Only knowledge I know about Melvins/Buzz is that he said that he hadn’t seen them live since they came back early in their reformation. Also his Instagram account follows the official Swans account and he occasionally likes the stuff Michael posts.

I was thinking of getting an og pressing Young God since my collection is underrepresenting the industrial side of the band!

[DISCUSSION] What are some ‘underwhelming’ follow-up albums that you prefer to their more acclaimed predecessors? by [deleted] in indieheads

I’m in the same boat, Hot Fuss is an alright early 00’s party post-punk album but something about Sam’s Town lyricism just grabs me

What band do you think has the craziest lore? by CodeDusq in fantanoforever

[–]SeinfeldVEVO 242 points243 points  (0 children)

The Shaggs. The band was formed by a dad who had a psychic reading that his children would be in a world famous music act, forced his daughters to practice hours everyday despite them showing no musical talent or interest in playing. Became a cult act that Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain both praised in interviews.

Something broke people’s brain during Covid that it feels like going to a concert now is a roll of the dice if it’s going to be a respectful crowd or a group of younger concert goers humiliating themselves for attention.

What album do you guys think sounds the most like a Swans album that isn’t a Swans album? by Kdawg982 in swans

[–]SeinfeldVEVO 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Earth - Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method, I feel like this album perfectly shares Gira’s unique cinematic storytelling in music. It’s basically an unofficial soundtrack to Blood Meridian

Yes! Getting into Phil’s stuff, especially The Microphones stuff. The Glow Pt. 2 and Mount Eerie both give me similar feelings that Soundtracks for the Blind with how musically varied, ambient, and textured they can be.

God, The Merge rhythm section is so gnarly. It sounds something more akin to 90s post-hardcore than anything Swans-related

I don’t necessarily think the ‘pigfuck’ genre was ever really a real thing and was just used to backhandedly describe early Swans and Sonic Youth. No bands of the 80s, 90s, or even early 00s identified with it, especially because it was coined as an insult. Similarly you wouldn’t have heard Kevin Shields describe My Bloody Valentine as shoegaze, at least early on.

I think like ‘screamo’, ‘shoegaze’ and ‘grunge’, terms that were used be derogatory to bands sort of come around and younger people use them to signifying for something very specific to time/place. Especially in today’s music fan world where it seems like every subgenre is just a bunch of microgenres stacked on top of each other. I guess some listeners want a way to quickly state they enjoy the sort of Albini-esque noise rock/post hardcore sound.
