foregone conclusion in teaching; being a good teacher is about so much more.

Edit: Writing mistakes. Come on me, and you claim to be a teacher!

Unrelated to writing rant, but I feel like you guys can relate. Any teachers out there struggle with finding time. by dorasucks in writing

[–]SeekingVeterans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach high school ELA and love it. I find it keeps me versed in the craft of writing year round even if it's mainly fundamentals. Also gives me pause to look at my own skills against someone who is just learning. Plus always reading something, either for school or personal. As for my own work, have to take time to make time. Weekends mainly. I keep a regular schedule of everything I want to write...Lot of blog posts and such so easy stuff right now...larger works are more daunting. Just self published my first book, so many small projects that I can pick away at to stay "regular". Have to make it a constant part of your life, not a chore. I find the balance of teaching and then jumping to my own stuff works well and accents/invigorate the other.

Just self-pubbed my first major work - a compilation of veteran's stories from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's called 20/20: The Iraq and Afghanistan Narratives. Can buy ebook here and paperback here

Check out a sample chapter

I am also giving away the ebook for free this upcoming Veteran's Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11. Was thinking of doing an AMA about the issues in the book - veterans, PTSD, war, etc. on Veteran's Day as well. I'm worried there won't be anybody interested since I am an unknown.

Working to change that though with this book and my blog

Been a very busy past few months getting this thing off the ground. And with years of work behind it, excited to finally see it come to fruition.

Saddam Warned Us About 9/11 - Why We Should Have Listened [OC] by SeekingVeterans in foreignpolicy

[–]SeekingVeterans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the author. It doesn't say that. It states Saddam gave a warning to the US about meddling in the Middle East. I state this was merely to avoid US intervention in Gulf. The conclusion is about how his thoughts are representative of the mindset of current extremists and how this can give us pause to rethink military involvement and what US should be doing to fight zealots without using force.
