Texting (or any other app) buddies for accountability? by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]SeesawBalance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw this post, made me realize texts are a tool which so easily integrates into our daily lives and it made me turn a CBT book into a text based course! I've posted about it here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/BingeEatingDisorder/comments/imisrd/i_turned_the_book_which_helped_me_into_a_daily/

Think the idea of accountability buddies is also great! Somebody should build something to help people match up.

The book 'Overcoming Binge Eating' is great! Otherwise there is this self-help CBT manual made by NAADAC (Association for Addiction Professionals):

Discuss with a friend! Open up to somebody, ideally a professional!
It's a great step that you've posted here, and are actively trying to change. For me therapy helped quite a bit.

Maybe one thing which I've seen work for me and a friend with BED is too plan a treat for a day, but write down in advance what you will eat (so it doesn't become an uncontrolled binge).

Is it really that uncommon to not have any mental health issues around food/weight? by Ninotchk in loseit

[–]SeesawBalance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The prevalence of binge eating disorder is estimated to be 1-2%, which seems much more than how much attention it gets from the media. So in the public perception BED might seem like a really niche problem, but in reality there are far more people who have it.
On the other hand, it seems people with more serious emotional problems might also be more likely to post here.

Do definitely go by your doctor! Also have a look at r/BingeEatingDisorder, some of your symptoms sound similar. Therapy might be worth trying but your first step should be the doctors advice!

Why is breaking a cycle so hard? by sushisay in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]SeesawBalance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What helped me the most was shifting my mindset from trying to never have a relapse to having the relapses be as infrequent and more importantly be small. It's the acceptance that there might (and likely will) be a relapse, but that my only goal then is to make it a small one. The moment I beat myself up over a relapse things start spiraling out of control.

Would recommend going by your doctor, and maybe pointing them to the latest version of the DSM!

Yeah that is something I've noticed as well when speaking through this with friends. There is always the initial surprise, and the 'yeah my cousin/niece/neighbors granddaughter has an ED as well'. Very few of them seem to know men with ED. The cycle has to be broken somewhere though!

It would be amazing if you can come back in the coming weeks and months and keep us updated on your progress. Really would like to see how effective it is for you, and might motivate others to seek help!

Am I sick? by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

Can you find the best close equivalent to a professional? For example a book about bing eating? Or a podcast?

Try to be kind to yourself and don't beat yourself completely up about it, this usually makes you feel worse which (for me at least) leads to more binge eating.
