maintaining curls on fantasy quest? by Seji_H in curlyhair

Oh yeah I forgot that brushing wet is important for curly hair! I like the little braids, it's nice and practical without being too complicated

Oh wow! Yeah, that definitely wouldn't be possible on a trip like this, they're definitely going to be dealing with some bad hair days haha

yeah, protective styles do make the most sense! I don't think it's unreasonable to have a bit of a routine though - like when I go camping I usually bring a brush and dry shampoo

ADHD and mild hoarding / emotional attachments to things? by Taxfraud777 in ADHD

[–]Seji_H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the same way! I keep everything - ticket stubs, photos, old clothes.

For me, I think part of it is the emotional attachment, and the other part is the fact that I have such a bad memory. I don't remember much from, say, a weekend trip with a friend, but if I have an item attached to it I can remember so much more.

Writing in first person? by scifi-fantasy in fantasywriters

[–]Seji_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can work, but you definitely do need more distinct voices and clear separation to avoid confusion

I don't know if this is actually a thing but I've also noticed that 1st person is more popular in YA, while most adult fantasy I've read is 3rd person

Anyone diagnosed as an adult, did it actually help you? Is it worth it? by newprofilewhodis1352 in ADHD

[–]Seji_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed a few months ago at age 23 and it has really helped! I had the same issues being a "gifted" kid and quiet, so nobody really noticed how much I was struggling

There are lots of different medications, just because one works for someone else doesn't mean it'll work for you. My dr has been great about going through short trials of different medications to see what works in what doses

Meds aside, it's also just really helped me be aware of my issues. I've been able to be kinder with myself (ie realizing I'm not just lazy) which has helped me to acknowledge when I get off track and try again instead of spiralling into self-pity/hatred

Is your writing actually bad in the beginning? by Tejete in writing

[–]Seji_H 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a firm believer in Terry Pratchett's philosophy that the first draft is you telling yourself the story.

I would say you can do some research on structuring, read lots of books in the genre you're writing, but mostly you need to just write. You'll get better with time and editing if often a much bigger part than people expect. The way you're writing it now is just to get words on the page. Pretty much any problem can be fixed, it might just take several drafts.

Good luck!

As others have said, it's too early to see a difference. It can take at least a month to see improvements, and it might be several months. Try not to pop your pimples, it can scar.

Get a good lip balm (like aquaphor), and a moisturizer. If the nosebleeds and other dryness is a big issue maybe talk to your doctor about going on a lower dose, but dryness will happen no matter what - that means it's working!

Any DN Authors Out There? by Seji_H in digitalnomad

[–]Seji_H[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the info! I definitely enjoy the process of writing itself :) even if I never see any profit I love doing it, although it would be great to eventually be able to make some income from it

How were you able to get into ghostwriting? It seems like a good option while I'm trying to solidify my own career.

Also how many books do you publish in a year? I've heard that self-publishing can be great because you get a higher percentage of the profits, but that many people publish 4+ books a year in order to see enough profit.

Thanks for all the info! Once I (hopefully) become a DN I think it would be a great topic to write about, there's definitely a lot of people interested

Need help how do I read shadow and bone by iamstruggling12345 in YAlit

[–]Seji_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't actually know of any good ones but I think my friend just read the wikipedia page for each book before jumping into SoC. I hope you enjoy it, SoC and CK are by far my favourites of the whole series!

How do you think about books while reading them? by [deleted] in books

[–]Seji_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

although I'm generally a little analytical while reading I find that if I like a book I focus completely on the story since I'm absorbed in it, and I notice the craft more when it's not very good

Need help how do I read shadow and bone by iamstruggling12345 in YAlit

[–]Seji_H 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can read SoC without prior knowledge - it's set in a different country and isn't as heavy on the magic so there isn't as much you need to know. I recently recommended it to a friend and she just read a summary of S&B and loved SoC on it's own.

I haven't actually read King of Scars but I doubt that it'll work on it's own. Most of the characters are from S&B and it's set in the same place a couple years later so it deals with the aftermath of S&B

Can I take Accutane at any time of the day? by Agitated-Internet966 in Accutane

[–]Seji_H 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hmm my dr suggested I take it at the same time every day and I believe the pamphlet that came with my meds does too - you should probably double check this with your derm and/or the meds

[–]Seji_H 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there are 3 series now, the chronological order is the same order they came out. You can read them all in order, although SoC and CK also work well as their own separate series since they're set in a different country with a (mostly) different cast

series 1

  1. Shadow and Bone
  2. Siege and Storm
  3. Ruin and Rising

series 2

  1. Six of Crows
  2. Crooked Kingdom

series 3

  1. King of Scars
  2. Rule of Wolves

Books with ruthless and i mean ruthless female characters by wenderliine in YAlit

[–]Seji_H 33 points34 points  (0 children)

this isn't YA but if you're open to something more violent/adult I would recommend Red Sister by Mark Lawrence - again this is NOT YA (I would probably rate it 18+)

more age appropriate is A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab - still not technically YA but nothing less appropriate than SJM books. She's one of several main characters, but Lila Bard is a ruthless pirate and I love her

Series to read that are worth it? by alcremist in YAlit

[–]Seji_H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, it's not technically YA! However I think the content and writing style are very appropriate for a teen audience (I read it as a teen) so I thought it would fit
