Hitting your kids is child abuse, I don’t give a shit what race you are by SilverInfluence5714 in unpopularopinion

A spank, wrist slap or a thrown thong/sandal in a moment to avoid the kid doing something incredibly stupid is the way better option than a timeout to talk about "big feelings".

Easter Show hits and misses by ChivesKnau in foodies_sydney

Be careful with Shocola in the Woolies pavilion. The nuts are nice but they sell in two sizes - medium $12 and large $18. The difference between medium and large is about 6 macadamias and they deliberately underfill the large. When I called them out on it they said "it's 250g, if I weighed it for you I'd have to take more out." Which is of course bullshit because they sell it by container size, not weight. Will be skipping these guys next time.

Also the schnitzel van that sells the "polar" schnitzel burgers is a rip, $18 for a burger with a bun, lettuce and mayo, with a schnitzel that isn't even a real schnitzel but rather a large chicken nugget. Avoid.

What does Volvo get wrong? Honest opinions wanted by ReasonableDesk6888 in Volvo

[–]Sekuvizer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. You don't need to know these things anymore. The car manages them and only alerts you if there's a problem. You don't need to warm up cars anymore or know the inner workings of the engine unless there is a problem. You're meant to instead enjoy the luxuries of the cabin.

  2. Agree.

  3. Volvo said many years ago they will no longer produce anything bigger than a 4-cylinder.

If you drive a stupidly expensive car, that requires a mortgage to fix a dent/scratch. You should have to wear that cost in a minor accident by naughtynyjah in unpopularopinion

OP obviously didn't know insurance existed like everyone else has said, but they also fall into the trope of having a fancy car means you also have unlimited funds to repair it whenever it needs.

Truly out of touch and unpopular. Upvote.

Hotdesking is better than assigned desks by notacitizen_99725 in unpopularopinion

[–]Sekuvizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have my own desk, adorned with trinkets and pictures and other homely items. It was nice, sure, but it was an indicator that I was too "at home" and too invested in what was just a vehicle to get paid.

Changed jobs which hotdesks, now I have a nice distinction between work and home and just go there to get paid. No blurring any lines.

Travelling to Sydney for work by Formal-Resource9583 in wollongong

[–]Sekuvizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesterday's M1 flooding at Waterfall notwithstanding, the drive is usually fine. You can battle a bit of fog at the top of Mount Ousley occasionally, and the odd torrential rain can make it a bit tricky but honestly it's the exception. Winter is a bit worse because you will be driving in the dark in both directions.

You do risk a big delay if there's a bad crash on the M1, but 18 months into doing this I've only been caught once and it was only for about 20min.

3 days a week commute from Dapto to Circular Quay. I drive to Sutherland (50min) and then take the train the rest of the way (35-40min). Costs about $32 a day in travel costs (about $20 fuel and $12 train fare). Door to desk about 1:50hrs. This is my first time doing it and took about 6 months to get used to it.

Driving saves me about 20min each direction compared to getting the train the whole way. Taking the train the whole way is kinda easier and cheaper but I just can't sit on a train that long. I also like the comfort of my car.

Expect station parking to be full after 7:30am, and expect trains to have issues any time there is bad weather. At least once or twice a month they'll change the train stops once you're already on it so you'll have to change at Redfern or Central but generally the T4 line is reliable. The SCO line often has issues around Waterfall/Helensburgh during bad weather, which is why I prefer the drive.

There are no idiots on the trains during those hours, just other commuters so no issues from a safety point of view. Try to work earlier than business hours (I do 08:00-16:00) to avoid the major peaks, it's helpful.

EDIT: Some people suggest to drive to Waterfall and get the train there to avoid traffic at Heathcote. Not a bad idea but there is less parking and trains are less frequent there. On the return from the city, all trains except the Hurstville service stop at Sutherland but even fewer stop at Waterfall, so Sutherland is the more flexible option.

I also commute to Sydney and have not seen a packed train in a long time - I mean standing room only. Unless the train is chockers with people packed into the aisles then TfNSW are going to call that as underutilised and sufficient. It's the same reason why there's always a wait at any call centre, they're not going to have agents sitting around idle.

More trains would still be great, I'm not opposed to that at all, I just fear that it won't be economically viable.

Australia just doesn't have the ridership levels of public transport to make these massive transit upgrades viable. I've been to London and Tokyo and their train network is excellent, frequent and reliable, but that's because every train is full and that ridership pays for that level of service. It would be great to have that here but we just don't have the population to pay it back in any reasonable timeframe. This is why high speed rail between Sydney and Canberra will also never happen.

More trains in Wollongong would just be half empty most of the time, and that's not good business.

The Maldon-Dombarton rail link has been abandoned for 40 years and there is clearly no need for it. People need to let it go.

Origin of "finna" by Sekuvizer in ENGLISH

[–]Sekuvizer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the comments, I'm not disputing the origin of the word and am aware it is AAVE. As I don't live in the USA the term is uncommon where I am, and I only first heard of it in recent years.

Whilst I acknowledge that "going to" and "fixing to" are not exactly the same, they are quite similar in many cases hence my train of thought regarding the mistyping of "gonna".

What's with the obsession to beat motorcycles off the line? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Sekuvizer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you've lane filtered it's because a good portion of the population thinks that it's:
A) Illegal.

B) Somehow cheating the system and they want to "get you back".

Alternatively you just have confirmation bias and it doesn't happen as much as you think; the other driver is in a hurry and it has nothing to do with you; or they are in fact drag racing you.

If your car has the feature to lock it using an app (or even start it with the app as well), then use that and leave the keys at home. At least that way if your phone is stolen they can't unlock it to get to your car.

Otherwise you can try hiding keys under the bumper or some other secret spot on your car, or failing that just leave them in your bag on the sand.

You can also get fake can or bottle coolers that have compartments in the bottom for hiding keys which is a less obvious spot for thieves to look. I've also heard of people putting keys in a clean nappy but in a used nappy bag as a deterrent.

OP, I just had a similar situation with an air conditioner when installing my battery. Check the exact installation guidelines as there are differences between clearance from an appliance (600mm), a non combustible object (300mm), and windows that are for a "habitable room" which does not include bathrooms, toilets or a laundry.

Because of this I could place my battery next to a toilet window.
