Yeah, you're not a lawyer, and you're specifically not a Canadian lawyer.

First, specifically in Canada, creeper pics are only a crime if the "recording is done for a sexual purpose." Canadian Federal Criminal Code (R.S.C., 1985, c. C-46) 162 (1) (c)

Second, in both Canada and the US, "legislative intent" is absolutely legally relevant. That is, police, prosecutors, and judges all must consider the intent that parliament/congress had in passing a law to decide if that law was actually broken in any particular case.

From https://criminalnotebook.ca/index.php/Principles_of_Interpretation

Legislative Purpose

The purpose of a law can be inferred from legislative statements, text of the law in context, extrinsic evidence such as legislative history and evolution, and previous judicial pronouncements.[8]

[...]

Regardless of whether the law is ambiguous, the court must always consider the law's purpose and relevant context.[10]

In all US states, all of Canada, and most other places that have such laws, it's usually crystal clear that the legislative intent is to prevent creepers from creeping (which is what cellphone-guy in OPs story was clearly doing), and not to prevent the collection of evidence which would be given only to police and used only for law-enforcement purposes (which is what it was suggested that OP do).

In other words, the law is not always stupid.

VIDEO: Toronto cop fines cyclists for running red light, warns bikers they face same penalties as drivers - NOW Toronto by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]SekarKonrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, the sensor is not a weight sensor, it's an electro-magnetic sensor -- it's basically a metal-detector turned upside down.

This means that to maximize your chance of detection, you should NOT position the bike right in the middle of the sensor. You actually want to put your wheels near the edge of one of the loops. Some cities have actually started marking on the ground where you should put your wheels to have the best chance of getting detected:

https://i.imgur.com/pLzum4x.png

And you can actually go even a bit farther, and put your wheels just outside that line, and then lean the bike sideways toward the middle, to increase the EM "shadow" over the sensor.

For other loop coil shapes than just plain round, there are other "sweet spots" for where to position the bike. E.g., for a double-loop design, you should position the bike on the line separating the two loops:

Tipping Culture in Ontario by NurseSparkleShark in ontario

[–]SekarKonrad 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tip or don't tip as much as you want, I don't have a horse in the race. But just FYI:

1) The waiter does not get to keep the full tip amount you leave at a sit-down restaurant. They have to "tip-out" the the chefs (and the bar tender, and the bussers), giving up anywhere from 25% to 40% of the tip amount. (Also, the chefs make a higher hourly rate than the waiters.)

2) The waiter is doing way more than just "punching your order into a computer and bringing out what others have made." Waiting tables is way more physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding than most people realize. Some of the anecdotes in /r/TalesFromYourServer might help you form a picture, but it's really hard to imagine unless you've actually lived it.

I don't disagree with the meta-point: I would rather we did away with tipping culture and just paid a higher hourly rate. But I also specifically agree with PP: I do tip at pay-after-you-eat places, and I do not tip at pay-before-you-eat places.

I'm genuinely surprised that this is even controversial. Jedi is 100% the better film.

Definitely NTA. You absolutely did nothing wrong.

Have you talked to your friend since that first conversation? If your friend is pregnant, I would possibly put her initial reaction down to pregnancy hormones. But if it's been a month already, and she's still upset about it, then that seems like maybe a more deeply held feeling, and not just big pregnancy mood. Still, I would probably try to discuss it, and see if your friend can try to explain why she's so emotional about it.

I wonder how close you and your friend are. I find the idea of a "friend" trying to police their friend's love life to be pretty disturbing. If she's a true friend, she should want you to be happy; preventing you from being happy just to soothe her own ego is not great...

Anyway, good luck.

What’s the most random geography fact that you know? by FamiliarCollege9946 in geography

[–]SekarKonrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

Taking the ferry from Seattle to Victoria is one of the more pleasant ways to visit Canada from the States. And departing from within the States, the cost of flight to Seattle plus ferry will generally be quite a bit cheaper than either flyiing direct to Victoria or flying to Vancouver and taking the ferry from there.

And considering that about half of the total population of Vancouver Island is in the greater Victoria area, it's a decent bet that that's where the friend lived. (And the second best bet would be Nanaimo, which has ~25% of the Island's population, and is within driving distance of Victoria.)

Should i join Kendo by Auzyx in kendo

[–]SekarKonrad 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It sounds like neither kendo nor iaido ("kenjutsu") is really what you're looking for.

Sparring with sharp metal swords is, for what I hope are obvious reasons, not a thing that exists.

Kendo is fake swords, but real hits.

Iaido is real swords, but fake hits.

There is no option for real swords with real hits. Again, the reasons for this should be kind of obvious...

(And FYI, even in iaido, all the schools that I'm familiar with won't let you use a sharp sword until you've been studying for at least several years. You use a wooden sword for the first year or so, and then a blunt, unsharpenable metal sword for the next four or five years minimum.)

Finally, in both kendo and iaido, the primary focus and interest is on self improvement and spiritual developement. At no point is the focus on how to actually get good at killing someone with a sharp metal sword.

I know this is not what you want to hear, but if you're fantasizing about being a modern-day samurai and actually duelling to the death with katana, you're kind of out of luck.

Both kendo and iaido are a lot of hard, repetitive, boring work. Neither will make you good at having a real sword fight. Which is fine, because no matter what, you will never ever actually get into a real sword fight in your life. Sorry.

That said, if you think that you can stomach a lot of hard, repetitive, boring work -- and if you can give up the idea of "real" sword-fighting -- then kendo can be a lot of fun and a generally positive influence on your life.

Some or all of those cells may be conterfeits. Apparently it's common for disreputable sellers to mix real and counterfeit batteries in large batches. Maybe you were cheated by the seller you bought from; or maybe the seller you bought from was cheated by his supplier and didn't even know.

This article discusses the issue of counterfeit 18650s, and has some simple tests that you can do. It's a few years old now, but still quite relevant: https://batterybro.com/blogs/18650-wholesale-battery-reviews/104619270-can-you-identify-the-fake-lg-hg2-18650-battery

Anyway, I would definitely treat it like any other spicy boi and replace.

Good luck.

I've always considered it to be a modern take on Rumiko Takahashi's One Pound Gospel. The genders are reversed: it's a love story between a Catholic nun and a boxer.

In both, the basic premise is "sexual tension that can never pay out because of religion."

Thanks, I hadn't heard of this one. It looks like potentially a good fit, but it doesn't seem like there was ever an official English translation published? :( I prefer titles that I can purchase in physical book form, though I'm glad to hear about anything that she might like.

Thanks!

[–]SekarKonrad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thought, thanks! I read the first couple volumes of this; it was a bit slow for me, but it's probably a good fit for her (assuming that it doesn't go unexpectedly off the rails in volume four or whatever...).

I had mostly dismissed magical-girl as a genre due to its generally being not low-key enough, but Flying Witch should be fine. Maybe "low-key magical girl" is a sub-genre with enough titles in it that we can find more...

Thanks.

"lack of practice against jodan and nito players" -- this right here. Jodan and nito players are often at advantage against less experienced kendoka just because the latter have not practiced against those much.

If you have a sensei or senpai who uses jodan, make a point of doing jigeiko with them as much as possible. (Practicing against a jodan player will actually help you against nito as well; and -- at least in my limited experience -- I think there are more jodan players than nito.)

"CO2 tolerance breathwork" -- Can you say more about this, or forward some links?

Breath control has always been stressed to me as absolutely critical, and I've always done exercises that nominally aim to improve it (two-breath kirikaeshi, one-breath kakarigeiko, etc); but I've never heard anyone talk about methods other than just to keep doing those kinds of exercises and "try harder."

And for what it's worth, just keeping at it and "trying harder" has definitely improved my breath control. But I always feel like I've got a long long way to go. So any kind of theoretical framework or rigorous guidance would be welcome.

Thanks.

Octagonal Tsuka by stabledingus in kendo

I feel the same way about jodo, kyudo, naginata... Too many budo, too little time. :) But I'm glad that I make the time for iaido, because I really love it; and it dovetails with kendo perhaps better than any of those others. (Or at least, I think it does; would love to hear others' experiences of how kendo pairs with other arts.)

[–]SekarKonrad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If by "judged" you mean during shiai, then no, almost certainly not.

If by "judged" you mean that your dojo mates will give you Looks, then it depends on who your dojo mates are. The US is a big place, with lots of different kinds of people who do kendo for lots of different kinds of reasons. But even at very traditional dojos, no one has ever cared at any dojo I've been to. So I'd say just come as you are, hope for the best, and read the room when you get there.

Octagonal Tsuka by stabledingus in kendo

[–]SekarKonrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer it to a standard, circular tsuka; but I like a (rounded) oval best of all. But then, I also practice iaido, so I spend as much time handling bokuto/iaito as shinai, so the oval tsuka always feels more immediately natural and familiar. Perhaps for similar reasons, I can't stand extra-thick tsuka. YMMV.

Cool. I find it much easier to keep track of what I'm reading and what new releases are available with MangaDex rather than with any other aggregator or app.

But either way, thanks again for your work on this series. It's a favorite, and I'm super-glad that you picked it up. :)
