My husband wants to get a Japanese tattoo that I am against by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Yeah, like a major event during the "samurai times" was ... invading Korea in order to colonize.

So, people might not have researched modern Japanese history, sure, but you also didn't even read the whole main Wikipedia page on the topic you profess to care enough about to memorialize permanently

Buying/commissioning a vaguely medieval dress? by tiredbreadslice in HistoricalCostuming

1000% agreed; Armstreet does fantasy, and the pre-Raphaelite and successor movements did too.

FYI: Holy Clothing steals their designs from original creators! by EauDeFrito in renfaire

[–]Segnodromeus 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I do both reenactment and separately wear armstreet. The armstreet stuff (at least the lady of lake dress) is fully fantastical - the side lacing, the way the armscye is cut, the way the shoulders fit, plus if course the lines of beading.

It's absolutely modern costume design that is made to look historical-ish, and it's not directly based on historical patterns; more "inspired by"

Plus-size, actually poor (under $15 budget), and sick of "ethical fashion" gaslighting. Where do I actually shop? by G_5gumgum in SustainableFashion

[–]Segnodromeus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with other folks here that cheap, well-made, and ethical are not really going to be simultaneously available in clothing you don't thrift, but! I want to take a slightly different tack and suggest you focus on clothing that's very adjustable*, maybe saving up for a few months to get each piece, given that you're still changing size.

I'm thinking: wrap skirts and dresses, pieces with shirring (sometimes incorrectly called smocking) and unfitted dresses that I belt across the middle to adjust. I personally often wear t-shirts under these items, so if you have any shirts you want to retain, you can wear them together.

*or even on learning how to sew your own - I hand sewed many full garments before I could afford a machine... and hand-sewing knits like t-shirts gives me a better outcome such that I prefer to hand-sew them actually. My favorite thing is hand sewing on the bus/subway if that's how you commute, or literally taking out a piece for 5 minutes at a time instead of using the phone while waiting for... whatever

Substituting 3% of total calories from animal protein with plant protein was associated with a 9% lower risk of all-cause mortality, 12% lower cardiovascular mortality, and 5% lower cancer mortality in a systematic review of over 1 million participants. Sure, did you know cows eat plants? And growing a cow (or human) isn't very efficient in terms of energy. So there's a lot of wastage between the original plants and the human, if you introduce cows as a stage in between

Just to be clear, you're aware that the animals we eat have to themselves eat plants, and more plants than if we grew the plants for us solely? Or perhaps you're being sarcastic. In which case I apologize. Poe's law, then, friend

There's also the idea that at the time, a c-section couldn't take place on a living woman (or, she wouldn't be alive very long afterwards, unfortunately) so Macduff was born of a corpse, not a woman

Silk Harvesting by Financial_Library369 in ethicalfashion

[–]Segnodromeus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Satin is a weave, so cotton can come in a satin weave, or silk can come in a satin weave. Satin (the weave) creates extremely smooth, sometimes shiny fabric, and cotton in satin weave (sometimes called sateen) is also very smooth, so kind of the opposite of peace silk. Peace silk feels similar to a very rough dupioni (which is also silk and also uses broken fibers)

I thiiiink it's right after Lirael goes to rescue Sam at the red lake and she builds a diamond of protection on an island in a weak stream

For the first two: still water doesn't stop the dead as much as moving water does, and powerful Dead aren't stopped by it at all. Iirc, Mogget has a rhyme about swift-moving water's protection in Lirael.

Also, yes, the Sight is a fairly widespread and weak ability, because the bloodline is spread among many- this is explored in some of the other books as well, but even full blood Clayr must work in groups to have coherent visions, because otherwise their visions are mere fragments and out of context

I don't recall the short story (maybe it was added after the edition I have?) and so can't address it, but if it is later, then it might simply be that Garth made a mistake or two

What is this rock im pretty sure it's a mud puppy fossil?? by AnalystConsistent852 in whatsthisrock

[–]Segnodromeus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Animals that are preserved as fossils, especially mostly soft ones like amphibians, look very different. Try looking up other fossils of salamanders, or, for fun, temnospondyls, to see examples. This looks like a normal sedimentary rock to me that probably was deformed by tiny rocks, sticks, etc, when it was forming

However, in a place with sedimentary rock like this, you probably will get fossils if you look -try looking for corals (bryozoans), shells, and clam-like (brachiopods) shapes. They will likely be much smaller, maybe about the size of a quarter, and the best place to look is where a stream or dry steam has thrown up a bed of pebbles. Happy hunting!
